Parke speakes again............, on the City Attorney Race

This muttering rant from the "private street enclave" above the masses in CD 1/14.
Political consultant Parke Skelton says Cooley’s endorsement isn’t influencing voters “by any stretch of the imagination.” And in fact, endorsements generally have little effect on what most voters do. But key endorsements can dramatically raise an unknown candidate’s profile and ability to raise funds.
That utterance from Parke in Tibby Rothman and Jill Stewart's story on District Attorney Steve Cooley's role in initiating the Trutanich for City Attorney campaign, may be an attempt by Parke to spin the role and and the credit that Cooley should be given in taking on the Villar Machine as highlighted in this excerpt.
Cooley has survived in that hot seat partly by avoiding embarrassing controversies. Yet here he was, deciding to take on a deep-pocketed downtown political apparatus run by the hyperpolitical Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who has spent much of his time not addressing city problems, but instead building a political machine that includes much of the Los Angeles Unified School board and even the chief of police, William J. Bratton.
With less than two weeks until the May 19 election, Cooley’s decision at Langer’s has not backfired. Instead, it has set City Hall on tenterhooks and spurred an old-fashioned, mud-slinging race between two very different candidates that is either man’s to lose.
“It’s a hot election, I’ll tell you, with a lot of heat and a lot of rancor,” says Cooley today. “But you know what? This is healthy. It’s healthy. It’s really, really, really good for L.A.”
.....and a Trutanich victory would do much to improve the ethical health at City Hall, despite of Parke's mutterings.

Carmen Trutanich has the kind of leadership skills this city needs. He's not a politician, he's a real guy, who looks you in the eye and tells you like it is. What you see is what you get. He's going to be a bright light in the city attorneys office. I look forward to him being the next city attorney.

Parke's half right, endorsements don't count for much, what does count is what happens at the polls in election day.

The battle of the tv ads seems to be where this election will be won. Weiss has chosen a strategy of attack ads that are solely about Trutanich and don't even mention Weiss.

Trutanich has ads that both attack Weiss and another ad that describes Trutanich as the law enforcement choice.

Weiss hasn't yet got the big money advantage that he had in the primary, and the next campaign finance reports should be interesting.

Weiss was able to count on name recognition, but now his name is recognized increasingly in negative terms.

It really will be a refreshing change to have Trutanich in City Hall, and who knows, the next round of councilmember elections could see even more change as Los Angeles voters realize the power they have.

I doubt anyone outside of this blog will vote for Trutanich. Had you read this blog during the mayoral election, you would have sworn Villaraigosa was dead meat.

Didn't happen then either. Won't happen now.

Welcome to your new role as City Attorney, Mr. Weiss!

Wake up 1:04AM - are you the Weiss blogger who "just happened to be feeding her baby?" or are you the one that usually says "I don't know much about either candidate but ...?"

In the Mayoral race, Villar had over $2M compared to the combined force of the opponents $250k. Most of that was Walter Moore''s and resulted in Villar 54%, Moore & Co, 46%.

In the primary, Weiss's $17M got him 36%, and the combined total of the opponents was around $1M, they got 64%.

So do the math. Weiss is not out raising Trutanich, who is still raising money, while Weiss has to return contributions from al illegal fundraiser.

Unless Weiss can more than double the money raised by Trutnaich, his welcome will be to the growing number of California's unemployed.

Of course I could be wrong, Weiss might need three or four times as much money to overcome the negatives of his record.

Parke is right on one count - Cooley's name dosent mean anything to the average voter.

However the fact that he is the DA and endorses someone lends weight and he has helped Trutanich raise serious money.

On the other hand I'd rather have Villaraigosa and Boxer over Cooley, Magic over Shaq, and Bratton over Baca..

JACK WEISS IS A TERRIBLE CHOICE, PERIOD!! HE HAD 4 YEARS TO DO WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT: WHAT WAS HE WAITING FOR?. THE ONLY WAY JACK WILL WIN IS IF HE GOES TO "PIPER TECH" AND THREATENS THERE EMPLOYEES WITH JOB LOSS IF THE ELECTION RESULTS DON'T SHOW HIM WINNING, "VOTER FRAUD". NOT ABOVE HIM OR THE MAYOR TO VIOLATE THE VOTE PROCESS. I SUSPECT IT'S HAPPENED BEFORE.
