From the Eastern Group Publications, "Mayor's Townhall taken over by teachers"

This picture is worth some "pesos of laughs" at the expense of "Mayor Gordovillar".
We here at Mayor Sam were alerted to this in a previous comment, early in the week.
Interesting Red Spot didn't post what a joke last night's budget town hall was with gang banger mayor. It wasn't about the city budget but all about LAUSD. Teachers and students crammed the place yelling and carrying signs. It was the most out of control meeting ever. You couldn't hear him talk cause of the yelling "don't lay off teachers" Only one station channel 9 showed up. The gang banger has lost his luster. It was so hostile there is now word about walk outs and riots.

The town hall started off friendly enough with the mayor making sure that translation services were being offered, praising Councilmember Jose Huizar for his support and work, and acknowledging the teachers’ and their supporters presence—who made up about a third of the audience.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa held back-to-back town hall meetings in Highland Park, right, and Boyle Heights, left, on Monday that drew different responses from residents. In Highland Park he was greeted by a receptive audience, but in Boyle Heights, he was besieged by pink-slipped teachers and their supporters.
Referencing his plan to save city jobs by asking employees to work one hour without pay, go without pay raises and to contribute more to their pensions, Villaraigosa also said he believes there is a way to avoid teacher layoffs. But “I’d have to be a snake salesman to look you in the eye and tell you that we can do all of that with a snap of my fingers,” Villaraigosa said. “It’s going to mean everyone participating.”
Teachers and supporters appeared to be prepared for a showdown, however, with about a third of the audience standing throughout the meeting and several people and children holding up signs that read: “Actions Speak Louder than Words,” “Don’t Increase Class Size,” “93 percent of Teachers at Roosevelt don’t have confidence in the Mayor’s Partnership,” to cite a few.
The mayor said he agreed with teachers and their supporters that the goal of federal stimulus dollars is to save jobs, and that he too does not want teacher lay offs or class size increases. But it was clear the teachers weren’t going to be swayed from why they were there: to press their agenda that no teachers be laid off.
Villaraigosa attempted to remind the audience of his track record supporting labor unions and his efforts to prevent teacher layoffs by LAUSD, but he also implied that the teachers’ union, UTLA, needs to be more flexible.
“The fact of the matter is there is no way to resolve this budget, even with the school district, without some sacrifice all the way. The numbers are too big. Particularly right now, it looks like the people of California are not going to pass the initiatives on May 19…if we don’t pass those initiatives, the budget deficit in LA Unified is not going to get that much better,” said Villaraigosa, who was shouted down as he tried to speak.
......just another sign of a looming "lame duck era" emerging at City Hall.

"93 percent of Teachers at Roosevelt don’t have confidence in the Mayor’s Partnership"

And Antonio was a former UTLA rep?

He's being put on the defensive and a defensive Antonio will get nasty and reach for his box cutter.

Those Measure losses, Jack Weiss getting his ass kicked and Judy Chu falling victim to good old fashion race based politics (the kind that Parke used to usher Antonio into the mayor's office) are taking their tow on this hair trigger mayor.

THE MAYOR IS OFFICIALLY A LOSER. Because he stuck his nose in LAUSD now he's in a bigger mess. Why isn't the media reporting on how the schools he is in charge of are failing and he's done nothing. Where ever the gang banger mayor goes now you can hear the groans, negative comments and see the snears. He's becoming the "hated one" in the city.

Guess that town hall meeting to sell the suckers on your "budget" wasn't such a good idea after all, eh Parke?

I don't think any spouses need to be pulled in for the sins of the official- unless the were included in a discussion to make it relevant.

And all that fatness is to fill the role of fat cats, living well on a nice salary while everywhere else belts are being tightened.

And why do teachers complain to Tony on the City Budget when it's LAUSD that controls things for them; Tony just made himself a hole by getting into the LAUSD picture in the takeover attempt. He was not even with a good handle on the City affairs, with his mind on travel, campaigns and other non-city issues.

Now that everything's hitting the fan, he's getting that LAUSD spillover blame and teachers are taking their potshots at him at any opportunity. Why not? Maybe Tony's ego will push him to butt in again to side with the teachers (and their union).

His better judgment mght take over and keep him focused on not screwing over the public too much on his own city budget mess. Selling of property rights (leasing) like parking meters and city lots for decades will be costly to the public. And I hear that the prep work is being done on the meters to make them credit/debit card usable which would make them ready for marketing off the rights.

Tony will be gone after this term, but he's plunging the city into a course of no-return for his own attempt to preserve his chances for Governor. He's dumping all negatives, like the pension, ex-pension, board members. Any tainted persons not yet discovered will be dumped when found.

And the teachers are pretty bold, but why not? Pushing everyone and everything might get some plan moving to save a few jobs for a semester or two. Still, the idea of the union expecting teachers to be immune from layoffs when money supplies are shrivelling up is pretty presumptuous and misleading the membership.

Nice to see the Mayor at an event where people were actually allowed to confront him and his ridiculous policies.

A true rarity here in LA.

Phil,

That wasn't by design. Somebody already got fired for this debacle - or is clearly on the way out. And don't be surprised if it is one of Huizar's staffers.
