Zero Tolerance Hypocrisy
According to the L.A. Times, City Councilmen Bernard C. Parks, Dennis Zine and Greig Smith "indicated they plan to ask the full council to reemphasize its long-standing zero-tolerance policy for [L.A.P.D.] recruits."
"If [recruits] have voluntarily chosen to use felony illegal drugs, either they caved in to peer pressure or there is a flaw in their character makeup in which they are willing to break the law to experiment," said Smith, a reserve police officer. "These are not the kind of people we want as police officers."
No, that's not who we want at all. Instead, we want officers who will refrain from enforcing federal immigration laws. Got that, recruits? Federal drug laws: enforce and obey. Federal immigration laws: not so much.
City Councilman who aid and abet immigration law violations on a massive scale, either because they caved in to peer pressure, or because their is a flaw in their charcter -- these are not the kind of people we want in office.
Either repeal Special Order 40 or stop pretending that you're on the moral high ground when it comes to law enforcement. If you, as Councilmen, get to "pick and choose" which laws to enforce, what right do you have to hold police officers to a higher standard?

Wasn't a politician in CD whatever the FU$#% who snorted coke and still in office.
What was his name?

Walter, you are such an idiot.
Like all the other idiots out there riding on the wave of anti-immigration chest beating, you think that you can tie any problem we have in society to illegal immigrants.
Illegal immigration is a problem. But it's not EVERY problem, you retard.

What the hell are you talking about?!?! You think that L.A. City Councilmembers are posted at the borders asking dark skinned people for their IDs?
Crawl back under the rock you came from Moore!

Well what the F*** are you doing about it, you blowhard?

In reply to earlier posting: The coke-friendly councilman was Mike Hernandez, and rather that the story ending by his leaving office in disgrace, he came out smelling like a rose, taking rehab for his disease, and pulling down a healthy salary all the while. I believe that term limits ended his time, and even then, another councilman picked him up on payroll as some sort of consultant or aide.
Politicians, LA City Council included, already have one foot on the banana peel as far as them holding up any ethical or moral foundation. It would be hard to imagine them acting as Moore would like them to.
Campaign contributions usually have a way of being the quid pro quo actions with consequences that are evidenced usually in numerous and subtle ways, sometimes in more visible when they get sloppy.
Nice to see that goodwill still abounds among blog posters.

What am I doing about it? Well, I recently took an eight-month sabbatical from my job, without pay, to run for public office. I think that pretty much qualifies as a good faith effort to improve the world. What have you done to help our city?
As for the author of the statement that "illegal immigration [is not] every problem," you'll want to look in your "Logic & Rhetoric For Dummies" under "Straw Man." And I say that with no disrespect to Dummies, or to the Books for Dummies series.

I would agree with you Walter, but is it up to our local politicians to enforce the border?
What city laws (or even state policies) are they telling the local police not to enforce?
Besides that, though, I'd prefer to have a cop who's honest about their past and has actually experienced life than a rigid dick on an ethical power trip as a cop.

Holy fucking shit, you really think you are the resurrection and the light, don't you? Praise be to Allah, Wacko ran for office and we are not worthy. By the way, you loathsome LA voters, thank the lord for the hundreds of candidates who blessed us with their civic rightousness by running all for governor in 2003.
"These are not the kind of people we want in office."
But these are the people we elect, year in and year out, and their anointed successors. We do want these people in office, otherwise we would have elected your sorry ass.

To 9:43: Is it up to our local politicians "to enforce the border?" That's another straw man. No, it's not up to them to "enforce the border." However, it likewise is not up to them, in my opinion, to undermine federal law enforcement by directing our police officers to refrain from investigating and reporting illegal aliens when they encounter same.
Having themselves transformed L.A. into a "sanctuary city" for one class of law-breakers, they can hardly complain about recruits who "experimented with mind-altering drugs," as it was known in the 1960's. Simply put, the Three Amigos' credo is: "Do as I say, not as I do."

What LA City council needs is a no bullshit politician like late mayor of Philadelphia - Frank Rizzo.
As police commissioner, Frank made Darryl Gates look like as a pansy, as mayor he was infinitely better than Villarbabosa.

Best mayor in California in last 25 years - Brian Bilbray - he used a bulldozer to dam the Tijuana River to back up untreated sewage from Mexico and for few days surfing in Imperial Beach was fun again.

In Greig Smith's world, noone can make a mistake. He is perfect... or just never got caught.
What an asshole.

Mike Hernandez in CD 1. Ed Reyes was his chief of staff.
Many politicians do lots of drugs. Character flaw? Please. It means they cave in to peer pressure? Please.
What were you three - the biggest geeks in your school. Forget it, don't answer. We can guess.
I'd rather have a cop who has lived a nornal life before becoming a cop. They're more normal. Maybe they won't be so tough talking, piece packing, red neck, macho wannabe losers if LAPD could accept normal people. And normal people have tried drugs. Sorry guys.
You're making me want to research your backgrounds thoroughly to make sure you don't have anything in there that would make us feel the three of you were unworthy. All three men of perfection.. ha ha ha. Right..

1. "Immigrant Sweep Snares 36 molesters." There is a crackdown now happening that if illegals are arrested for committing crimes they will be deported.
2. Parks is a hypocrite. Mike Hernandez was caught on video soliciting a prostitute and using cocaine is on his staff. He should have been arrested and jailed. Its ok for his staff to use hard core drugs and no consequences.
The Daily News states it best.
Lowered standards
LAPD's loosened rule on drug use by recruits makes sense
IT'S not easy to become a Los Angeles Police Department officer. Applicants must go through a battery of physical and academic tests, a lie-detector exam, psychological and medical screenings and a background check. After that rigorous perusal, there are eight months in the police academy, where applicants are further weeded out under the watchful eyes of instructors and classmates.
Even under the best of circumstances, the LAPD works hard to fill academy classes. And that's why the proposal made by Councilman Bernard Parks and supported by Councilman Dennis Zine - both former LAPD officers - to rescind a deliberate loosening of the policy on past drug usage by recruits is a bad idea. The zero-tolerance proposal would be overly restrictive on a department in desperate need of hundreds of new officers. Parks and Zine are both proud vets who no doubt seek excellence in the department. But they also both joined the force in a very different era when drug usage was rare among youngsters - at least, outside of Berkeley.
The suggestion implicit in Parks' motion to return to a zero-tolerance policy - that the LAPD's many tests might still allow crackheads onto the force - is simply ludicrous.
That hasn't happened in the two years since the LAPD relaxed its standards - which are, by the way, still STRICTER THAN FBI'S. And it's unlikely to happen at all.
Considering that an estimated 40 percent of people ages 18 to 25 have reported using illicit drugs other than marijuana at least once, it would be unworkable.
While no one wants drugged-out officers in charge of the community's public safety, it seems overly harsh to rule out an otherwise perfect candidate for a youthful indiscretion. These days, Americans even forgive their presidents for that.
We all want the LAPD to be as good as it can be. But, contrary to its intent, Parks' proposal won't help.

I volunteer at a city-run senior center, I organize community cleanups in mine and adjacent block clubs, and I am captain of my neighborhood watch.
You really believe that you running for mayor improved the City of Los Angeles? Like someone asked, what have you been smoking?
And what's the deal with you admiring your own ass?!?

you know, as an ex-LAPD officer I recall working one time and responded to an unknown problem call possible fire in building. I got there and observed that there was no fire. As I walked up to the house (located in Newton division), a young lady walked out and I asked her if there was any problem. she advised me that she was just visiting and that the person who called the police was inside. when my partner and I turned to look at the doorway, the young lady saw a window of opportunity and got a jump start and ran like hell. I knew something was up and proceeded to investigate the interior of the house. As I entered the house it appeared abandoned and run down. with guns drawn we searched the first room going into the house and observed that the small room say about 20'x15' was occupied by approx 30 people, all "mojados." I knew then and there what the problem was. when I cancelled the fire department and responding units over the air I did what the LAPD manual always says to do. I asked everyone in that room if there was anyone reporting a crime...no one responded. I then asked if there were anyone that wanted to make a complaint about our service...no one responded. then I asked if anyone had any questions about what just occured...no on responded (all this in spanish) finally seeing that it was a bogus call, no victims of a crime and no way with out SINGLiNG out a criminal with profiling, I walked away and got into the patrol car. To my dismay I observed 30 male and female hispanics doing to 100 yd dash onto the street and heading for either Central ave or Hooper street. As I saw this the radio blared out, 415 man with a gun at MLK and main, shooting just occurd. Upon arrival we had gotten there and arrested a gang member for gun possesion. moral of the story, there are more things the LAPD can do than handle wetback calls. what the hell do we have border patrol and immigration for. let the feds handle their shit. simple as that.

If you or anyone opposing illegal immigration decides to run next time, the election will be yours to lose. The sleeping giant in LA has been awakened and the majority of this city's legitimate citizens will vote for ANYONE WHO WILL ENFORCE THE EXISTING IMMIGRATION LAWS. All you have to do is repeal Special Order 40 and stop all of the billions of dollars going to the illegal population of this city. Remove the sanctuary status of LA.
Any election from now on will have only one platform....illegal immigration. LA saw what happened to Prop 82, and this is only the beginning. The voters overwhelmingly voted for Prop 187 ten years ago, but a fascist, liberal judge overruled the wishes of the people. And Gray Davis didn't have the balls to appeal the decision. I guarantee you things would be different today if LA was given a chance to fight that decision.
Illegal immigration is the root of ALL evil in this city and across the nation. Stop the Mexican mafia in City Hall and Sacramento.
