It's been real...

Tamar and Tony Are So Cool!

Well, it's official: Tamar Galatzan has qualified to be on the ballot for the Council District 2 race.

Parents within her School Board district aren't really surprised about her decision to run. Los Angeles Times writer Steve Hymon had her number months ago...

from the Bottleneck Blog:

So what does any of this have to do with LAUSD school board member Tamar Galatzan?

Galatzan, who received more than $2 million in campaign help from a Villaraigosa-controlled committee, toppled school board incumbent Jon Lauritzen last year to win a seat on the school board. Shortly after she won election, I phoned her and asked if the rumors were true that she was going to run for Greuel's seat in 2009 if Greuel ran and won city controller?

No, said Galatzan.

I called her again Wednesday and asked the same question. But I got a different answer this time:

"I'm flattered that my name has come up and people have been talking to me about it and it's something I'm considering," said Galatzan, who is now 13 months into her four-year term as a school board member.

I reminded her of our conversation last year. "I don't remember what it was I told you," she said.
[...]

Next, I asked Galatzan about a YouTube video I had just watched. In the video -- shot during her campaign in the spring of 2007 -- Galatazan said: "I am really running for school board to make sure that my boys get the kind of world class public education that they are entitled to."

Later in the video she complained that an elementary school in Sherman Oaks didn't have enough money to purchase more paper for the copy machine. Then, in the video, she said, "You know me as someone who ruffles feathers and isn't afraid to ask tough questions. I keep my word and I stand up for what I believe in."

So, I asked, what does it say about her honesty that last year she said that she wouldn't run and now she's saying she might.

"That's definitely something I'm thinking a lot about. It really comes down to what can I do about [making] the community...the kind of place my kids and my family are safe and how are my skills best used," she said. "It's been an interesting year at L.A. Unified and the truth is I don't know how much I can do on the Board or any one person can do on the Board."
[...]

Why do reporters hate themselves in the morning?

Because I stupidly did not ask her about the tens of thousands of current and future LAUSD students she represents besides her own children -- many of whom don't have a mom who can run for office.

The few parents I've spoken with after her announcement to run have voiced disappointment and more than a little annoyance with Tamar. She was elected to do a job, they say, and now that parents need her more than ever, she's ditched us ... before she's even finished serving out her elected term.

Sounds like another recent quitter in the news. But what differentiates our local "quitter" from the Quitta from Wasilla, is that Tamar hasn't officially quit her school board seat, instead she's using her position on the school board as a stepping stone to a different job, a higher paying job to be sure, and one that will be helpful to the man who helped get her elected to the school board: Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. She will attempt to do her school board job while campaigning hard the next few weeks for the CD 2 election on September 22. Good luck with that.

As for all the recent public outreach Tamar and her staff have been engaging in (Non Title I School Parent Summits, Student Video Contests, etc.), it all feels and rings hollow now. Those Non Title I School meetings and video contests seem more planned for future campaign resume fluffing and for campaign literature and commercial use than to truly help frustrated parents try to effect change for their children and for LAUSD in general. Apparently, I'm not the only one who's noticed the timing in all of this, and the scheduling and locations of where she's been stumping the hardest.

But now what? Now who do we Valley parents turn to for help navigating the maze that is LAUSD? We had hoped Tamar would help us, but it seems we parents have been left to fend for ourselves with nary a "by your leave..." from Ms. Galatzan.

A search of her Los Angeles school board website has no official announcement from Ms. Galatzan regarding her decision to run for the Council seat recently vacated by newly elected City Controller Wendy Greuel or what this means for the parents and students in her district. There are no assurances to parents that her work on our behalf would continue, or even reasons why she felt the need to leave her position for a new shinier one.

I attended one of Tamar's Parent Summits at Balboa Magnet Elementary. I wasn't alone; a large group of parents sat right along side me for roughly three (I was reminded it was longer) four hours on a Saturday morning as we listened to Tamar and her staff go on an on about Non Title I schools and how we would organize and work together to change The Way Things Are currently in the battle of the Haves (Title I schools) and the Have Nots (Non Title I schools). Now in hindsight, it feels like those three hours were my unwitting contribution to the "Elect Tamar for CD 2" campaign. Little did I know that I'd be playing the part as "extra" in what I'm sure will be photos and video footage of that summit at Balboa Magnet. She managed to suck in a lot of desperate and anxious administrators, parents and teachers for her three hour campaign photo shoot.

But hey, I can't really complain; I scored some warm and yummy LAUSD coffee-cake out of that hostage situation Parent Summit deal. So, yeah... thanks for that Tamar. It wasn't a total waste of a beautiful Saturday I could have spent in a hundred more productive ways and with my family.

Oh, and good luck to you in all your future endeavors. It's been real. Real disappointing.

Speaking of Steve Hymon -- what the @$*%@& ever happened to him? He was one of the few hacks at the Times that didn't get all misty eyed when my sometimes boss Tony V. came by for a photo opp, and who asked questions that we didn't already have cue cards pre-printed for.

For those of us who easily spin LAT reporters like so many motorized dreidels, he at least made it interesting some times.

Is he still peddling his 2-wheeler around Pasadena, or did he take the last train for the (other) coast?

Write if you have work, Stev-arino, you were always a worthy opponent, and I've got some new (well . . ."recycled") snake oil to sell to any working press on too tight a deadline to check facts!

The work for the City was supposed to be freelance editing for one master plan document -- for about 10 weeks, just over the summer. I don't think that constitutes "working" for Alarcon. I wouldn't label Hymon a sellout, just yet -- just a guy trying to pay his bills and keep tires on his bike.

Word out of the Krekorian camp is Paul isn't so certain of an easy win anymore. He didn't test the waters in S-T before announcing and many now say they'll support Tamar in a runoff even though her husband pushed the Home Depot deal. Krekorian is THAT unwelcome there.

You ask for it......

As endorsement rallies go, this one was made to order: Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa endorsed Democrat Phil Angelides for governor Tuesday before a crowd of cheering children chanting: "Go, Phil, Go!"

But there was a problem: Students attending Los Angeles public schools are not supposed to be used as props for partisan political events. To make matters worse, students missed class when they were not supposed to -- all the while enduring political speeches in a steaming auditorium. One group of students had to stand on stage for about an hour, and one girl fainted on stage.

Exactly happened at Foshay Learning Center, near downtown? Was it a cynical, improper manipulation of students? Or perhaps sloppy planning? Or one more sign of a disconnect between the mayor's office and the school district?

It depends on who's pointing the finger.

Having the event at a school in the first place was a potential problem. Board policy states, "Schools may not be used as a forum for political events -- neither individual political campaigns nor political issues."

Pilar Marrero, a columnist for the Spanish-language La Opinion, first raised the issue in a Wednesday column.

District officials acknowledged the policy and also conceded that they allowed the event to go forward after word got to them belatedly. But students were never supposed to become advocates, they said.

"We welcome today's current leaders to come to our schools and interact with our future leaders about the importance of community and civic engagement," said Lucy Okumu, director of external affairs for the district.

It was, apparently, a last-minute affair -- especially considering how long the Angelides campaign had been waiting for the popular Democratic mayor to endorse the Democratic state treasurer.

Campaign staffers for the mayor started working the phones Friday along with officials of the teachers union to find a school to serve as a backdrop. The principal at Foshay was willing, provided that the district approved, said Josh Pechthalt, a vice president of United Teachers Los Angeles.

Pechthalt relayed the message to "the mayor's office," as he put it. The mayor's office was, in this case, Mike Trujillo, working with Nathan James. Both are full-time employees of the mayor's Excellence in L.A. Schools, which promoted Villaraigosa's bid for substantial authority over the Los Angeles Unified School District. Trujillo alerted Angelides' people, said James, adding his involvement ended there.

11:13, AV's first move should be to dump Ace. He "won" for AV in 05 only because he was the right guy in the right place at the right time, "the first Mexican mayoral candidate" in 150 years. When Hahn was generally disliked or distrusted and the economy was booming, people receptive to AV's message. But when the stars aren't already perfectly aligned, like for Hillary or for AV or Jack Weiss in 09, he's helpless.

He still tried to run them all the way they did Bill Clinton 15 years ago, old-school, didn't react fast enough to the "new media" campaigns against them -- clean but clever in Obama's case, dirty in Trutanich's/Shallman's case. Ace is also going to lose for Kamala Harris.

Newsom felt he was looking too much like a twit with all the twittering so he wanted to look more "serious" and "big." He DID look like a twit because he is.

Probably some combo of old and new is ideal these days, so AV could keep Ace to assist but not let him run the show again.

And just think of the motivation Newsom's "dear friend" would have in getting even with Newsom.

Who seems to have a history of screwing his campaign managers, either literally through their wives or figuratively.

HERE'S THE FIRST THING I AM EXCITED ABOUT IN THIS AREA OF STRATEGY, CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION AS CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATE: Helping LAUSD parents and other concerned community members "take real control" of failing LAUSD schools!!! Zuma Dogg is here to say, THE PARENTS AND COMMUNITY HAVE A REAL OPPORTUNITY...IN A REAL AND MEANINGFUL WAY...AS NEVER BEFORE...TO ORGANIZE AND LITERALLY "TAKE OVER" YOUR LOCAL LAUSD SCHOOL!

When I got into City Hall activism, I really started to try and figure out the biggest problems and where all trails led to...IT'S THE SCHOOL SYSTEM!!!

LAUSD IS A DROP-OUT FACTORY THAT CANNOT PRODUCE ENOUGH QUALIFIED GRADUATES TO BE HIRED FOR LOCAL JOBS LIKE TEACHERS, POLICE, ENGINEERS, FIRE, ETC!!! Then they turn into drop outs; and the smartest geniuses of the drop outs end up rising to the top and running the gangs that we end up have to fight.

And, I think LAUSD is the most tangle-up, mixed-up, ABSOLUTLEY IMPOSSIBLE organization, that is ABSOLUTELY HOPELESS...and BARACK OBAMA NEEDS TO FLY IN TO ATTEND THESE BOARD MEETINGS AND START YELLING ABOUT IT LIKE ZUMA DOGG!!!

When I ran for mayor, late last year/early this year; when people would ask, "What do you plan to do about the schools?" I would always say how important I felt the issue was (most important!), I would also have to say, "Unfortuatley, it's not under City jurisdiction and you cannot take direct control."

HOWEVER...it appears things may be changing: You may have heard of the "Parents Revolution" (L.A. Parents Union). They are picking up momentum and ZD says will REALLY be picking up even much more momentum, very soon. And they are there to help parents and community members of a school, get a petition going...where if you get 51% of parents of the school, and even parents who MAY have kids attending the school in a couple years, or so...

THERE IS A FEDERAL PROGRAM THAT ALLOWS THE COMMUNITY TO TAKE CONTROL OF THE SCHOOL!!! You can either choose to turn it into a Charter school; OR, you can LITERALLY install your own ciriculum and make all the program decisions. Overall...OPTIONS, Y'ALL!!!

AND, at the end of August, LAUSD will be voting on an item that will allow them to "strip away" control of FAILING schools, and hand them over to people who present themselves to the board, along with a PLAN to operate the school.

THERE WILL BE ENORMOUS PRESSURE FOR LAUSD TO APPROVE THIS.

So something that presented itself to me today, through a conversation I was having with someone who was congratulating me on my CD2 candidacy, ended up inspiring me proclaim the first creative, strategic and innovative energy I want to put out there as an ACTIVIST, and will expand through my candidacy and hopefully into office is: ZUMA DOGG WANTS TO PUSH HARD AND GET OUT THERE TO RAISE AWARENESS THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY AND PUT THEM IN TOUCH WITH COMMUNITY LEADERS WHO CAN MAKE PARENTS AND NEIGHBORS AWARE THAT WITH ONLY 51% OF THE PARENTS...YOU CAN TAKE CONTROL OF THE SCHOOL!!!

It takes a lot of parental and community involvement...but if you are a parent or property owner/resident, who is SICK of the LAUSD plauge in your neighborhood...ZUMA DOGG IS READY TO HELP GET THOSE PETITIONS SIGNED...AND OFFER ALL THE IDEAS AND STRATEGY I CAN THINK OF...AND PUSH FOR THIS.

Zuma Dogg is "YES" on this new and innovative opportunities that will allow commmunities to finally do what they always wished they could. KICK LAUSD BEAURACRACY OUT OF THE BUILDING!!! And again...it ain't gonna happen with just Zuma Dogg and Lydia Grant.

The Parents Union isn't going to knock down your door to MAKE you do it. YOU HAVE TO TAKE ON THE CHALLENGE. YOU HAVE TO ASSUME THE LEADERSHIP ROLE! YOU JUST HAVE TO START DOING IT!!! YOU COMPLAIN THAT YOU HAVE NO SAY IN THE MATTER WHEN YOU DIDN'T HAVE A SAY.

Now there is an opening...and ZD, as an activist, and/or candidate wants to speed this thing up as quickly as possible and raise as much awareness as possible. So looks like I can already use my platform as City Council candidate to start pushing on this!

But thank you for saying nothing I say is mine. You are right. I DO regurgitate stuff back from the community that they tell me. I thought that was the point? To reflect what the community is telling you?

I have said repeatedly...EVERYTHING I KNOW, IS BECAUSE SOMEONE FROM THE COMMUNITY TOLD ME. I just happen to be someone who gets worked up and passionate about it enough to amplify the words.

"Not just empty words, but lies," said Chick. "Soundbites and fancy speeches, he said and did anything to get my endorsement and get elected, but it was not just empty words. It was all lies." Don't forget the bible-thumping too; sure sign of a snake-oil salesman.

But as for acumen and sense beyond sheet hate, how's your hack holding up? Theatrical pretense and ham-acting aside, that night school, the famous South Bay University College of Law that disappeared in a flash without a trace, doesn't seem to have prepared him to deal with the bothersome details of, you know, the law.

Just 23 days in he officially imploded, though he actually did it before he took office but even though people tried to give him the benefit of a doubt, after a number of tries, each dumber and more buffoonish than the last, he's finally managed to become the biggest laughingstock in the briefest amount of time ever.

Rocky seems like a genius by comparison and a pillar of integrity and that much-touted "ethics and transparency."
