. . . And They DENY Greet Dot's Charter!

You've already read how the LAUSD renewed the charter of the school that failed to meet all the standards.

Did you also know that the LAUSD refused to grant a charter to Green Dot, which already successfully operates a number of schools? The L.A. Times reported that the board did so, moreover, against the advice of counsel:

"Before the vote, a senior district lawyer and the director of L.A. Unified's charter office, Gregory McNair, repeatedly counseled the board to approve the charters. State law is clear, they said, that a school board can reject charters only if they fail to meet one of several criteria. Green Dot, the officials said, met all the criteria."

How does one explain this odd turn of events? Union money.

Look, the LAUSD is clearly a disaster, and it's not going to get fixed in the next 12 years -- i.e., the typical educational lifespan of a public school student. So let parents opt out of this insanity. Give them vouchers for private schools.

Green Dot charter should have been approved.

You may hate it but Academias charter renewal is good. The school teachings are political but it has to be monitered. Rather than have a vigilante school on the loose, its best to have authority over it.

If you have standards that you do not enforce, then you don't have standards. Why go through all the rigomarole of "evaluating" a school if the "evaluation" does not matter? It's a waste and a sham.

Get off it, Walter.

If vouchers are such a great idea, then argue for them... with data... metrics that show success...

You've complained that arguments against vouchers are just the product of "unions" -- TEACHERS, really -- and I've posted to NEA arguments against vouchers:

http://www.nea.org/vouchers/index.html

Can you give hard evidence for vouchers as a successful strategy?

If not, shut up about it already.

Why are you so afraid to give PARENTS the choice? Explain to me why YOU should be allowed to substitute YOUR judgment for theirs.

If you seriously contend that the LAUSD nightmare is better than private schools, you go tell that to parents, Skippy. I'm sure you'll convince them.

In the meantime, how interesting that, unable to justify the LAUSD, you tell those of us trying to come up with an alternative to "shut up." Perhaps someone needs remedial classes in debate and manners.

Here's the remedial class in debate, Walter:

You have to have evidence to argue successfully.

You've failed to present any evidence whatsoever that vouchers are a viable alternative.

If you won't present arguments for your position, you've lost... ipso facto.

You might just as well say "the moon is made of green cheese" as "vouchers will improve education in Los Angeles" -- if you won't provide any evidence to back up your assertion.

Both statements are meaningless without proof, silly.

You know, you're right. And that's why the Mayor and everyone else who can afford private school instead send their children to public school. That's also why private schools don't have higher rates of getting students into college. How silly of me! You have clearly proven that no one in L.A. should be given the choice of private school, for the LAUSD is obviously better than any other educational system ever conceived by man.

Poor little staffers!

You're such a coward, Walter... you won't even back up your assertions.

Because you can't, can you?

Thank you for showing your true mettle here: Your mouth writes checks that you can't cash.

Your concession is accepted. :)

Most of these comments miss the point. Steve Barr and Green Dot are embarrassing the LAUSD, with graduation, attendance, and college acceptance 5 times higher than the LAUSD. If they accept the Green Dot charter, they should all resign in disgrace, give back the money they defrauded the LAUSD by accepting paychecks as Board members, then consider ritual suicide.

No, 10:41, YOU miss the point.

If a school board member is taking cash from a school district contractor, that's the REAL story.

Tokofsky is a "consultant" for Green Dot?

What other board members harbor such conflicts of interest?

Corruption is ugly -- but that's the news I want to read.

Who's taking money from whom?

Sometimes making the right choice is really difficult, like ritual suicide. 10:41am.

But the truth is Green dot accepts parents, not students. Do you really think Admiral Brewer had no input into the denial of charters in the inner city.

Maybe he believes in improving a free and public education, foe everyone.

WALTER: A Princeton Graduate- shame. Rigomarole is spelt rigimorale.

Who are the new geniuses with the bullshit 5 times better than LAUSD.

He/she should hook up with ipso facto, or work with the ad agency that does the 5 times brighter soap bullshit. Where is real facto?
