Immigration Protests Continue
Thousands of students are pouring out of class to resist pending federal legistlation designed to curb various aspects of illegal immigration. High schools all over Southern California report children leaving class. One young activist told students to educate themselves on the matter before walking out, if you're just doing it to ditch, save yourself the embarrassment. Still, having once been a teenager who walked out of class myself a few times, I know a good chunk of kids are just along for the ride.In other news, a select group of student leaders were granted audiences with Mayor Villaraigosa and Lt. Governor Bustamante.
Summer is not too far off. It will be interesting to see if the protests peter out before then, or if we have a repeat of 1968.

These students are an example of illegals breaking the law. They stopped traffic by walking on the 110 FWY. What morons would do that??? Who are the organizers of these kids. There's reports of looting in South LA, cars being attacked while the students were walking in the middle of the streets. If they can't even obey the laws now they should all be put on a bus and taken back to Mexico.
I haven't been able to confirm a thing, but I've heard of some students in some very unusual places today, from cellphone drivers. One of those calls was from the Hollywood Freeway...
But what I was eyewitness to: I saw students marching to and from John Marshall this morning. A group of about forty, all in white shirts, males and females, came by my home shouting "Viva Mexico" and then when they saw other students at the bottom of the hill they ran down to them. When they all assembled at Tracy and St. George, they marched southeast on Tracy. I think they were walking downtown.
Of course, this being a liberal enclave, myself and many of my neighbors stood on our lawns applauding them, cheering them on as though they were marathoners.

JUST REPORTED THE SENATE PASSED THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION BILL
These kids are lucky to get a free education in the first place. For them to walk out of class is a big slap in the face of the taxpayers who are paying for their education.
The worst part is the LAUSD seemingly condones this, no wonder it is such a horrible school district.
I used to be liberal but this is one issue that has made me more conservative. The sense of entitlement these kids have is astonishing. Their hackneyed political views are worse. What purpose is served by waving the Mexican flag or accusing citizens who want immigration reform of being racists? Why do they allude to “taking our land”? Whose land? Spain’s? The Aztecs’? The Asians that migrated over the Bering Strait? This type of provincialism is the cause of racial tensions. Ironically, liberals cheer them on even though they know these kids have no clue about the larger picture. Instead of looking at the social, legal, and economic consequences of this problem, they’re interpreting immigration reform as a personal attack. These “protests” have strengthened my view of the need for such reform.
And before any bleeding hearts try to pass maudlin stories about the noble migrant, hey I’m hardworking too. Do I get to ignore certain laws just because I’m hardworking and want a better life? Can I choose not to pay taxes? Why can’t I drive without a license or insurance? I’m only trying to get to work. Heck, even hookers and drug dealers work hard too. Why don’t we let them slide? Where are the sympathy and protests for all the hardworking citizens who want a break?
Over 1500 students peacefully marched in the San Fernando Valley today, coming together from at least seven different high schools. They were not just ditching for ditching's sake - they stayed together, waving flags, holding signs and marching together in unity. A good number converged in the courtyard of the Martin Braude building. Speaking to the students, they all have a personal story as to why this is an important issue to them. They're not just along for the ride - the ones I spoke to believed in what they are doing. And, again, they were peaceful. There was a strong police presence - but they remained calm and behaved. Kudos for the students choosing to be involved in something they will remember for years to come. This is peaceful democracy in action.

Do you think waving a flag and "supporting the troops" makes you a patriot? Take a look back at the history of this country, and you'll see how we have prospered by investing in people. No, ubrayj02, most people don't have a problem with legal immigration, but have a serious problem with illegal immigration. In fact, if business interests were serious about the so-called shortage of willing workers they would have pushed for increased legal immigration a long time ago. Problem is, they know legal immigrants are not as exploitable as the illegals. I actually support increased legal immigration. However I am appalled at these illegal immigrants who denigrate Americans and make demands that we support and accomodate them, especially when they have greater loyalty to another country - a country that doesn't provide them any opportunity and actually treats its poor more horribly than America ever could. If they truly consider themselves people who "play by the rules" they would return to their home countries, apply for US citizenship legally, and try to fight for increased legal US emigration for others. This sense of entitlement they have is unfounded. I'm contacting my representatives to demand reform.
Opposing ILLEGAL immigration is NOT the same as opposing immigration, not even close. I support people immigrating into our country legally.
People who want to move here need to show that they are healthy; that they have the financial wherewithal to avoid becoming a burden on taxpayers; that they are not criminals; and that they will learn English and support our country.
There is no legitimate reason to let people from Mexico "cut in line" ahead of the millions who would love to move here LEGALLY from Africa, Korea, and even from Mexico!
Looks like the House will have to cool the passions of the Senate, or at least the Senate Judiciary Committee's amnesty plan -- and that self-righteous bloated buffoon Kennedy.
I really hope this causes a backlash and the VAST majority of Americans who do not support illegal immigration send a message to their elected officals.

The protests have shown that the Sleeping Giant has been awakened, and it is beautiful to see such unity, in a peaceful manner. When we are attacked, history has shown, (Prop 187), more Latinos have become citizens and registered to vote, therefore, further giving the electoral power to the Democratic party vs. the Republican one. So as much as many are against immigration, or the children of immigrants taking over "American jobs," there is power in numbers and in education.

There are many Latinos that were insulted and embarrassed by these students today. 5 were arrested in Van Nuys, and in Santa Ana you can see the students throwing bottles at the police. They arrogantly walked onto the fwy breaking the law. Antonio came out twice and told them to go back to school and they booed. He finally had a press conf. he was sooooo pissed. These kids today had absoutely no respect for the law going up aggressivlely to cars and waving Mexican flags. Shame on them!! I'm sure their parents are disappointed. There are two issues here at stake with illegal immigration.
1) Border security - You've got to be off your rocker if you don't think we need secure borders. Egyptians have been caught crossing into the U.S. from Mexico, etc. If we are serious about illegal immigration, it starts here.
2) Employment - On one hand these folks are taking jobs many Americans are too proud to do on the other we also have folks who buy in the sense of entitlement or join gangs instead of working and building a better life. I don't buy this legal vs. illegal stuff as much as others. Jews sought asylum here in the 1930s and turning them away does not make it right. We need to find a just and humane way of dealing with the population that came here and wants to STAY here. Marching with a Mexican flag does not move me as much as an illegal immigrant with a U.S. Flag. They want to be Americans and are willing to work to do it. Even if they snuck in here (the equivalent of jaywalking), they DO pay taxes and own homes etc.
If we can secure our borders (Mexico has militarized its southern border already) we don't need to worry about new influxes and we can deal with integrating what we have and removing the unsavory elements, where necessary.
Can We ask you bloggers to go talk to one of these students?

Do you really think the Democrats are serving Latinos better than Republicans?
Republicans might have you pissed off on the immigration issue, but remember, its only those Republicans who need redneck votes. Even their leader, George Bush, is not on their side and is back Latinos.
When you put aside the immigration issue, Republicans are more in line with Latinos than the Democrats.
1. Choosing life - Latinos are pro-life overwhelmingly but Democrats who claim to speak for us are in favor of abortion on demand.
2. The family - No one is more pro-family than Latinos and the Republicans are more in line with us here. Democrats support re-defining marriage by allowing gays to marry and adopt children. We as Latinos stand for traditional values.
3. Church and God - We value our religion and the church is very important in our lives. Democrats wish to remove religion, outlaw Christianity. Remember, it was the Democrats not the Republicans who removed our heritage of the Cross from the county seal.
4. Hard work - We as Latinos have always worked hard for our families, even if we have to work 3-4 jobs. Democrats want us to be lazy and go on welfare and become a dependent class as they did to blacks who were once very prosperous in America before the Democrats took over.
When you look at the Democrats they support values not consistent with Latino life -sexual peversion, not respecting human life, laziness, government handouts, etc.
We need to educate and work with the Republicans on immigration because the other issues are too important to trust the Democrats.
Anonymous - you claim Latinos are "pro-family"? Really? What is so "Pro-family" about having 5 kids under the age of 5 when you can't even afford one? What is pro-family about an 8-months pregnant woman crossing the desert in 120 degree heat so she can assure herself an American citizen which increases her chances of staying her - but who cares what it does to her unborn child. Only one problem with your premise, this was never Russia. And the California State Constitution was written in Spanish. Again, look at your history - look at the history of this land. Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs is in a language group called Uto-Aztecan languages. The Shoshoni - natives to this land, speak a dialect of Nahuatl. The land, the people, the language - that is what defines us. We didn't cross any borders, the borders crossed us.

those students ruined the message that was sent on Saturday. They just showed people Nation wide because the tv coverage was on all the cable stations, CNN, MSNBC etc. They didn't even listen to Antonio when he told them to go back to school.
