Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Tuesday
As anti-illegal immigration reforms wind their way through Congress, protests of the measures continue locally. Today, nearly 36,000 students walked out of class, including, the dumb stunt of walking onto local freeways. Realizing that students need to be in class and not protesting, Los Angeles leaders have ordered a lockdown of local schools and will begin to expel and suspend students involved in the protest. Of course, its also important to note that when students leave class to protest - even for a favorite liberal cause - schools lose their "Average Daily Attendance" money.
Here are some goodies for you on our blogs: video from the roast of Mayor Villaraigosa, an Ode to Jan Perry, and the latest edition of the Transit Coalition's newsletter.
While students and others are protesting in large numbers in LA, conservative Christians are not really allowed to protest what they think in San Francisco. The Local Liberty Blog reports that the Board of Supervisors has passed resolutions condemning the religious views of these folks. You might twist it as these folks' views are abhorent - and they may or may not be - but is any other religion facing official government condemnation?
Are you a fan of the local blog Martini Republic? There's not another site on the internet that so easily blends national & local politics, sports, music, the arts and cocktails so well. Unlike the rest of us mercenary bloggers, MR doesn't carry any advertising - no Google, no BlogAds, nothing. Despite this, the blog has ongoing costs that need to be paid, so if you enjoy the writings of folks like Sister City contributor Joseph Mailander, Alex, Donna Lee, Dr. Cocktail and the rest, there is a way you can support them - buy one of Joe's books online. You can visit Joe's publishing company, St. Genevieve Press by clicking here.
Mayor Villaraigosa will spend time Tuesday delivering meals to homebound seniors as part of the "March for Meals" event.
West LA Online is reporting that Westfield Group is considering a plan to remake the Century City Mall to include both retail and high end condos. Its a good idea if done right. Given the housing crunch in LA, going up and mixed-use is one way we can provide more units of housing, since sprawl is pretty much out of the question (unless you want to live on one of the local freeways).
Michael Williams of the Master of None blog highlights a Washington Post article by Joy Jones who was told by a young African American student in her class, "Marriage is for white people." Interesting reading.

For those of you anti-immigrant, xenophobic whites, and blacks, who are utterly confused and taken aback by the passion being displayed by pro-immigrant forces, just consider this. The last human beings ever to be considered illegal in this nation were escaped slaves. Get it? The vast majority of those kids marching are citizens, born and raised in this country. They are marching for their parents, who they see "slaving" away, 12 to 14 hours a day for a pittance. Do you think that won't chap your hide? If your parents were considered slaves, wouldn't you be out there too?

Listen up, dumbo: Unrestricted immigration will just force their folks to work harder. A cheaper gardener is on his way from Mexico. Why do you think Senator Kennedy and the unions back immigration reform?

Ludlow expected to plead guilty again...Federal court venue for today...LA Daily News
Former City Councilman Martin Ludlow, whose legal troubles drove him to step down last month as the county's top labor official, is set to plead guilty today to a federal charge stemming from his 2003 campaign...Ludlow pleaded guilty in state Superior Court to a related felony charge of violating campaign laws...federal charge earlier this month, they also reported that Ludlow had agreed to plead guilty of conspiring to break labor laws. After an initial appearance Monday, Ludlow's lawyer, John Vandevelde, said the agreement remains in effect.
"He'll plead guilty to that one count," he said.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig Missakian said outside court that the deal depends on Ludlow's cooperation.

You're calling me a dumbo. What's the matter, the truth hurt? This is "corporate" America. I'm sure you own stock in some corporation. If that cheap labor doesn't come in, do you think the jobs will stay here. No. They're already on their way to India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Tawain, etc.,. Every job in this country - be it illegal or not - spawns other jobs. The working seamstress buying diapers for her two dozen kids (as you see it). The telemarketer buying his kids soccer cleats. The assembly line worker buying groceries. Do you think that worker in Singapore working for an American corporation is keeping your 7/11 down your street in business?
And don't worry, most of these "exploited" immigrant workers are part of the new Latino business owner wave hitting the southland. Imagine how successful their businesses will be since they are already used to all that hard work. Once these immigrants take the next step towards their "American" dream, there will be more cheap labor to fill their positions. Such is a free market system. Don't like it, I here Cuba doesn't have an immigration problem - go there.

anon 6:26. They wouldn't be "slaves" if they were back in their birth countries. Their migration here was a CHOICE. They were not forced to come here and they are not being held here against their will. Your supposed argument is baseless, simple-minded, and wrong. Don't compare illegal immigrants to escaped slaves for sympathy points. What's next - you want to compare them to Holocaust victims? Rape victims? The idiocy of you illegal alien supporters is really unnerving.

Overall ILLEGAL immigration is a net drag on society. Amnesty didn't work in 1986, and it won't work now.
Wash. Times 8-26-04:
U.S. households headed by illegal aliens used $26.3 billion in government services during 2002 but paid only $16 billion in taxes, an annual cost to taxpayers of $10 billion, says a report issued yesterday by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS).
The report, based on U.S. Census Bureau data, also said if illegal aliens now in the country -- estimated at between 8 million and 12 million -- received amnesty, paid taxes and used services similar to households headed by legal immigrants, the estimated net deficit would increase from $10 billion to more than $29 billion.

If the term "slave" insults you so much, maybe the term "serf" will do you better. Why the hangup on slaves, did your family own some at one time. Judging from your elitist, mightier than thou attitude, you should take a liking to the term serf. I'm sure you long for those days of fiefdoms in Europe were serfs were the property of their Lords.
As for these people choosing to come here - the choice was made for them. The choice was made by United Fruit Company who displaced hundred of thousands of indigenous people then put them to work on their plantations. Think about that next time you bite into your Chiquita Banana. The choice was made for them by the Reagen administration who illegally funded counter revolutionary forces throughout central America. The choice was made for them by over 150 years of American imperialism in the guise of America foregin policy.
As for comparing them to the Holocaust, have you ever seen the documentary "Hidden Holocaust." Since 1492 over 100 million indigenous souls have perished due to white influence. As for Jews, who do you think bankrolled the plundering of the Americas.
The numbers are too much, and they keep growing. Face it, this isn't your land anymore. Like George H.W. Bush, I hope you like your "little brown ones." That is Gods' cruel sense of humor, having a little Mexican kid callilng you Grandpa. Ha, ha, ha.

Wow, 10:50. What wasted energy you've just expended. If you had any reading comprehension skills whatsoever, you would figure that the term slave or serf or whatever you want to come up with is an inaccurate analogy. ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS CHOOSE TO COME TO THE U.S.! We even keep telling them to go back. Slaves, serfs, Holocaust victims, rape victims, etc. don't/didn't choose their fate.
Illegal aliens willingly come here then have the nerve to tell us what to do with our laws. They claim pride in a country they "escape" from and choose not to return to, AND seem terrified of the thought of having to return to.
Regarding you blaming the Jews, the U.S., and imperialism for the state of Central and South America, get real. You think the corrupt governments and violent uneducated citizens have anything to do with it?
Numbers growing? Sure, until immigration reform passes. That's the truth that you're scared of. That's why kids are running onto freeways with Mexican flags.
p.s. My children have all married well, thank you.

Its not fair to scapegoat immigrants. But...isnt it also unfair that immigrants from other countries do not seem to count as much as mexican immigrants? Every legal spot that is taken by a Mexican is one less for the Chinese, African, European immigrant, who in many cases has it alot worse than the Mexican immigrant. Think of Sudanese refugees, or Tibetan immigrants. My point is that it doesnt seem fair that because we share a border with Mexico that all the immigrants allowed legally into this country will overwhelmingly come from mexico and Latin America.
Thoughts?

You are correct!
2004 Immigration stats show 1 million legal immigrants entering the US, including those from Mexico. For every applicant that made the legal transition, which takes and average of 6 years, there are estimated 9 more waiting their legal turn. Unfortunately by putting the reportedly 12 million illegals now here ahead of them, even with a 6 year wait (sound familiar) while remaining in the US is a direct slap in the face of this country's values of freedom and fairness in the process. If passed in present form, do you think Mexico will allow open immigration from Asia, the former Soviet Union block, Africa and others so they too can have the same opportunity Mexican and Central America "undocumented migrants" are going to be given?
Will guest workers be allowed in from countries other than Mexico? As for the premise that only Mexican immigrants work hard, there are many immigrants from many other nations and cultures that work hard and long to make a better life not for them but the next generation. As for the students who don't want to be in school, they should get the most out of their education no matter which system they are in. Get a college degree, and get a good paying job. They can then make sure that their parents can retire from these low pay jobs and enjoy life with their grandchildren. But if you don't think education is important enough, then you must not really mind working your parents way past their prime.
My mother was a seamstress on Ward street for over twenty years. I got a public education, a college degree and a good job. She hasn't had to work for twenty years now, and enjoys time with her grandchildren who now attend state universities.
So don't talk about how hard your parents have to work.
You do something about it.
Don't expect immigration laws to fix it.

This bill hr4437 is wrong.
What is also wrong are students waving Mexican flags. What the HELL are they learning at LAUSD schools?
If these kids love Mexico so much, go back home and take your parents with you.
