RED SPOT: You do realize that most folks in LA agree with the Mayor.

Villaraigosa agrees to mentor youth who vandalized his bus.
Article Launched:03/01/2007 07:12:47 PM PST
In the not-so-distance past, we called for stiffer penalties for taggers, those narcissistic scourges who spray their fake names all over Long Beach and other towns.
But when Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa offered this week to personally mentor the tagger who allegedly wrote graffiti on his bus during a visit to the Santee Education Complex, we stopped to think.
Is it a good idea to reward an accused tagger - one allegedly photographed in the act - with the valuable time of one of the nation's powerful mayors?
You bet it is.
Villaraigosa offered forgiveness to what appears to be a troubled youth as well as a chance to do some work that could move his life forward - clearly an unfamiliar direction to anyone accused of writing on buses. Villaraigosa changed his mind on the matter after first saying the boy deserved punishment.
Maybe Long Beach City Hall should take notice of this interesting approach. We did.
The idea of taking someone who has harmed another and giving them opportunities should remind us all that forgiveness is one of the more attractive qualities humans possess. Though the dominant religions have been telling us this for centuries, giving and receiving forgiveness just feels good.
We believe, however, that the person seeking forgiveness must prove contrition by apologizing and paying for any damages to people or property.
Villaraigosa called the tagging incident "a cry for help." Most youth crimes are.
Shadowing the mayor could go a long way in the life of this alleged offender. Of course it wouldn't be hard to find kids more deserving of such an opportunity.
There is no practical way to take every collared tagger - or straight arrow - under the government's wing. But by offering to help one kid, Villaraigosa made a statement that maybe everyone who can should consider mentoring, tutoring, advising or hiring kids kids who have made mistakes.
L.A. City Hall isn't the only building with qualified mentors.

Being once a wayward youth in search of direction, I agree in principle with the concept of Forgivness and mentoring. Look what happen in long Beach. You had those youth who went "HATE AND GANGSTA" and the judge gave them home arrest and let them go to track practice. Yet here with the "TAG SEEN AROUND L.A.". you have a mayor who will sadly exploit his mentoring role for political points. Most mentors I know of, don't get involve for the P.R.. They do it because it is the right thing to do.

Your evidence that "most folks in LA agree with the Mayor" is an article, written by a newspaper, in Long Beach?
Wow. I guess "most folks in LA" believe in Batboy, because I saw an article in a newspaper when I was in line at the grocery store the other day.
You can say that YOU agree with the Mayor, but you're not quite there with the "most folks" statement.
I, for one, think vandals and other juvenile deliquents need to be punished promptly and consistently, and that ALL the children need to be SAFE, by having plenty of police around. In short order, the children will learn that they are safe, and learn that misbehaving has consequences. Right now, all they have is anarchy, with no consequences for bad behavior.

I meant to say "written by a newspaper employee," not "written by a newspaper."

Walter,
even the students at Santee High School point out in "LITTLE DOOKIES" P.R. release, that they would rather have "HIS POLLONESS" work on the gang problem, than be a mentor. There is hope.

Can you be a mentor when your GPA works out to D+ ? (1.4) We know you can be Mayor but mentoring is serious.
