The New Front Runner for LA Mayor

Councilman Paul Krekorian is off to a flying start in his first full day in office.  As reported by OurLA the Second District Councilman proved that he meant what he said during his campaign and introduced legislation with teeth to limit the controversial state law, SB1818, which seeks to tie the hands of local cities when it comes to development.

That being said Krekorian makes it clear he is serious and intends to deliver for the people who elected him.  Along with some recent excellent hires for his Council staff it will quickly further endear the charasmatic politician to the City of Los Angeles.  We don't know if Paul Krekorian intends to run for Mayor of Los Angeles but with crop of current and former Council Members who plan to run and are generally ridiculed by their constituents - not to mention the crop of gadflies and unknown corporate types who might jump in the race - Krekorian presents a qualified and attractive alternative not only to anything we've already had but to what we could have.

If he keeps it up these next two years, if he wants to be Mayor, he has it.

I'm just sayin. By getting elected to the Council Krekorian (or anyone) is automatically considered a possibility and since the current possibilities stink and if Krekorian delivers what he promised it puts him in the catbird seat.

Sorry Frank, Paul will not be hiring you.

Paul is great but he should stick to his council district.

He can better lead by example from there rather than by running for mayor.

Any way you look at it he is the best thing we have going for us at City Hall.

I think Michael makes a good point. By being the only real newcomer to the city council, Krekorian is the only one whose record isn't severely tainted.

But I would like to see, for a change, a city councilman who really makes landmark improvments for their district over the course of several terms and, lord help us, serve as an example of how to do it right.

If anyone does that, the mayor's job is theirs for the taking, even though we need help at the top now.

Not hiring Phil or Frank automatically makes Paul the smartest guy in city hall.

Hooray for CD2, we have a Representative and we are off to a great start. SB 1818 affects the entire city. Reining it in will benefit all of our communities! We also need to put the squeeze on
ADU's so the city doesn't let them get out of control either. Why is it they always go several steps further than what the law requires?
Hmmm, perhaps because they make deals with the devils, I mean developers, who help fund their campaigns? How about the Medical Marijuana ordinance? Over five meetings and still nothing! We need to know what gives here!

I guess it's true what they say -- that politics has become the true "religion" of most of America, and its leaders now have to be promoted as messiahs and martyrs in order to get and stay elected.

Come on, I support Paul over Essel, partly because I've had enough of the false meme that the outsider to politics is going to be better - being inexperienced with a huge learning curve, running on plans and schemes instead of a track record, makes you even MORE the puppet of whoever recruited you and raised the money for you. AS WE CAN SEE.

But person's right who says that just because he proposed legislation opposing AB1818 does not mean much, except that he's making a gesture to the people who elected him. Anyone can introduce anything with just one person to second it, doesn't mean it will get passed, or that they can work the tedious process of working the motion through the committee, crossing the t's and dotting the i's, getting majority support.

AND while I support this motion, I'm fed up with grandstanding ploys to appeal to a demographic they want for their next election.

We'll see a LOT more of that from Janice wanna-be-Lt. Gov Hahn, bad as she's been so far banging her buzzer and shamelessly pandering.

Zine is horrible about that too, and added to that, keeps making up "motions" with his own name on it.

At least Paul didn't call it "the Krekorian anti 1818 motion." keep it real, Higby.

No sense trying to keep up the facade of any of this being based on merit or actual achievments. Let's always select leaders based on their (self-described) POTENTIAL, alone!

Higby's definitely over the top about krekorian, as he was about Trutanuch Carmen the Clown, and it seems his only gripe about him NOW is not that he's acting illegally and abusing his job both ethically and under the charter by threatening to arrest and intimidate everyone who doesn't agree with him - but that he's not following through ENOUGH.

(MAYBE because smarter and cooler heads have advised him he is on shaky legal ground and had better shut up instead of make it worse by actually throwing Perry and Leiwike into the pokey?)

BUT certainly Krekorian is highly qualified and reading the Slimes' endorsement of Essel from just ONE MONTH AGO IS A LAUGH:

"In the end, we continue to believe that Krekorian has an insufficient record of success in Sacramento to warrant a midterm transfer to city government, and that Essel is the candidate most likely to arrive at solutions that work for the city and for 2nd District constituents."

Can we believe ANYTHING the Slimes says?

You have to be kidding. How far do your lips reach up his ass?

Krekorian couldn't raise money for City Council and could only win in a December special election with an overwhelming Armenian turnout in a District where Armenians have more voters than any other district in LA. How does he do that citywide?

Moreover, he would have to open a Mayoral account to raise money immediately after his reelection in 2011--if he wins reelection.

Don't be surprised if he faces a serious challenge and be forced to promise he'll complete his term.

January 08, 2010 11:26 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said:

The reason Mary Benson got a job is simple: It was in exchange for her endorsement in the runoff campaign. She asked Essel for a job and Essel refused because a deal like that is ILLEGAL.

Apparently there is a recorded conversation on Essel's cell phone with Mary demanding a quid pro quo consulting contract in exchange for her endorsement.

Essel won't use it because recording someone without their permission is also illegal.

Mary Benson and Paul Krekorian will deny it but they should submit themselves voluntarily to a lie detector test to really get at the truth. They won't.

January 08, 2010 11:31 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Somebody has got to call you out for being stupid.

Deals like that are made all the time.

Where is the illegality of trading an endorsement for a job?? Are you fucking serious? You are out of your mind. It happens EVERY ELECTION and there is nothing illegal about it.

There may be some Ethics violation if there were money changing hands before, but if you don't know that people who stay loyal during campaigns get rewarded with jobs, then you have no place reading local political blogs, much less writing on them.

Are you thinking that when you're already an office holder, you can't use that public office for anything having to do with the campaign? That is true, but if a candidate wants to offer another candidate a job in exchange for an endorsement, that is perfectly acceptable. Unless the job seeker is polar opposite of the candidate, they'll usually cut a deal.

You people need to hang out at city hall more often. Or go volunteer on campaigns. For real.
