Rallies May Fail to Draw Like Last Year

The big pro-illegal immigrant rallies will start up Tuesday morning. What's interesting about the marches is not so much who will be there or how many but who is sitting out. First off, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa plans to attend a Chamber of Commerce breakfast and then its off on his South-of-the-Border junket. Popular Spanish language radio broadcasters Eduardo "Piolin" Sotelo and Renán Almendárez "El Cucuy" Coello who whipped up the crowds last year and are credited with driving much of the turnout plan to sit out the rallies and encouraging their listeners to take on more traditional forms of protest such as writing letters and becoming citizens and voting.

Top rated KFI talkradio hosts John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou speculated that Coello and Sotelo as "entertainment" figures are ahead of the pulse of the people compared to activists such as Nativo Lopez or former Congresswoman Cynthia Kinney who are participating in the marches.

In a semi-related development, radio Arbitron ratings show that three of the top five radio stations in Los Angeles are Spanish language broadcasters.

Mayor V. appears to stand by his speech at last year's demonstration (remember the "We Clean Your Toilets" speech?). A sound clip Monday on the radio news has him saying that it was his "proudest" moment being there with them.

He further said that all they wanted was part of the "American Dream." Question: How is it that you want the "American" dream when many of these same forces are moving to eventually wipe out "American" things?

As one person put it, why do they (illegals) leave a s-hole and then want to make this country like that s-hole?

So the American Dream is actually with several qualifications attached, Mr. Villaraigosa, hardly the American Dream. This is a distinguishing feature from the LEGAL immigrants of this country's history, and is always glossed over by the activists.

The open borders strategy to try to downplay crowd turnout is obvious. I hope a million illegal aliens march; this will just mean less traffic and a better quality of life for a day for legal immigrants and a citizens.

It was also disgusting seeing villaraigosa standing alongside pedophile protector Mahony -- both pushing amnesty for their own narrow, selfish interests.

Story has it that the Fr Mahoney was a child of hispanic parentage and abandoned him. He was adopted by a family named Mahoney. If true this might explain why he defends less than desirable people

"Less than desirable people." - So that's why he defends pedophile priests from his headquarters at the "Taj Mahoney!"

The march last year backfired because of the arrogant, demanding attitude. They should have taken a more humble approach. Officials are backing off cause their constituents were pissed the support people who are breaking the law. To show the ignornance and arrogance of these people the police commission denied a permit for a group to march on 3rd&Vermont at 2pm. They gave them alternatives because they stated we want you to execerise your rights. Also, public safety was a big issue because most cops will be downtown for the Olympic/Broadway march. The assholes didn't like that and instead will be marching on the SIDEWALKS. This is why people are sick and tired of their attitude. They demand, demand and when they dont' get what they want they do it anyway.

The rallies last year backfired? Huh? Wasn't congress controlled by Republicans last year? These marches energized people and kudos to Piolin and El Cucuy, no need to have more marches, the point was made, and a resounding point it was. Anything else would come up short. The marches led by Javier Rodriguez are nothing more than self serving PR for a failed, old activist. Anything the Rodriguez Brothers touch turns to shit. It's not surprising that these brothers were the first role models Antonio Villar turned to.

12:27 you might be right but actually you are not. The people who participated in the rallies are a small portion of Hispanics and very, very few are registered voters or even able to vote.

On the contrary in the year since the marches Latino registration has gone up less than 1% in California (about .85% to be precise).

What put the Dems back in Congress was not Antonio Villaraigosa but George W. Bush. Coupled with his inept bumbling and fatigure for the war - and the fact that the Republicans are currently an organizational nightmare - hatred of Bush and opposition to Iraq is more responsible than anything even more than anything about the Democrats themselves.

When you take a look at who votes in this country, its old white people and old black people. These are the 1960s baby boom civil rights era kids. Most of them tend to be Democrats. Most of them were against the Vietnam war.

They are not even tuned into what is going on in LA.

good points 12:50. I would add that well-educated middle age citizens also vote, and seeing illegal alien line-cutters demand another amnesty generally repulses them.

Bush's inept handling of the Iraq quagmire, selective MSM reporting of GOP corruption, and historic trends for this point in a 2nd term prez's term led to GOP losing control of Congress. AND don't forget the House Dems who won by being TOUGHER on illegal immigration than Republican incumbents. This is what worries them and Pelosi -- if they cram another amnesty and guest worker scheme down middle class American's throats, they may well lose next time.
