WASHINGTON -- The Bush
administration this morning formally asked Congress to grant sweeping new powers to the Treasury secretary to buy as much as $700 billion in deeply troubled mortgage-related assets as part of a herculean effort to clean up Wall Street's financial crisis.
A draft of the plan was delivered to Congress early today, and lawmakers will spend the weekend poring over it. As written, Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson and his successor would be handed expansive authority, beyond the reach of U.S. courts, to attempt to rescue staggering financial markets.

Palin keeps tripping over herself in trying to explain why she fired her Public Safety Commissioner, which turned into the now infamous Troopergate scandal.
Now she says that he was fired because he made an unauthorized trip to Washington, D.C. to seek federal funds for an anti-sexua-violence program.
Now ABC News has uncovered documents showing that Palin's chief of staff approved the trip using standard protocols.
In another embarassing attempt to spin this boo-boo, the governor's office says that they approved the trip but found out about its purpose later.
Kind of makes you wonder why the chief of staff didn't think about asking the question that each of you would ask: why are you going, and what are going to do there?
Seems that trips to Washington to secure funding to build a road to the Bridge to Nowhere is OK with Palin, but dealing with sexual violence is not as high a priority.
You know, it's hard to make up this stuff. Now I know where Jon Stewart gets his material. Palin is a treasure trove for comedians.

Let's talk about a guy who made it into the US Senate and after 148 days decided to run for President. A guy who was in the state legislature and had the gall to vote Present...what does that mean? "I have no opinion?"
A guy who would pick a plagiarizer as his running mate. And not once he got caught but twice! He even lied on his resume.
Neither could take the pressure and or have the strength to make it for five minutes in a POW camp.
And all the "I would have or I wanted to, or I thought about" serving our country is a bunch of bunk.
Politics is for the those who can think under pressure and who can make clear cut decisions. For those who are thick skinned, have a real vision and message they are passionate about and don't need a teleprompter to tell it.
I don't need to agree with every issue to vote for a candidate, but I need to know it's their vision and not someone standing behind them being a "puppet master".
Don't you think we see enough Puppet Masters here in LA and CA politics... I mean look at us, we have a Mayor who can't stay in town, and a Governor who can't decide what party he's in...

But 30 minutes into the program, the park had filled to its 10,000 person capacity, and another 8,000 had to be turned away.
