The Mayor bottlecaps some LAUSD success
With the Mayor backing Monica Garcia and the UTLA Chris Arellano, the battlelines are distinctly drawn in the LAUSD board race. Insert into the mix yesterday's speculation surrounding Ms. Goldberg (who supports Arellano).
Today, the Daily News tells you about something that's actually working in the LAUSD: an after-school program that's contributing towards decreasing the dropout rate. And the paper sends out no less than its City Hall ace, Rick Orlov, to button down the story.
This is a program that's been around sixteen years. The Mayor, who hasn't been around for sixteen months, gets to bottlecap it with a timely study to be released today:
The attempt to conflate the success of this program with the the Mayor's office is an intriguing turn in the race.

Students in the 16-year-old program - called Los Angeles' Better Educated Students for Tomorrow, or LA's BEST - were one-fifth more likely to remain in school through 12th grade, as well as to show improved social skills and interaction with parents, according to an analysis for the National Center for Research on Evaluations, Standards and Student Testing.
"It was notable that the students who attended the after-school program for three years were far less likely to drop out of school than those who did not participate in the program," researcher Denise Huang said.

Huang's findings are scheduled to be publicly released today by Villaraigosa and billionaire philanthropist Eli Broad, who has donated $2 million this year to LA's BEST.

Gee, Hahn was the one who expanded the LA'Best program and Antonio had absolutely nothing to do with it or its success. Watch him take credit like he always does for other people's work. What has Antonio done in the last months expect tout LAUSD takeover, been at every photo op possible, pls someone tell us what has HE DONE???/
This is silly. The reason these students do better is not the program. Their parents are more concerned about their educations--that's why the parents get them into the after school program in the first place. The study measures something, but NOT the effectiveness of the program. The effectiveness of the program can only be measured in comparison to another program. Duh.
Hmmmmm.....I think there's something fishy about Chris Arellano.....he looks really creepy.
If Goldberg backs Arrellano, then who does Fabian Nunez back? Someone (either Gasca or Arrelano) should be lobbying him right now. Would Nunez support Villaraigosa's pick?
(Fabian Nunez, the current speaker of the State Assembly, is backing Kevin DeLeon in the 45th Assmebly District race against Elena Popp (backed by Jackie Goldberg) and Christine Chavez. Chris Arrelano and Enrique Gasca both dropped out of that race to enter the LAUSD 2nd District School Board race. Goldberg's endorsement is seen as a favor (to Arrelano) for getting the heck out of the way in a democratic party favorite vs. an incumbent's choice vs. a dark horse race for the 45th AD).

We can always count on you to be uninformed. Nunez already endorsed the 500 pound gorilla known as Monica Garcia.

Mayor endorses Huizar's ex-aide
I think the only question at this point is whether Monica can get 50% in the primary. The Boyle Heights Machine is humming. The UTLA looks a little flatfooted right now, like they were caught by surprise.
Indicative of how much it's humming is that Times article itself. That's a really bad choice by Cynthia Cho, to generate virtual brochureware for Garcia and to subordinate everyone else as an "also ran." But it's also in part the other campaign's faults for not getting in the right faces at the right time.

You belong in the same league as Ubray. Listen to the insiders and those who work or have worked at the District and they will tell you that Monica does not inspire hope, loyalty or competence.
You might want to look at today's LA Weekly to see how unimpressive and unprepared Monica is. She can't even formulate a cogent response to why she supports or opposes a mayoral take over of the LAUSD.
It seems like Goldberg really hasn't done her homework....You should take a closer look at Arellano.

less than two months of campaigning and Monica has already changed her mind on the takeover in order to get access to Broad and Riordan money.

You might want to look at today's LA Weekly to see how unimpressive and unprepared Monica is.
I've met both her and Arellano, I already have my own feelings about both. But it sounds like you're disappointed to hear that I think Monica is leading this race right now. Sir or Madam, being unimpressive and unprepared has nothing to do with ability to get votes out.
Also, nobody really comes out like a winner in the Weekly article, not nearly to the degree that Cho slanted her Times article, anyway. The Weekly's fairly neutral; and now Antonio gets LAUSD brownie points from the DN. On balance, things are rolling for the Mayor's candidate.
Finances are already an issue at LAUSD. Now if Monica wins there goes a fortune just to reinforce her chair so she dosn'r break it. LAUSD can't afford to be replacing furniture this bis women will break. It maybe cheaper to send her to Lindora or for a gastric bypass. Take your lead from Yolanda Fuentes from Public Works she looks great!! Damn Monica you're not even inspirational on the diet front.

I find the immature, juvenile, classless comments to be extremely in poor taste. Obviously some adults who post here were brought up by horrible parents who didn't teach them good manners or how to debate the issues without resorting to bully tactics attacking personally someone's physical appearance. I wonder if Monica Garcia was one of your sisters, mothers, relatives etc would you be so cruel? Yes, I'm sure all you men and women are super models in your own right. Can you explain why some factual, evidence-based posts about chris' questionable past were delted, while sexist nasty rants about Monica are still sitting on this board? Hmmmmm?

That event, staged outside a newly built primary school in Boyle Heights, felt more like a segment of MTV’s TRL than a press conference, with student supporters of Gárcía shrieking gleefully as Villaraigosa rolled up to the curb with Nuñez, the Assembly speaker. Yet even with the rock-star treatment of the mayor, Villaraigosa’s overarching message was a bit confusing, what with his plan to eliminate school-board elections and all.
Gárcía, peppered with requests for her own view of the takeover issue, said repeatedly that she simply wants to work with the mayor and sees no need to discuss a plan that won’t be released by Villaraigosa until April. Villaraigosa, not shy himself about offering a coy response to a press question, hinted that he just might appoint Gárcía to the school board once he gains control of the district.
