Saturday Open Thread

Oh, what an exciting week this has been! AEG President Tim Leiweke tells the City Council (and the rest of us), who's really calling the shots, CD2 candidate Chris Essel is taken to task for participating in a fund-raiser sponsored by Armenian Holocaust deniers, but most importantly, the critically acclaimed FX series "Sons Of Anarchy" beats Leno in the ratings.

SOA is filmed, for the most part, in Sunland-Tujunga. A match made in heaven, some would say.

Blog away.

Los Angeles: In 1909, it was about water. In 2009, it is about electronic billboards. Now you see why the former head of the L.A. Building Department was accussed and resigned. He refused to issue permits for illegal electronic billboards despite great pressure by Mayor and a certain councilmember. He was warned and then directly threatened with the loss of his job, but still refused to issue illegal permits for electronic billboards. Then, a few days later, he was convienantly accussed of somethimg horrible (which later proved to be unsubstantiated) and promptly removed out of the way so the permits could be issued. Watch the movies Chinatown and L.A. Confidential.

Given Essel's silence on this issue. I think you should refer to her as Essel the Genocide Denier from this point on.

You are right on with the call on the AEG issue. There is no hiding how corrupt the City Council was on Agenda Item 10, 10/23/09. At Jan Perry's insistence they ignored the City Attorney's advice to go into closed session and made comments that helped both billboard industry and AEG from a legal standpoint and put the City at financial risk.

Yes this is personal between Jan Perry and Trutanich, but if it is, and if they didn't trust Trutanich, they should have called on outside Council's advise instead of taking technical legal decision making on their own.

You can see this on the City's website, click on Agenda Item 10 following public comments: http://lacity.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=130&clip_id=6942

I think I am going to watch "Chinatown" tomorrow. Although I saw it years ago, it is more important to me now and I think I'll enjoy it from a different perspective.

I find it very difficult to believe that story about Andrew Adelman. I know... I've heard that there were employees in that department who claim to have had their own "issue" with him, but that story was too much to believe. I feel sorry for him.

The Armenian Genocide (Armenian: Հայոց Ցեղասպանություն, translit.: Hayoc’ C’eġaspanowt’yown; Turkish: Ermeni Soykırımı), also known as the Armenian Holocaust, the Armenian Massacres and, by Armenians, as the Great Calamity was the deliberate and systematic destruction (genocide) of the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire during and just after World War

It's all a bunch of Krekorian propaganda to make Essel look bad to the Armenian community so they'll come out to vote. Sad to see he's at such a low point he feels he needs to do that. How much money has he raised again? Oh right who needs money with friends like Felipe Fuentes,

Essel's huge mistake of course will benefit him by further motivating Armenian voters and will turn off Jewish voters for Essel too.

However Essel's supporters continue radio silence on the Genocide or are going as far to post denial propaganda here on the blog. This material is no different than what the skinheads and Nazis push. The only advantage they have is that most Americans are not as educated on the Armenian Holocaust as that of Nazi Germany against the Jews.

11:14 and 12:41: Yes, isn't it interesting that so soon after Adelman's "resignation" this whole thing comes to a head? I hope the LAPD is doing an internal investigation into who leaked the search warrant to the media in the Adelman case. That is directly linked to the billboard controversy. I know for a fact that more than one person at LAPD is upset with how the whole Adelman thing went down. For one thing, the woman who accused Adelman was caught in more than one lie. I can't disclose when or how, but it happened.

Adleman was set up, no question about it. Mayor leaked the news of the confidential investigation to the media on August 11, just minutes after LAPD said it was cofidential to destroy him. Mayor started the media frenzy which served his end goal. The reason was Adleman's refusal to issue the illegal permits for the USC Galen Center electonic billboard (City Council meeting of early June 2009 and again closed session in early July 2009) and AEG electronic billboards (item 10 of the 10/23/09agenda), both visible from highway 110 in violation of the City and State laws. Then, all of sudden a guy who doesn't have even a traffic ticket is accussed of horrible crimes. 11:14, 12:41, and 4:22 are right on. Things are not what they seem.

4:22 tell us more about the accusser's lies. What is your source? Why didn't LAPD do something about it and still leaked the accussations to the media? Was it to please the Mayor?

Mary Benson left the meeting before her name was called. I like her stance on many issues, but leaving the council meeting early just SCREAMS "I have A-D-D!" Imagine, if you will, Dennis Zine's bald head gathering sweat under the hot lights of the horseshoe; his beady, sell-out, wimpy, voted-against-Nuch-in-re:-to-the-AEG-off-site-billboard-debacle eyes searching the room and calling your name-- to no avail. That looks bad. If you want ANY kind of a political future in this town, that looks REALLY REALLY bad.

AEG took control of the city council meeting on Friday. They were allowed to all speak over their 2 minutes and had 5 lawyers from Latham and Watkins, all the top honchose including Tim, Michael Roth mr. pr, their planning guy and 5 rows of union boys. Jan Perry behaved like a ghetto bitch tough talking. No class at all from any of the clowncil morons. A horrible view of how these bafoons behave during a meeting with all the cameras on them. Reporters were even shocked at the behavior

9:03pm, I cannot disclose my source, but this source was involved in the investigation and is well respected. I do not know who leaked it to the media but someone did and there's always a reason why. Again, I cannot disclose my source, but I also hear that the woman who accused Adelman is a drama queen in general. I also hear she is "taking a lot of heat" for making an untrue accusation that led to Adelman losing his job. Apparently, she is "sorry she ever opened her mouth."

9:09 What other lies did she tell? Did she try to hide her history of heavy drinking and later not remembering where she had been and what she had done? Did she try to hide her leadership role in an anti-sematic group? What were her other lies?

The woman was seen on hotel surveillance video to be leaving his room looking normal, not drunk as she'd claimed. However that doesn't mean the rest didn't happen, however it casts question on whether it was consensual upto a point and then she changed her mind. Adelman had a history of being creepy to women -- but if that were enough to convict, Zine and his cronies would be guilty too. The conspiracy theories about Antonio are ludicrous, though - what does seem likely is that he's so afraid of controversy because he's so unpopular, that he dumped Adelman right away just because he MIGHT embarrass him.

1:29pm, you know more than me for sure. I can only say that one of the lies centered around her professional life. Who she spent time with, and when. There is a timeline of contact here that she did not fully disclose. Another lie was her accusation that she was drugged. Apparently she was well aware that she had not been drugged but rather was more embarrassed by how much she drank and her actions thereafter. She was pretty gone that night and drank a lot more than she admitted. Of course, anyone who read that search warrant could probably come to this conclusion as well, but there was confirmation of this by someone close to the case.

She knew there was no drugs involved and that is why she waited several days to complain or be tested because she knew the tests would be negative. Area survelance cameras showed she was walking around normally, accompnying him willingly and was not drugged. Cab driver said she was normal and did not appear drunk or drugged. My source tells me that she has a history of drinking and later not remembering what she had done. This is a simple case of buyers remorse. Very unfortunate for all invovled.
