Some of our commenters accused Assembly candidate Jim Alger of not supporting his political rival, Councilman Greig Smith's, plan for dealing with rubbish in LA.This evening, Jim sent the following over. I guess that puts that accusation to rest.
This coming Friday, February 24th will be the LAST CHANCE for the community to make public comment on the re-signing of the current contract between BFI and Los Angeles for their residential trash.
Last Friday, City Council adopted Councilman Greig Smith's RENEW LA plan and Council President Eric Garcetti decided to name three council members to negotiate with BFI.
If for any reason, (which Bureau of Sanitation is recommending) City Council votes to adopt the Option entitled Option 1 as is - it will be impossible for Councilman Smith's plan to be implemented.
We need to support Councilman Smith's plan which will eventually phase out Sunshine, albeit slower than we would have liked and attend this meeting or write letters to Council members requesting anything but Option 1 as it is currently written.
Councilman Smith has proven that it won't necessarily cost as much as the Bureau of Sanitation is claiming. The Mayor promised he would spend as much as the City was going to pay before Waste Management pulled out. Now the difference in cost is even less. Don't let BFI bully us any longer. Granada Hills and Sylmar has suffered the environmental injustice long enough! Please speak up!
If you don't wish to go downtown, you may go to the Van Nuys City Hall building, Room 208 and read your statement requesting they don't vote for Option 1.
If you don't wish to speak, but would like to go downtown to watch (large numbers of people can never hurt in light of the Mayor's promise to us), you may call us at 818-360-4346 or write back and we'll make arrangements for car pools that are leaving at 9:15 from Van Gogh School.

What has the Mayor Sam blog become, the Jim Alger for whatever website?
Well, when another candidate in the 38th does ANYTHING for the community, maybe Sam can post on that individuals contributions to society.
Seeing none, no such report exists.
Lets see how long it takes to hit Jim with some scurrilous accusations again.
it looks like alger just sent off someone else's press realease or something. it doesn't look like its saying alger supports the smith plan.
All he did was forward the NV's press release. In fact, this is what he said in he "forward"...
"The following message is being forwarded by my campaign as a community service to the North Valley Coalition. The issue of Sunshine Canyon is truly one that effects the entire city. Please take a moment to hear their plea and respond in any way you can, either on behalf of yourself, or your council if possible."
And, it wasn't even sent by him.
This is a joke. I guess now he can say that he is the one that solved the City's trash problem, parted the red sea, and cured cancer!
OK, so, there he goes again, trying to take credit for someone else's work.
I guess that's what convicted felons do. They steal.
Okay dum dums lets explain something here.
We contact elected officials and political candidates and make them aware of us. We also send them questions asking their stances on various issues. We invite these people to send us their press releases, event notices, news, etc. What sounds interetsing - what we think you might want to read - we post or work with one way or another. Sometimes, they even come to us before we get to them.
Some politicians (not only Jim Alger) have figured out Mayor Sam is a good venue to get their message out. Others have not gotten this yet. If you're a regular reader you can probably figure out which campaigns have Mayor Sam on their lists.
When we ask campaigns and electeds for information, sometimes they get back to us, sometimes they don't. A recent example, there is a man and woman in the 20th senate district we're hoping to hear back from on one particular issue.
Obviously Jim Alger's campaign has been prolific in their contributions, which we appreciate. We don't print everything they send us, and we're not the only blog they communicate to.
If you work for a campaign or an elected, you might think about adding us to your list. We'll write stories about you if we think its interesting and we'll be glad to post your press releases either on the Sister City or if not for sure on Mayor Sam 2.

No one likes a landfill in their backyard. However, the homeowners of Granada Hills probably didn't mind so much when they bought their properties at a discount. After all, the landfill has been there a while.
If the Council wanted to stop dumping at Sunshine Canyon, they shouldn't have voted to increase capacity.
While I agree we need to do more to divert waste (recycling, etc.), dumping our garbage in someone else's backyard and paying more to do so isn't the solution. Moreover, there is NOTHING that stops other municipalities from dumping their garbage at Sunshine.
We don't care how Mayor Sam got the email. Good for Alger for forwarding it on. Obviously, we are crazy with our own work right now. Thank you Jim and thank you Mayor Sam.
We don't get our houses for any discounted prices here in Granada Hills.
You are correct. Not renewing the contract will not stop other municipalities from dumping here. However, since the dump cannot take trash from OUTSIDE the County of Los Angeles and we are BFI's BIGGEST contract, that will only make BFI scramble for all the businesses.
Every other city in the County already has a contract with their waste hauler and some with more than one hauler. They've split the waste stream in some cities, as should the City of Los Angeles. BFI will not be able to strong-arm the other cities in the County to break their contracts.
The second largest city in the County is Santa Clarita. They passed a resolution that says they can NOT use BFI and they can NOT dump in Sunshine Canyon. They've been more supportive than our own city.
The North Valley Coalition has never just pushed to dump it in someone else's neighborhood. Never. We have had it for 30 years though and it's high time the other waste sheds took their own share. Each of the waste sheds should take care of their own waste. Why should Granada Hills and Sylmar take all of your trash from the westside, east side and the south side?
The reality is... the city of Los Angeles DID adopt Greig Smith's RENEW LA plan and they will not be able to implement if they simply renew what the crooked, BFI-lobbyist-marinated Bureau of Sanitation's recommendation of Option 1. So why do they waste their time adopting things they can't implement?
If you were to pay any attention at all, the NVC is asking for any option except for Option 1. We aren't unreasonable people. Option 2 would split the waste stream and we would still be getting half of the city's residential waste at Sunshine. There - I just shot down your NIMBY accusation which I'm sure was coming up next.
Forget that the Mayor broke his promise to us when he was running. We cut him an enormous break after he explained his dilemma. We sat down with him in his office on August 4th and he told us that he was willing to go up to the price that the city was going to sign before Waste Management pulled out of the process.
Would you like to see the letter that he sent to us following that meeting?
Greig Smith has been able to get that price even lower and the Councilmembers and the Mayor need to listen.
Mayor Villaraigosa wants to be a leader in the recycling arena. He can't be a leader if he simply chooses Option 1.
Any option but 1!

The neighborhood council here sent out the mayor's budget survey and we got well over 550 responses! Nobody can discount the fact that in the entire city, 63% of the city said in the mayor's survey that they were willing to pay either $7 or $11 more a month on the issue of trash.
7:44 anon It sounds like he was doing precisely what he said he was doing, forwarding an email on behalf of the NVC.
The email was sent by Anne Zilliak, who is an NVC member and works on Jim's campaign so it is possible Jim doesn't even know it went out, although I doubt that.
He certainly isn't trying to take credit for anything.
Jim has enough accomplishments under his belt, and usually politicians take credit for his work not the other way around.
Jim has always said he supports parts of RENEW LA but feels it falls short of Greig Smiths' promise to "close Sunshine Canyon once and for all".
City Council postponed the Sunshine Canyon vote so it could "appoint a committee" to renogiate with the dump...
Anyone know the status of that? Did they ever form a committee? Are they going to actually vote tomorrow (Friday)?

Anne Ziliak wouldn't have spelled her own name wrong.
Anne's name is spelled wrong in Simple Send, not something anyone can control other than the people at Simple Send.

Previous poster is correct. Simple Send (which we use at the council offices) allows you to select from a predetermined list of senders. If a name was originally entered incorrectly by the programmers at Simple Send, then it would stay that way until they fixed it.
Not a big deal in my book. Besides, its the message that counts and you have them talking trash again.
I am no Alger fan but he has used whatever influence he has to advance a cause by stirring up the shitstorm with Smith and keeping people focused on the issue. That can only help the people at the NVC who seem to return the favor by helping his campaign.
As an active member of the North Valley Coalition, I can guarantee you that as long as Anne was able to push this information out, she would not care if her name was spelled wrong, nor who actually sent the email. Who would even know that her name was spelled wrong??
We have such a serious issue before us, I wish that the readers of this blog would just pay attention to the facts.
I don't know who "Anne's friend" is, and I don't care anything about Simple Send or the spelling of her name.
We do, at the NVC have a habit of supporting candidates who support us, but only as individual members as we are a non profit group.
The hard part is getting people interested in something as boring as trash, which has zero sex appeal and getting the City to do the right thing. We have to fight huge industries with tons of money to spread around to candidates, but we never give up.

For someone who "doesn't care" you proved you do by posting twice on here but that is besides the point.
Since you are here -- a week or so ago someone posted that you had given money you owed to Jim after telling him not to put it in his campaign. Yet he has you listed as a donor on his 460.
Someone else noticed that your "donation" was a credit card donation and thereby no cash changed hands. So, which is it?
Do you support Jim and donated to his campaign or is he laundering money?

I said I didn't care how the message got out to Mayor Sam. I VERY MUCH care that it did get out. I certainly don't care if someone had their name spelled wrong. Therefore, I'm not quite sure what you don't get.
I don't know if I know you or not, but I'll tell you this... I'm a real tough person to bully. Nearly impossible.
Many moons ago, Jim Alger called me and asked me to support him. I said okay and gave him lots of information on Sunshine Canyon, Las Lomas and various other issues that occur in this Assembly District. My best friend Anne, got involved and why not? Alger was doing more for the North Valley Coalition than half of our own members.
However, then several of my friends filed papers and decided to run. I've known Lyn Shaw for years. She's been there when I needed her in the past although never on the issue of Sunshine Canyon. Then Sid Gold filed his papers. Not only is he a neighbor, but he's a fellow neighborhood council board member and a member of the NVC. I've even worked with the Republican, Mary Barrientos on various issues.
At this point, I told Alger I would not be on his endorsement list or be a public figure in his campaign. I surely don't believe I'm an important figure who will make or break a campaign, that's for sure.
But I'm from Ohio, where we have strong values and the least I could do was to give him money, because I thought that Lyn and Sid would have access to money that Jim might not. I believe that politicians should be in office briefly as a public servants and in Los Angeles, it takes millions of dollars just to run a council race.
I've never given money to a campaign before, but I've put in a lot of hours on a lot of campaigns. In this particular campaign, I will stay completely out of it until after the Primary. Then I will work day and night on the campaign to support the Democrat who wins.
I've gotten a lot of people mad at me in a lot of campaigns too. Candidates are very vindictive when you are on the other side.
Because I'm a tenacious fighter, it would not serve anyone well to raise my ire. I'm a better friend than foe. I don't hold grudges, but I don't take kindly to threats either.
I never read a thread insinuating that I didn't really give Jim Alger's campaign money of my own volition or I would have responded immediately.
I'm not sure where all you people find the time to blog here so much. Maybe you need an issue like Sunshine to work on. It keeps you hopping.
I have extremely limited contact with Jim Alger, but I certainly appreciate what he's done for the NVC and I will publicly thank him here.
Now go start rumors about campaign contributions elsewhere; you're barking up the wrong tree here.

Mr. Alger Flip-Flopped on the issue.
It is my opinion that Mr. Alger really did not want Mr. Smith to lead any successful effort on Sunshine Canyon. Mr. Alger wishes to define himself as the candidate who can close sunshine canyon.
Yet he has offered no real plan.
He had previously refused to support Mr. Smith at all.
On Feb 11 he issued a statement on Garbage Chronicles III. He said, "I won't get behind Mr. Smith's plan." He added, "I will not carry his water for him." What he did not get, until now, was that Smith's plan at least offered some relief now for residents of Granada Hills. He was not carrying Smith's water, he was working for those residents.
Now the community is speaking with one voice at this critical time. The Mayor should be the target, not Mr. Smith.

Alger has CONSISTANTLY said that he "supports PARTS (See that word P-A-R-T-S) of Smiths plan but DOES NOT support it in its entirety because it does not (now listen up here is the good part) it DOES NOT CLOSE SUNSHINE CANYON AS SMITH PROMISSED VOTERS HE WOULD DO.
Now I understand to support Smith your education level is limited to the third grade but let's see if you finally got that through your thick skull.
The crack staff of 2.5 at the Hilfenaus camp forgot to show up at the SFV Young Democrats Endorsement meeting last night.(guess they should pay attention to Algers Public Schedule on his website)
Despite a last minute stand in by the Vice President of the club speaking on her behalf, the votes came down as follows:
Alger 50%
Shaw-Hilfenhaus - 33%
No Endorsement - 17%
It seems no matter how many low down dirty tricks they try, Team Alger picks them off one by one.
Not bad Jim. Didn't make the 60% you needed but any club you take away is a win. Especially when the VP of that club endorses her in front of the group and then speaks on her behalf. You should have raised a fit.

Mr. Alger does not really want any success regarding Sunshine Canyon. It is a political issue he would like to use now and in the future to define himself. He will cast himself as the candidate who will shut down Sunshine Canyon. Yet he has not outlined how he would do this.
The council has 14 other members who's districts are not significantly impacted by Sunshine Canyon. How will he succeed?
Does Wal-Mart accept returns? Or should we just give those flip flops to Rocky?
