FIREFIGHTERS ENDORSE CINDY MONTAÑEZ FOR STATE SENATE

Not a good day for the Council President...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

17 November 2005

In a decisive endorsement, the association representing Los Angeles’ Firefighters today endorsed Assemblymember Cindy Montañez for the 20th Senate District.

After interviewing the candidates and reviewing their records, The United Firefighters Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Firefighters Association made the endorsement of Montañez over her opponent, L.A. Council President Alex Padilla.

“When we looked at the two candidates, the choice for firefighters was clear,” said Dave Gillote, president of the Los Angeles County Firefighters Association. “Only one candidate makes the safety of our communities her priority regardless of the political calculations or sacrifice. That’s why Firefighters stand with Cindy Montañez in this fight.”

“I’m proud to be endorsed by the men and women of United Firefighters Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Firefighters Association,” said Cindy Montañez. “I’m humbled and honored to have the trust of those that put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe.”

The Firefighters join the long list of Public Safety organizations supporting Montañez for State Senate, including the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs, the Los Angeles County Professional Peace Officers Association, the California Association of Highway Patrolmen, and the Police Officers Research Association of California (PORAC).

The 20th State Senate District covers most of the eastern and central portions of the Los Angeles San Fernando Valley and the City of San Fernando.

Start preparing for CD 7 run because you have no chance against Alex and James et al.

Ouch! Gillote hits the nail on the head.

And 9:23 - Cindy has a great shot precisely BECAUSE of James, et al. Jimmy has lost his mojo, needs all his luck for the upcoming investigation.

"Not a good day for the Council President..."

pretty articulate statement...considering Padilla's biggest contributor to his NUMEROUS accounts (over 5000+ in the last couple of months) is also in the papers--Mark Handel.

Indeed, not a good time to be rep for CD7.

Interesting, but not surprising, that Antonio would hold off his harsh words for the School Board until AFTER the last election, in which he endorsed Huizar.

That's really quite a blow -- that the LA City Council President could not secure an endorsement from the LA City Firefighters.

How much longer do people reckon that Alex remains Pres? I know he wants to hang on through the June primary so he can continue to use it as a fundraising platform.

My guess is that his days are numbered -- and the Firefighters must know that.

You missed the point, Archie. . . does Cindy have a RACK?

That's what really matters, right?

Excellent move by LA Firefighters. Alex is moving out of the City and going to Sacremento. This leaves Cindy with taking the CD7 job, which unquestionably, is a better and more influential job than State Senator.

Supporting her now assures her support when she takes over CD7, which frankly, is a job that will impact LA Firefighters way more than state senate.

nice rationalization, but what happens to that logic when the California Professional Firefighters (the statewide union) endorses Cindy on monday?

the fact is that once one of these unions that alex is threatening stand up to him, he'll be exposed for the paper tiger he is.

and if he does lose the presidency, what then? he's just a lame duck councilmember that hasn't done shit for his district.

Holy Shit.Anyone denying this isn't big better wake up and smell the coffee. Even if there is a background thought that Cindy would get CD7 as a consolation prize that would benefit Firefighters, who wants UFLA walking against them in an election. Besides, if Cindy gets the Council gig all those boys lining up for Mayor better be looking over their shoulders. The better gosip is that Fabian isafraid that if Alex gets to the Senate ahead of him there goes the ProTem job.

He lied to you, he just let you keep the presidency until the election last week. Start moving...your out. You will now be embarrassed as he removes you from the position publicly. Which will make Cindy look good during all the turmoil...

I think we'll give her a fundraiser too.

And we'll all make sure that the people that work for us will work for her too. We'll all be there making phone calls for her and walking precincts. Plus the day of the election, we'll take the day off from work to help GOTV.

"Garcetti and colleagues, according to three sources, have been talking in recent weeks about when to topple Padilla. Timing was important: Tony Cardenas was interested in the job and Herb Wesson and Jose Huizar — who won election to the council last week — will soon be on board and could have complicated a presidency vote. "

Word on the street is that Cindy will garner up many of councilmember endorsements..before she turns AP's lights out with the mayor's endorsement.

I'm sure Bratton is gonna dual endorse.

Politics is cannibalism.

The long awaited moment when the Latino political community has grown so strong that there are no more caucasians to devour, and so they start eating their own.

Why would The Mayor come out publically for either when he can tell both he supports them privately?

An endorsement by Antonio is a no-win for him.

The primary is a long way away (June 6, 2006); why is everyone so excited now? Who knows?

I guess everyone has forgotten about poor Pacheco (Nick who?) and need to blog away.

OK, dum-dums, go at it.

Takeover of LAUSD encouraged
Mayor appeals to parents
By Rick Orlov, Staff Writer

EL SERENO - Shifting his campaign for LAUSD reform, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Friday appealed to parents for their support and said he will resume his previous proposal to take over governance of the Los Angeles Unified School District. After several weeks of vacillating on the issue, Villaraigosa said he now has decided that mayoral control is the only way to affect reform and his advisers are looking at legal options and requirements.

ANTONIO CHANGES HIS MIND AND FLIP FLOPS TOO MUCH. DIDN'T HE JUST SAY LAST MONTH HE WOULD TAKE CONTROL AFTER HIS TERM?

CM came through big time for AV out in the SFV since Day 1 when everybody was sitting on the fence with Hahn during the primary...forget the bandwagoners during the run-off.

Padilla is well known in the Northeast San Fernando Valley and has a formidable base of support.

For all the complaints we have about the guy, he is popular with his constituents. The average citizen is probably not a blogger like you and I - and hence, not aware of his ethic violations and his connections with Acevedo et al., for the most part that is.

It will be a good race!

November 19, 2005 4:23 PM

Sadly for those constituents that like him...the NE Valley isn't the senate. CM + AP will battle it out there.

It's gonna come down to west of the 405.

Non-Latino voters in the 40th A.D (the majority of the 20th). aren't gonna appreciate somebody a la Jim Hahn...because believe me you....there will be some bombs dropped on Padilla. Good bye "MIT grad" "Democratic Star" etc etc etc and all the lore they've created for him.

AP pretty soon will be too embarassed to step outside....He's gonna get hurt.

brace yourself for the knives to come at him from every angle.

If Alex leaves the presidency, it’s not because of a coup. He’s been spending time in Sac and meeting with local legislators lining up his ducks. Capitol insiders agree that this will be a tough race for Cindy. When push comes to shove though… Members like endorsing their own, especially if their own is chair of the powerful Rules Committee. Look to see who the Latino Caucus endorses. Last year they made a compromise that basically allows for a split endorsement between the upper house and lower house members.
