That was a heck of a protest in LA on Saturday. What do you say to the anti-illegal immigration crowd like Hal Netkin, Walter Moore, etc. when their protests maybe turn out hundreds and here we had a half a million opposed to the very argument these old white guys are making? These protests are going to have significant impact on the illegal immigration debate with liberals feeling newly empowered and Republicans like George Bush skittish of pulling a Pete Wilson with Hispanic voters. Still, the problem has to be addressed one way or another. Rudy Carrasco at the Urban On-Ramps blog makes the case that the only answer to the illegal immigration issue is employer sanctions, as well, his readers make some interesting comments as well.With Monday being Caesar Chavez Day, more protests are expected. State and Los Angeles city offices are closed, but LA County offices are open and the LA Unified School District will be in session. School police will be deployed should more protests boil over.
The California Democratic Council, a statewide association of Democratic Clubs and County Committees overwhelmingly endorsed Jerry Brown for Attorney General following a head-to-head debate at the Santa Clara Convention Center with Rocky Delgadillo, the other democratic primary candidate. On Friday, Brown also picked up the endorsement of the Sierra Club and The Alameda County Democratic Lawyers Club.
The rough and tumble free speech of internet bulletin board Craig's List may have put the site in violation of federal anti-housing discrimination laws. The LA Times reports that a lawsuit claims a number of ads posted for housing opportunities are worded in ways that create real or perceived instances of housing discrimination. However, Craig's List could have an out. The Communications Decency Act protects speech posted by users on internet sites. Websites use this law many times in suits against them, and at least one housing discrimination case was succesfully fought under the terms of the CDA.
The Daily News covers the battle for the 20th State Senate Democratic nod in the San Fernando Valley. The best quote comes from Assembly Member Cindy Montanez who says of her opponent Councilman Alex Padilla, "The only thing we have in common is our age." Montanez says that Padilla should finish his Council term before running for another office.
Councilman Bernard Parks is headed to Florida to lobby NFL owners to place a professional football team in a rennovated Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Jerry Brown's such an embarassment. He thinks he still has a chance to win despite the ongoing criminal investigation into reported vandalism and racist comments at a bar in Oakland earlier this month.
500,000...1,000,000..doesn't really matter since CA votes dem anyway. Now if this protest were in Ohio and the same number came out, that would be a statement! But the electeds would vote the same way with or without the protest here in SoCal. I believe Saturday's action says nothing in the long run. Actually, having a small crowd would have said more than the 500,000 that did show up.
LOL. I guarantee you could get MILLIONS of people fed up with illegal immigration to protest at the voting booth! Those illegals march because they can't vote.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa reported last week that he returned a $1,000 contribution to lobbyist Arnie Berghoff - money that had been donated to his officeholder account, used to defray the incidental costs of being an elected official.--
Berghoff is the chief lobbyist for BFI which owns Sunshine Canyon Landfill in Granada Hills...
Villaraigosa opposing it during last year's mayoral campaign, then saying the city couldn't afford to go elsewhere, and now backing a deal to divert some trash from the landfill and advance the city's recycling effort.---But what makes Villaraigosa's refund particularly ironic is that it also comes a week after the mayor was honored at the annual political roast for diabetes - which Berghoff founded.

All the money from the Roast goes to the ADA and isn't used as a way to gain access to politicians. People like Berghoff and Englander don't need the Roast to speak with Antonio or anyone else.

Both Democrats and Republicans are starting to realize that the Latino vote is not the bloc they each want it to be. There is no consistent pattern of voting in the Latino community and they are split on many issues. Trying to appeal to "the latino voter" is useless because that prototype does not exist. To top that off, nationally they are less than 9% of voters. White voters still rule what happens nationally and will continue to do so for years to come. Politicians realize that; that's why immigration reform is moving ahead. La fiesta is over. The Sleeping Giant is an urban legend.
Understand, many marched solely against Bill HR 4437. I marched against this bill, not for any other reason who many did have.
I am against Amnesty, against open borders, against illegal crossings.
But this Bill is inhumane! How can I as a christian support an inhumane and racist bill. This would lead America as a land of hypocrasy. We tell are against Human Rights Violations, but we want to pass a bill that does the same?

I hope the pols in DC ignore the nonsense (i.e. protest for ILLEGAL immigration) in LA yesterday--unless they want race riots and tensions in their schools too. A recent NBC/WSJ poll showed 71% are more likely to vote for a candidate for Congress who favors tighter controls on illegal immigration. If Kennedy wants illegals, build housing projects in Hyannis Port.

Would illegal immigrants from Mexico and South America protest if the guest worker program brought in a greater percentage of people from Africa, Asia, and Europe?
The current immigration policy (do-nothing) is racist in that it favors people from south of the border who can easily cross from Mexico (whose government doesn't allow illegal immigrants there).
I'd like to see a greater amount of diversity in Southern California... don't you think we could bring in some Asian roofers?
Oh wait.. the Asians already have leapfrogged those hard-working Mexicans in the economic totum pole.
What the illegals don't realize is that if a worker plan is implemented, new illegals will still come across and they won't gain any benefit other than having to pay taxes like the rest of us.
Strict enforcement like everyone wants will never work as long as (1) businesses can make $$$ selling products to illegals, and (2) busincesses can make $$$ by paying peanuts to illegals.
I'd put a 5% tax on all wire transfers to Mexico and Canada, a tax on carne asada burritos sold at roadside stands and a surcharge on Gordon Lightfoot records.
Because immigrants from Canada and Mexico have an advantage, they should fund the travel costs of illegal aliens from Asia, African and Europe.

There are many Latinos here in LA that are sick and tired of the illegals crowding the schools and having hospitals closed. They have an arrogant attitude as if they DESERVE THE SAME RIGHTS AS CITIZENS. LOOK AT THE IDIOT STUDENTS TODAY WALKING OUT. THEY ARE EMBARRASSING ALL OF US AND ARE COMMITTING ACTS OF VIOLENCE. THEY ARE GOING TO RUIN THE MESSAGE WITH THEIR IMMATURITY. Of course Antonio had to take advantage of the photo op and had some of them in city hall and asked the cameras to go along. WHAT A LOSER OF A MAYOR WE HAVE. IF HE WOULD HAVE TAKEN CARE OF THE ILLEGAL VENDORS WHEN HE WAS CM THEY WOULDN'T BE SO OUT OF CONTROL.
Most Hispanics who work in the private sector don't feel this way. They don't tolerate racism, but they don't see illegal reform as racism. Most of these guys went to USC and now they're driving BMers and getting the hell out of the hood, as is the American way. Individual Disciplined for Altering an Account Statement
Juan-Carlos Lacey of Los Angeles, California, a former registered representative, consented without admitting or denying guilt to findings that he engaged in conduct inconsistent with just and equitable principles of trade in that, among other violations, he altered an account statement.
An NYSE hearing panel found that in or about April 2001, in connection with an application for a personal loan, Lacey completed a portion of, and signed an approval signature of a fictitious firm manager on, a verification of deposit form and altered an account statement for an account he maintained at the firm so it would appear the account had a higher balance.
The NYSE imposed a penalty of a censure and three-year bar. Lacey consented to the penalty.
