Zuma, Where are you, we all take back what we said about you. Zuma has now been elevated to best field reporter on Mayor Sam's blog.

The other blogging Burros must not leave the house to acquire any real knowledge about Los Angeles politics. At least we know Zuma gets out of his van and has a real feel for the city of Los Angeles.

Dude(tte),

It's a long, holiday weekend. Chill. What's wrong with spreading some Girl Scout love and helping out our future pols. Because seriously, some of those girls are downright scary when it comes to civic duty, personal responsibility and a conduct code that they adhere to strictly. These are amazing young women (and let's not forget our adorable little Daisy and Brownie Scouts). I think they could teach some of the people in City Hall a thing or two.

The Girl Scout Law

I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.

Tagalog (pronounced [tɐˈgaːlog]) is one of the major languages of the Republic of the Philippines. It is the most spoken Philippine language in terms of the number of speakers.

Tagalongs® or Peanut Butter Patties®: These are round cookies with a layer of peanut butter on top, and covered in chocolate. These cookies come in a red box.

Wait! Jan Perry already got to them.

"Girl Scouts of the USA is proud to announce that all Girl Scout cookies are now "zero trans fat per serving" with the same great taste that has made them one of America's favorite treats over the years. While some "zero trans fat per serving" varieties of Girl Scout cookies were available in 2005 and 2006, this year all varieties will contain less than 0.5 grams trans fat per serving, which meets or exceeds the FDA guidelines for the "zero trans fat" designation."

Hello Valley Doll and Mayor Sam,

My five-year-old is wheat intollerant. I support the Girl Scouts and the cookies but I don't keep cookies in our home. I bake ours with oat and soy flour but...can I just write a check and not take the cookies?

All these traditions are hard for us. We need more support from the schools for kids on special diets.

I agree with the person who said about New Math. The Girl Scout cookies are a great tradition but we know so much more about our health in the modern world. They didn't keep up. They should offer wheat and dairy free cookies for us moms who have other concerns.

Thanks for this blog. We moms deserve our place in city politics, too.

Dear 9:44

You are amazing. I have a neighbor who has the same food issues, and I know it's a challenge. I think Girl Scouts are trying to catch up to speed with healthier options, but you are right, they need to come up with more options for families with concerns like yours. Your five year old is lucky to have a Mommy who will go out of her way to make special cookies and I have to tell you, those are always the yummiest cookies ever ... the ones made with love by Mom.

And yes, you can always buy your cookie boxes and donate them back to the Scouts. I believe that the girl's pick a charity to donate to, and that's where your donated cookies are sent.

Huh?

Each troop keeps only a percentage from the sale of each box. Those funds help pay for educational field trips for the girls, supplies for crafts, and community activities. And our troop, for example, voted to donate a percentage of our profits from the sale of Girl Scout Cookies to a children's charity.

That one box of cookies you purchase helps not only the Troop from whom you purchased it, but any other charities the Girl Scouts happen to partner with during the drive.

As long as it's in anyone else's home but mine

::rimshot::

Seriously, tho' ... it's a concept that has never even crossed my mind except on those days when I'm sick as a dog and don't want to get out of bed to drive carpool.

I've been so lucky that my experience, and my children's experience with public school has been nothing but fabulous. I was extremely fortunate to buy into a neighborhood (back in '03 ... we got it for a steal) that pretty much wins the Triple Crown for schools. Our elementary, middle and high school are off the charts in performance. And so I don't know first hand the challenges other parents may face who have to send their kids to public schools in areas that aren't as great.

But what I do believe, is that kids need other kids to grow. They need to be subjected to all kinds of kids. From different neighborhoods, religions, cultures ... I mean, it's a great big world out there ... as parent's I think it's our job to show our kids just how big a world it really is.

Yeah, Valley Doll, I think it's a wonderful idea to put a white middle class (or, horrors, slightly more affluent, the kind who plays classical music instead of rap) girl or boy into a hood where the cliques are virtually all Latino vs. black, and the "white" kids lump into either Russian or Armenian immigrant groups (which is the residency of Hollywood flats -- but that's where all the kids from the wealthier hills as far east as Coldwater and the east side of Benedict Canyons are assigned. These are areas way more expensive than anything you could afford out in the West Valley -- but maybe the parents don't want to drive 1/1/2 hrs each way to Hollywood studios.)

These are schools where if you go to the playground to check out the school, white kids who don't fit into one of these ethnic preservation-enclaves are regularly bullied and beaten. And that's just elementary school.

These are swell multi-cultural experiences, I admit.

You know, home schooling includes online "academies" where the parents don't teach, just make sure the kid does his/her work -- by the upper middle and high school levels, kids should be independent and this kind of work teaches them to become more so. It's a lot more relevant to college, actually, where no one knows if you show up at most classes or not -- as long as you do well on tests, papers, etc. Public school and crappier private schools are heavily about homework, because they can't get that much done in class with all the distractions. Many gifted kids actually proceed ahead of public school curricula.

Many colleges realize this and are looking favorably at "digital school" kids who have other activities, too. ("Homeschool" where the parents teach without outside monitoring and taking the same tests other kids take, is a different thing, which can work but it's not for many parents.)

As for exposing kids to other types of people -- there are plenty of other ways, from orchestras, to karate and gymnastics teams, acting and music lessons and auditions, etc. There's study abroad, taking time off during the school year to go away with parents (I'm jealous of people who can do that and still do their work online anywhere), foreign language classes in town. Kids can volunteer to teach reading in inner city schools at times they couldn't go if enrolled in brick and mortar schools. This sort of schedule is what you make it. (Kids can even join a Scout Troop at the local church or school.)

Kids I know who do this are a lot more mature and organized than most public school kids even from "good" schools, and the "options" LAUSD provides the most affluent areas aren't even worth discussing.

Since this thread is about schools and moms...

January 20, 2008 12:46 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said:

12:46 makes some strong arguments, especially about digital schools. My concern is that we've got our kids stuck on the computer screen far too much, now. At least my two kids are. Children with parents who are willing to provide all these extracurricular activities would benefit from a better education than from even a good private school. But where is the guarantee that those kids are getting the range of human experience 12:46 describes? I'm afraid many parents would stick their kids in front of their digital school thinking that will do it.

Waaaaaaaa ... I gots no place to send my kids to school!

Waaaaaa ... I don't wanna commute to work .... waaaa waaaa waaaaaa.

::pee wee herman chuckle::

Rich people. You guys make me laugh.

Mr. Valley Doll rolls with the boys at 210 W. Temple, 18th floor. And after numerous times being trapped in those ancient, crappy CCB elevators for over half an hour, he only takes the stairs now. And if you think he enjoys that commute (through rain and sleet and snow and all that other crap ...) you're even sillier than I thought. But he does it. It's a choice we made when considering HOW and WHERE we would raise our family. (Thanks for taking one for the Fam, Daddy!)

But, as I said ... I've never considered the concept of homeschool. I merely spoke of my own experience with public school ... which has been WONDERFUL for our family ... because of the lovely, quaint, NOT RICH, THO' ... loving neighborhood, where we have keys to each other's houses, the Moms play Bunco and T.P. the house of the Mom that flakes for that evening, and we give each other hand-me-down clothes and recycle toys and books and the stay at home moms help out the working moms with childcare and picking up kids from school.

We don't winter in Hawaii, and we don't summer in Jamaica. We pack up the SUVs and the mini vans and try and entertain our kids with free or inexpensive activities. We aren't rich, at least not in the ways that matter to you. But I'd like to think that we provincial moms in the valley are richer in ways you might not ever understand.

good luck with the kids in your school area and the troubles you report. hopefully, someone will get off their ass and do something to help those kids. hmmm ... wonder if any of you will step up?

Valley Doll, your boasting about how Mr. Valley Doll drives all that way downtown to pollute the highways so that you can raise three brats as a "sacrifice" really makes me teary- eyed. Then you "load up the SUV's and minivans" to drive your little clones hither and yon, creating more pollution and congestion. Gee, what a HUGE service to our city.

How HORRIBLE are the people who live in expensive areas and drive Priuses or electric cars -- instead of clogging up the roads for hours in SUV's and minivans.

Actually, fat-assed "doll," we and my neighbors are paying to educate YOUR little clones as well as the illegals' and everyone else. One homeowner here probably educates three of your households, with three kids each, of dull fat-asses in the valley. And one fat-ass household like yours probably uses up an inverse carbon footprint, maybe nine times the westside's.

What benefit do you provide the rest of us, miss fat-ass Doll? What benefit do the rest of us get from your "sacrifice," exactly?

Talk about benefiting from secession, it would be us, as we're subsidizing the dull Valley fat- asses who are more akin to your counterparts in Cleveland or Des Moines than New York or London.

You wanna benefit the rest of us? Move closer to downtown -- have Mr. Valley Doll drive much less (it'll probably shrink his fat ass, too) and leave your smog, little clones and your fat ass in... Pasadena.

Meanwhile, your Mr. Valley Doll is the best argument in favor of congestion pricing. He should have to pay a min. of $20.oo each way.

Gays are among the biggest subsidizers of the long distance commuting, polluting, multi-child households in cookie-cutter houses.

With one kid costing the LAUSD about $7,500, three kids cost almost $23,000, and no way do their parents pay nearly that much in taxes.

Meanwhile, a couple of gays who buy a house for $3 million and pay $35,000/yr with no kids, subsidize those "breeders." Then subsidize the city with private security, etc. -- chew on that with your cookies, Mr. and Mrs. Valley Doll.

And they keep all kinds of businesses from restaurants to gyms to clothing boutiques and decorators in business.

Then there are all the retired people, families with kids who don't use public schools but have to pay huge taxes for them anyway, and others who pay for Valley Doll's and the gardener's kids.

If these people did all move out of town, too, and left us to the poor, immigrants and the fat Valley breeders/ commuting polluters (and overusers of public services and roads while complaining the most), nothing could balance the budget.

Yes, that toll of $20 each way to downtown, or city entry fee of $20 like they have in London, sounds like a great idea for the West Valley dolls to pay at least some of their fair share. And yes on Prop S, since they have to rely on cellphones to keep in touch with each other as they race around polluting our city and stalling traffic.

The SUVs and mini vans are used to carpool several children at one time. Not as a cute fashion accessory. Whenever we have to take kids anywhere, we try to do it en masse. So, I could either buy an actual bus, but I think my gasoline bill would be double what it is now. You can't have it both ways. We either take several cars separately, or we carpool in a larger car.

As for the lovely non-breeding gays: Much respect, but we have several families in our group with gay parents. So please don't assume to be the spokesperson for gays. You're not. Your opinion is as subjective as mine. It's all about perception and the reality of the situation. I'm only waxing grateful at the reality my situation. IF you wanna hate 'cause I'm working it out, go right ahead ...

I'm terriby, terribly sorry that you feel burdened by helping to educate children. I wish there were some way to make you feel better about it, unfortunately there apparently isn't. Just know that many of the children that your tax dollars help educate DO become doctors who help society. They become lawyers who ... well ... they ... uh ...

They become teachers and artists and writers and all sorts of wonderful things! Just think of the wonderful Karma you're generating with your tax dollars.

Is it so hard to look at it like that? Are you going to be bitter and hateful to those of us who have chosen to have and/or raise children?

Guess what, your two fat adults with all their health problems by the time you reach 50 and that of your 3 pudgy kids cost way more... Nice bit of prejudice, though, that all gays have AIDS of HIV.

I'm not going to get into the anti- gay stance of the Scouts, since it can have a good benefit on kids overall.

Lame attempt to tell the rest of us we are getting "good karma" from educating your kids and subsidizing Mr. Fatty Poo's Brown Gases to work, though. Most of us get plenty of good karma in ways of our choosing, and which make sense.

I hear Glendale has some nice view homes of downtown, short commute to Mr. Valley Doll's office. Bet he'd like the lifestyle a lot more. And so would the rest of us. Meanwhile those "congestion fees" are payable and overdue.

Seems to me, the westside person was just laying out the issue as it is, that the westside pays way too much in taxes considering they subsidize the rest of the city and can't use the horrible schools they're assigned to -- then Valley Doll comes back all mean and nasty about class-envy stuff, with how boo-hoo, she can't take trips to Hawaii "like what's important to westside person" as she assumes, then gets herself trapped in admitting her family use up way too many carbon footprints (i.e, create smog and congestion without paying their fair share for it), have westside person and gays (whew, what prejudice there) subsidize them, and then -- comes back with how these people are supposed to thank Ms. Valley Doll for raising them fine young' uns.

Know what? I'll bet the westside real estate turnover has accounted for at least 50% of the real estate tax increases annually, and if they got smart and awoke, and stopped being so damn P. C. and supporting Obama, they'd secede and let Valley Doll she how far she'd get in a city where it was just her kind and the really, really poor and illegals who don't speak English.

Instead of class envy and meanness, Mrs. Valley Doll should realize how thin a financial lifeboat is keeping her and her kids afloat in this city. And she and her kind say No to S because they're paying "too much?" Please...

No, I don't know the Mayor or work for him and frankly, he and LAUSD need a good kick in the pantalones. They've got to stop taking their bread and butter base for granted.

So now you're going to slap me with being anti-gay because ... ?

Keep trippin', babe. Work it out any way you need to. Spin away.

Measure S isn't about not wanting to pay a cell phone tax - it's about not being able to trust the Mayor or City Council to do what they say they will. I don't appreciate being told I'm voting for a tax REDUCTION, when in actuality, I'm doing the city a big favor by finally making legal that which has already been ruled a violation of a previously passed proposition. Try saying THAT 10 times really fast.

THAT's what all of this is about. That, and my fierce respect for fat-assed, pro-active moms, like the ones contacting Zuma for help. Those ladies kick-ass. Don't whine about the bad stuff going on around you if you aren't prepared to help change the situation.

I guess that's all I was trying to say.

You may commence with the hate...

Yeah, I remember all of that. It's never gone away. It's not really an issue I care to blog about since it isn't a Citywide issue like LAPD, Prop S, Housing, Traffic, NC or whatever. I hope you understand.

I'm not going to delete the stuff you just posted, because I aksed to hear about it -- it was finally explained in an understandable fashion, but that's all the coverage for now.

From here on in...it's all getting deleted on both sides of the issue.

I think one or two people are overly obsessed with all of this, and the number of comments are disproportionate compared to the amount of people affected.

If it's all true, and Rocky has a file, and all the CMs are on alert, and it's all out in the open...then you should be happy with that. You are not talking about someone who is in an elected/decision making position.

Personally, not that you helped clarify...I personally do not think Santiago & Associates is who you think it is. And that sh*t is gone starting tomorrow, too.

Maybe we should all just stick to more of the warm and fuzzy topics more familiar to this blog recently.

Get it all out, here and now. First of all, I have a feeling it will all be gone as soon as Mayor Sam sees it.

And although it may be an important issue, the standard ZD likes to use for his blogging is: Is this something that the people can change through activism? Is there anything actionable on the people's part here?

It is an interesting story, but again, some folks are overboard with it. And after today, that's it!

Points were made...awareness was raised...if anyone wants to tell me anything and everything...feel free to email me. But again, it's not the kind of Citywide issue in the context in which I refer.

Please keep in mind...for the most part, I still don't know who is who in this, and it still seem pretty cryptic to me. If LA Times is about to break it, then who cares about coverage in the comment section of a blog? And when it comes to deleting...i base it on content, not who posted it. (Again, I really don't know who is who in this, anyway.)

I'm glad LA Times will cover it. I don't say, "Darn, I could have broken the story!" Look at all the sh*t I cover that they intentionally stay away from.

Not every radio station can play every record that comes out...each station has their own "position".

Similarly, same applies here. So I'm not saying it isn't an interesting issue that deserves coverage...

And for the record...TONS of the sh*t was deleted this weekend by me...not because someone requested it...but because it was clearly non-sense b.s. that wasn't about anything relating to anything topical.

Besides that...I don't know what else to tell you.

But I understand a lot of the comments were being made by people who simply wanted to send a message to the poster. (But it's a little too much of stuff that is a little too inside, so that's enough for now. Anything else, email me: zumadogg@gmail.com, or just wait till the Times picks it up.

You didn't see ZD posting that stuff about the mayor's affair. And you can ask Mayor Sam and Red Spot how much I complained about all of it.

However, some people felt it had City implications because of the Universal connection -- and the fact that he ran on family values...

But again...you KNOW I didn't "go there". THE MAYOR'S OFFICE WILL VOUCH FOR ME ON THAT ONE. (They were appreciative.)

So thanks for using that as the example...guess I'm A-O.K. in your book, then, since I had nothing to do with the example you used.

So not only did I not pile on, I complained to other mayor sam bloggers about it.

NEXT!

And like I said, after this vetting...it's ALL going to be deleted...especially since I am a little more aware of the back story.

However, it's really not my job to sit here 24 hours a day deleting this stuff. Is it a bloggers job to check every single post against the U.S. copyright library and be a historian on every legal issue in the city? whether or not you think it appropriate to discuss it here is missing the point. The point is that she is HERE using stolen identities and has successfully driven away many people that would still be posting. Look at her attack on Valley Doll. That alone should make it worthy of a little explanation. Sadly for Valley Doll, it wont stop there as she may be finding out. My advice to you is to tell everyone that she could defame you to, that you have a known stalker that will stop at nothing. If you are sent threatening emails, send them to city council to add to the pile and post them for everyone to see. Exposing every little thing is the only way it stops even though it may be so outrageous in its content. I truly hope she is not after you but if she is, you will have support.

There's a lawsuit against Los Angeles. That's us. If the city swept it under the rug, and we found out later, we'd be livid and you know that, ZD. So, now we know.

I agree that we have no way of knowing the truth from reading these blogs, but we don't have to decide today. Maybe this person named here has every right to sue and deserves the damages she's seeking. We just don't know.

We would be wise to hold off judging until we have all the facts. I'd like to see the lawsuit if anyone can post it. Regardless, this is important civic discourse and it belongs on Mayor Sam.

At best it's trivial gossip and at worst it's vitriolic personal bile between losers who have nothing better to do with their time.

If that's interesting then I've got some official secrets to sell you cheap!

The inmates are running the asylum here. They've literally taken control of this blog away from Mayor Sam and the people who could make it into something worthwhile and turned it into a place where character assassination and committing overt libel are the preferred methodologies.

That's why this is all a waste of time. Why should anyone take our concern about Measure S and other real issues seriously when they have to wade through this irrelevant hate-mongering to find anything real? People who can't keep the BS off this blog can't be taken seriously about anything else either, simple as that.
