Monday Open Thread: Mayor Pondering Yet Another Tax Hike
According to Steve Hymon of the L.A. Times, in what appears to be the only story about local government, "The office of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has conducted polls to test voter sentiment about a possible ballot measure to fund more mass transit. But he hasn't proposed anything."
Is nothing happening at City Hall, or have the local papers just gone to 100% news blackout to help their buddies?
In any event, blog away. Mayor Sam would want it that way.

Walter: I can't tell you whether or not Antonio has actually conducted any polls to test voter sentiment about a possible ballot measure, but I do know that in the past several years there has been polling on this issue.
The results were that 61% would approve some type of tax to pay for more rail. In conservative counties such as Orange, Riverside, San Diego and San Bernardino, sales tax measures have passed with the required 67% majority.
This is not true for Los Angeles County, as we are still 6% away from having a chance.
This isn't really going to come from City Hall. It will come from Metro with a Metro Director asking that SB-314 or some other measure be introduced to allow a sales tax measure.
I hope this explains what the Mayor can and can't do. No news blackout or anyone hiding anything.

Talk about raising taxes to fund more transportation: They did a presentation at the Boyle Hts NC last week for the magic bullet train from SF to SD. It's gonna cost billions and goes on the ballot in '09 (if it doesn't get bumped again for the third time.)
Meanwhile, are LA's traffic problems caused by LA-SF, LD-SD commuters?

Zuma,
These ideas are paybacks. AV's donors want people to use their businesses from SF or SD.

correction: on the ballot in '08.

Antonio and his team should be looking at his own poll numbers. John & Ken KFI reported on radio show that they've dropped since he made his speech in Spanish at MacArthur Park somewhere in the low 20%. Of course all these lazy ass LA Reporters don't report any bad stories about Antonio but continue to kiss his butt. Wonder why they're all losing readers????
