Mentoring to the "Zoner"

What depths will our Mayor, "HIS POLLONESS", go to get print, photo, or sound bite on our various media outlets ? He has try his hands at "FOOT WASHING", "CONSTRUCTION WORK", "MCing FASHION SHOWS", and "GUIDING PLANES AT PALMDALE AIRPORT". But now "HIS POLLONESS" is taking on a new challenge, "MENTORING". Yes, that is right. In light of the "TAG SEEN AROUND L.A., "HIS POLLONESS" has offer to mentor to the "TAGGER" known as "ZONER".

School Officials were not jumping at the offer, Santee Education Complex Principal, Vince Carbino, stated that "HIS POLLONESS" will have to go through the same background check that any prospective mentor would be require to complete (Will DOJ find "VILLAR" information ?). But the bigger question here is this. What type of mentoring would our mayor offer "ZONER" ? Could "ZONER" get a image makeover, courtesy of "PARKE-que". with this high power help, one could see "ZONER" become THE HOPELESS TAGGER WHO CRYS FOR HELP WERE ANSWER BY A CARING PUBLIC SERVANT WHO SAW THE SAME "ARTISIC TALENTS" THAT HE SHOWCASED IN "NORTHERN BOYLE HEIGHTS", AS A YOUTH. Yet "ZONER" has confided in district officials that he feels "HUNTED BY THE MAYOR". Doug McIntyer on his show this morning was having a blast with this story. For "ZONER'S" sake, maybe the letter of apology will suffice and the chance to bond with "HIS POLLONESS" will just be a "PAST 30 SECOND SOUND BITE".

We at the "RED SPOT INSTITUTE", in our inaugural post here at MAYOR SAM, would like your thoughts on the types of mentoring that our mayor should bestow upon "ZONER".

*** We at the "RED SPOT INSTITUTE" would like to thank "MAYOR SAM" for the opportunity to join the folks here at this blog.***

Does anyone on this blog ever do anything but pick up their L.A. Times (or occasionally the Daily News) off the driveway and begin reposting and commenting on a half dozen stories there?

The L.A. Times has a blog -- maybe this one isn't even necessary.

Isn't there anything "else" out there besides re-dishing the first 3 pages of the "California" section?

Should we assume that if it isn't in the Times, it's not news, or that the only pipeline to the real world out there that any of the bloggers have is whatever the local media pulls up.

C'mon there's more to L.A. than this?

I read the Times, too. Then I see the local talking heads on TV talk about what's in the Times, then I hear the deadheads of talk radio de-construct the exact same stories all the way into work (like they discovered it), and then click on Mayor Sam's (which used to occasionally KNOW stuff before the dailies), and it's more of the same. I could tell you what the 3-4 mains threads will be every day by what's in the Times/Daily News.

Then everyone bitches and moans that the Times is a bad newspaper (maybe it is), but what the heck would the MS blog captains (and talk radio, and local TV news) cover if it suddenly went away . . . direct-feed spin releases from City Hall?

What a vacuum!

How about showing the little artist-without-a-canvas something in the nature of a corrective lesson, that instead of painting on buses, a negative behavior that costs public agencies money, he should be accountable for his acts and be punished? (A novel idea to many.)

Too harsh maybe?

Let's try a gentler, longer-lasting life lesson that just might fit in here nicely:

The Mayor could show, using the instructional technique of "modelling" the desired behavior, that the kid should: (1.)be at his "job" so that he might get his work done- in this case, be IN the school- and,
(2.) NOT be running around the streets trying to get the public's attention by his self-promoting endeavors- here, the "tagging,"- and,
(3.) especially important, avoid being photographed while engaging in wholly unproductive activities that show you to be a narcissistic fool.

Congrats Red Spot on becoming an MS blogger! We could all learn a lesson or two from the "Institute"; redheads, gray beards and rainbow wigs included. I have no doubt that you'll do our fledgling Committee proud. Congrats again Red Spot!

Actually, Zoner can learn a great deal from Villaraigosa.

The Mayor is the ultimate tagger: he's put his face on the backs of busses, his voice on the answering machine when you dial 311, and his "photo ops" on the local news almost every night.

Coming soon, a new ABC show: "Me and the Mayor."

P.S. 10:20 -- The internet is huge. If you don't like it here, simply click elsewhere. We provide commentary. We are not reporters. Maybe you didn't catch that part.

This blog has broken lots of news the LA Times won't even touch and plenty of things before LA ANTONIA TIMES and the MOLDY GREEN SHEET print them.

10:20 apparently this blog is still interesting enough for you to analyze and comment upon. Every few weeks or so, some predictable moron comments about how MS "used to be good" blah blah.

Broken's a good word 11:28

The newspapers don't print them, because the rumors and slime posted here by sour grapes losers and liars don't hold up.

No it's really not. I come back every couple days while skimming through many blogs to see if anyone here has anything of merit to raise that hasn't already been chewed to a pulp by every other blog and media point since the previous midnight.

Forgive me for expecting better. I won't let it happen again.

And, this "moron" never said "used to be good" ... it never was good, but at least it wasn't so damned predictable as to what the no-value-added reposts from print media are going to be.

Now we have a "red spot" poster, who's M.O. is exactly the same - one paragraph repeats of the morning's newspaper headlines.

Could I be any more right?

Why is it that Mayor V would rather open a new bus stop at the back of the school than rid the neighborhood of the gang problem which results in students being mugged at gunpoint on their 2 block walk to school?

Then that would be AV's boy - Ulysses!

We all heard the bragging the other night. Uli and Trujillo sure know how to open la boca!

I think the appropriate action for zoner's behavior is to take away the writing insturments, then make them illegal, to buy, or possess.

Hey, he was such a good boy.

congrats red spot. lots of comments on your first post.

maybe the first thing he could teach the kid is how to spell 'unconstitutional' , then have the zoner tag that all over the inside of mayor's office.

10:20 and 12:20,

First you left out the "WEEKLY OF RECORD". More hard hitting stories come out in one day at the LA Weekly than in seven days at the "LA ANTONIA TIMES". Second, my "M.O." of writing regurgitated news in paragraph form. just don't confuse me with the "WWG".

Maybe the Mayor should show Zoner how to "clean our toilets" as punishment. And, as bonus punishment, the Mayor will "tag" Zoner's room with posters made from the Mayor's many photo-ops.

They need to go after the PARENTS when these kids tag. I guarantee if LAUSD made the parents pay for the cost of cleaning the grafitti on that bus that would send the message to their out of control kid. Mentoring isn't going to do shit if the kids goes back to a home environment that lets him do what he wants. Its about time PARENTS start being accountable for thier gang banger and tagging kids.

The parental responsibility is important. A lot of times this is why there is a problem in the first place. But sometimes there are not two parents in the picture at all. What's responsible? Divorces, teen pregnancies, and so on where Mom and Dad are split or never were together but for the conception.

And there's the situation where there IS no parent, like being raised by grandma. Not uncommon.

Broken homes is not even a term you hear of anymore. "Blended families" is one new term. This is the new standard. Where broken homes were a stigma 50 years ago, marriage is now less of a requirement for raising children.

But where there is not ANY control or supervision exercised in the family,of whatever makeup it is, then who's going to teach simple but important matters of morality to the Kids?

You might be amazed at how much common courtesy is missing from a lot of the low performing students; maybe from some of the "good" students, too, but very much apparentin the former.

Some simple ideas like doing things because they are the "right" thing to do are just too novel to many. But they are teachable about this and they do appreciate (most do) that somebody cares enough to show them how to be better. But this is only on a classroom by classroom basis. There is no unified policy or goal to accomplish this and reach everyone on a consistent basis.

LAUSD might get these kids up to speed on being more clear about right vs. wrong, good vs. bad and the like, and spend money on this endeavor, which could help right the ship.

Many students don't have a clue as to why a lot of what they do is wrong. It's like a norm that's been created by use over and over again. They could do the right thing if they knew there was a difference.

As to HOW to instill or teach vaalues, well, anything done will be loads more than is being done now.

Former LAUSD H.S. teacher
