4:15 p.m.A few thousand people on the lawn. Music played, but was largely drowned out by helicopters hovering overhead.
Most received the memo — wearing white t-shirts and waving red, white and blue. The vendors, however, took no chances, offering both the Mexican and American varieties.
This caught my attention: LAPD officers affixing American flags to their bicycles. Unsure of the significance (if any), and unfortunately I was unable to snap a photo.
Update 6:30 p.m.Police have reportedly fired foam baton rounds on masked, rock- and bottle-throwing demonstrators who refused to clear out of the street and vacate an area of the park unauthorized for the rally.
The rally has been shut down.
Cardinal Mahoney has spoken and Mayor Villaraigosa has probably just boarded a plane for Central America.
Will he come out in support of the LAPD's actions today? Does it trouble you that we really can't answer that question with any certainty?

You should update this thread becauase now there looks like a riot will soon start with the illegal radicals throwing rocks and bottles at cops. They didn't have a permit to be in street and now they are taunting police and throwing things at them and refuse to disperse. Re-enforcements just showed up and are going into the park blasting rubber bullets cause these assholes are refusing to leave. Antonio was suppose to give a speech but when he heard about the violence happening early at 4p he didn't show up. Where are all you ILLEGAL LOVERS? This is what they do to our city and yet demand to be here legally? They can't even obey our damn laws and taunt our cops. FUCKERS SHOULD ALL BE BUSED BACK TO MEXICO.
Media is reporting 10,000 yet others who saw for themselves said it was less than 5,000.

THROWN BOTTLE SPARKS CONFRONTATION DURING PROTESTS
(CBS) LOS ANGELES Violence broke out between immigration rights advocates and police officers Tuesday after a day of peaceful marching through downtown Los Angeles.
About 10,000 people waving American and Mexican flags marched from City Hall to MacArthur Park, including 1,480 Los Angeles Unified School District students. Organizers had predicted lower turnout, blaming stepped-up immigration raids, frustration that Congress hasn't passed immigration reform, and an effort by many groups to shift their focus from street mobilizations to citizenship and voter registration drives.
The violence stemmed from the throwing of a bottle at police officers, dressed in riot gear, who acted quickly to quell the disturbance.
Though fewer in number, protesters did show up in cities from Miami to Chicago to Los Angeles. But amid the waving flags, hand-painted signs and chants, many protesters' frustration was palpable.
THIS IS WHY WE NEED TO BRING ICE BACK TO RAID DOWNTOWN LA. THESE ILLEGALS OBVIOUSLY THINK THEY ARE ABOVE THE LAW AND DO WHAT THEY WANT. HOW MUCH MONEY $$$$ IS THIS COSTING THE CITY??? CEDILLO AND ANTONIO'S GIRLFRIEND ELENA DURAZO WERE THE ONLY TWO WITH THEM I SAW.
When I drove by MacArthur Park this afternoon, I thought the helicopters overhead were overkill for the number of participants, but clearly, these guys know what they're doing.
Kudos to LAPD for extinguishing this before it got out of control.
This year's May 1st parade was at its core like last year's demonstraions a triumph in the failure of Mexican socialists and radical trade unionists to hide their true colors as dyed in the wool extreme orthodox communists who worship in the direction of Habana regardless what they say in public now that China is slowly adopting capitalism.
The war is over and the illegals have lost.
Waving Mexican and South and Central American flags kills them every time.
You'd think they might learn, but, no, they are doomed by their own stridency.
