DWP General Manager H. David Nahai Tenders Resignation

DWP GM H. David "E. Platus Waterwaster" Nahai Resigns
If only former LA Weekly and City Beat writer Alan Mittelstaedt was available for comments, but in the words of our former blogger Joseph Mailander, Nahai resigns!

Following the old tactic of dumping bad political news on Fridays, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced that embattle DWP General Manager H. David Nahai has tendered his letter of resignation.

Mayor's statement.

I would like to thank David Nahai for his four years of service at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power where he led the team responsible for increasing the City's renewable energy portfolio, reducing water consumption to record levels, and putting us on the path to be coal free by 2020.

I wish him great success in his new endeavor as Senior Advisor to the Clinton Climate Initiative where he will use his experience and leadership skills to advance their core mission of finding and developing workable solutions to climate change....... "nice parachute".

Wow!! and the Mayor selects the wantabee Jim Hightower and former DWP General Manager S. David Freeman to return as a temp GM pending a permanent replacement.

But to most observers of all things political on Spring Street, "it was not if, but when", regarding Nahai's status as the head of the nation's largest public utility.

With water mains bursting city wide, mix in with power outages, soaring rate increases, and most important, IBEW's "Boss D'Arcy's" displeasure, Nahai was "Dead GM Walking" as the backlash against Nahai/Villaraigosa management of the DWP grew city wide.

With Nahai's resignation, he becomes the latest associate of Mayor Villaraigosa to "fall on the sword" to protect the Mayor's waning political capital. Just wondering if Nahai and Villaraigosa will continue their "social gatherings' in LA's restaurants and watering holes??

Your thoughts...........................

I think that Villaraigosa and Nahai will still see each other socially. What's wrong with that?

As a member of the 2004-2005 neighborhood council team that worked to hold the DWP accountable for the services they owe to rate payers, I met many wonderful and conscientious people on the neighborhood council side as well as the DWP management and staff. To quote Ron Kaye: H. David Nahai's "arrogance is even greater than his intelligence." That perfect depiction of Nahai as DWP General Manager (or that other pompous title he wanted to use to impress others) is spot on. I feel that the 4-yr period of Nahai's 2 years on the Board and 2 years as General Manager of DWP may bring some fresh air to this this City.

As someone who has worked on a lot of issues around the City of Los Angeles, I found David Nahai to be easy to work with, a devoted environmentalist and a very fair man.

David is a good man, but if you had Brian D'Arcy in your face every day, David Freeman up your butt, and NIck Patsouras carping at you constantly, you'd quit too.
