Two views on the Bratton/Council dust-up from Daily News readers.
Bratton is right
Re "Garcetti demands Bratton apology" (July 18):
All this because Chief Bratton wants to hire men who admitted to experimenting with drugs as teens? Way to go, Chief Bratton. Experimenting with drugs as a teen should not be held against them. If they are upstanding citizens now I have no problem with them protecting and serving me.
Garcetti, Zine, and Parks want zero tolerance? We've had a president who experimented with marijuana ... although he "didn't inhale," and one who was an alcoholic. And I seem to recall a certain councilman who was caught soliciting drugs a few years ago, and who kept his position on the council for the rest of his term; thank goodness for term limits.

Amazing hubris
Re "Garcetti demands Bratton apology" (July 18):
Three cheers for Chief William Bratton, who decided to stand up to the meddling City Council. "Mind your own business" is exactly what Eric Garcetti, et al, need to hear. But boo-hoo - they want an apology.
Pulluhleese! And now these puffed-up politicians have the gall to ask voters to give them another term. What amazing hubris.

The Daily News, LA Times and numerous blogs are supporting Bratton on this issue. Those city council members came off as arrogant assholes who think they're above the law. Given the way Bratton has turned around the LAPD after Parks left it corrupt with Rampart and the officers hated him. Everyone is saying Bratton should run for office. He would win hands down any seat including the Mayor's hands down. IO say go for it.

I am going to have to come down on the side of Bratton on this one.
The fact is that the City Council didn't know what they were talking about and tried to make Bratton eat political dirt, which he kindly shoved in their faces.
Could he have been more polite? Sure but after Dennis Zines meltdown in City Council with no apology to either the farmers, or all of Los Angeles who was forced to watch his temper tantrum, I am not sure he is really in a position to say much.
The issue is simple, Brattons style, while abrasive (like most from the New York area)is effective and that is what matters, not bruised egos.
More importantly, when the City Council begins showing something other than contempt for the people they serve, maybe they will receive the respect they claim to deserve.
If you don't want Bratton firing a shot at you, how about you pick up the phone and call him instead of the Daily News?
Just a thought.

Councilman John, you are out of line here. Why should Zine apologize to the "farmers" when he took an assertive stand and took them up on their invitation to visit any time? Pay attention to the fact that Zine listens to his constituents and has been a lot more than a "reserve cop" with LAPD. Making him a target because it is popular is not a sign of creative thinking -- just pettiness. Get over yourself.

Cunningham said Rice asked him to serve as a host and he agreed because Ludlow acknowledged the mistake he made. "He is looked upon in the community, certainly among young people, as somewhat of a role model," Cunningham said. "I thought his potential for rehabilitation is great. I've seen him have a strong impact on the youth in the African-American community."
Dave Cunningham is so fucken old that he would not know what a role model for African-American youth is. Ludlow is not MY role model. I'm ashamed of him.
John Mack and Connie Rice have also lost my respect. This nigga steals money and admits it after the paper trail leads to him and he's a hero? Get the fuck outta here.
Martin ain't a real nigga cuz if he was, he would not have gotten caught. He would have been a better hustler.
Herb Wesson should know better. Karen is Martin's cheerleader so i expect her to be there and put her name. But how can she fight corruption when she was at the Coalition, and now support it?

Councilman John you are right on the money. These clowns got nailed for acting like babies and embarrassing all the media reported their antics and slammed them for it. Bratton is loved citywide because people like his abrasiveness. AT least he speaks like a true leader something this city is missing with the idiots we have in office.
Zine had the nerve to say Bratton was disrespectful. Practice what you preach moron. Zine needs anger management classes. Even the Daily News wrote an opinion about his butt. Listen at the 20 min spot how Zine starts yelling at the public. http://www.aztlan.net/zine_audio_clip.htm

Every newspaper and blogs are supporting and agreeing with Chief Bratton. Now the Daily Breeze agrees with him. Next year when Bratton is up for reappointment I say all NC's and as many people as possible jam council chambers to let these morons know that LA needs him as Chief. I can see Parks being the only idiot to say no.
WAR OF WORDS WITH L.A. POLCE CHIEF IS POINTLESS.
Some members of the Los Angeles City Council want Police Chief William Bratton to apologize for making some remarks they felt were insulting and inappropriate.
What is really inappropriate is trying to turn this dust-up over semantics into a public policy issue. It's silly.....
True, Bratton is known for blunt talk. But that's not necessarily a bad thing in a police chief. We suspect he was hired more for his administrative skills rather than his diplomatic abilities....etc. etc.

Dear 8:05 -- I was one who was cheering Zine on when he took on the squatting "farmers" and anger management classes are over-rated. You just want everything PC -- well, PC is not honest.

PC? You think? Bratton should never have to apologize to the council. They thought it was inappropriate and insulting did they? Well, if the truth hurts..
4:30 and 9:28 AM - get some sleep. The farmers aren't squatters and the only other thing Zine did for LAPD was be a traffic cop. Big fucking deal. And you're suggesting that his middle of the night visit was simply him taking the farmers up on their offer? You do NOT believe that. If that wasn't some misguided, stupid, aggressive and intimidating action on the part of that big, bald lug - then I don't know what was.
But then, that is always the problem with power hungry cops. Think back to junior high and high school and remember that one kid who was harrassed for whatever reason.. Nobody liked him, he was unpopular and everyone made fun of him. He grows up, goes to the police academy and now you better watch out because he is packing a piece and he is the LAW. He can pick up any man and make him nervous for a minute or two. Who's the big guy now? Don't even ask what they do to women. As a woman whose been pulled over numerous times and has zero violations on her record, let me tell you what they do to women. Nothing. We can cry or we can smile. Both work. Ha Ha
So let me be the first to be politically incorrect and call Zine an incompetent, rude, power trippy ex-cop who is only a councilman because he had zero competition and lives in Republican heaven. His treatment of the farmers is reflective of the district he serves. White flight and redneck are the only terms one could use to describe them.

Only blacks make excuses for their fellow man's corruption. Only blacks blame everyone except the person responsible i.e. OJ Simpson, Tookie Williams Tony Mohammed. Only blacks constantly use race as an excuse i.e. Parks against Bratton and he got nailed for even bringing race up. People should be outraged at these blacks for catering to a two time FELON Ludlow. I hope Mack is as sensitive to "white" police officers when he has to decide their fate. Ludlow hasn't paid any price. His butt should be in JAIL.
Diane Watson's spokesman, Bert Hammond, said the congresswoman has supported Ludlow in the past and she agreed when he asked for her permission to use her name on the invitation. "He admitted his guilt, paid his price and she does not believe in knocking a friend who was down, and she remains his friend," Hammond said.

We need to vote out the council members who wrote the letter against Bratton. They just proved to the city what a bunch of crybabies they are and don't have the best interest of the city at hand. IF they can put so much wasted energy in being so immature then they are not worth being in elected office.
