L.A.'s schools bleed red ink

Gotta love the opening line of this Daily News Article...
Acknowledging that their effort will probably lead nowhere, Los Angeles Unified school board members will try again today to figure out how to pay for billions of dollars in retirement health benefits and workers' compensation costs - a burden that weighs heavily on the district's future.

The issue has intermittently appeared on board agendas for the past eight months, but the discussion has always been tabled. And board member Mike Lansing said he doubts that either the district staff or the teachers union has the resolve or motivation to tackle the issue.

"I want to make sure that this doesn't drop like an anvil all of a sudden one day and we're insolvent. I think it's something that all school districts need to address - where they build up debt and have no way to pay it off," Lansing said.

Your leadership at work!

how did huizar get all those endorsements? are they banking on him being a pushover? or did the mayor hold a gun to their heads? for sure huizar didn't get their endorsements on the merits.

Jose You know you are in deep shit. You will not beat Pacheco. You are a nice guy. I like you,but your record or what there is of it is nothing to shout about. I feel bad that on Nov. 8th you will be deeply embarrassed. In your heart you have to know that Pacheco deserves this seat. He has a proven record. He knows the job well. Yes his first term he was an arrogant ass. However, Nick seems to have grown tremendously in terms of personality. I am very impressed with him this time around.

Sephardic Genealogy????? WOW, I DID NOT KNOW THIS...

VILLAR NAME HAS THIS ROOT IN HISTORY...

-"Raizes Judaicas No Brasil" by Flavio Mendes Carvalho. This book contains names of Sephardim involved in the inquisition in Brazil. Many times date of birth, occupation, name of parents, age, and location of domicile are also included. Included in this list are the names of the relatives of the victims. Many of the victims were tortured to death or exiled so their lines might end here.(~)

Sephardic names from the book, "A Origem Judaica dos Brasileiros", by Jose Geraldo Rodrigues de Alckmin Filho, who personally provided the text. This publication contains a list of 517 Sephardic families punished by the inquisition in Portugal and Brazil. As familias punidas pela Inquidicao em Portugal e no Brasil.. (~)

A LETTER FROM THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
OFFICE OF THE CARDINAL
1011 FIRST AVENUE
NEW YORK, NY 10022-4134
September 8, 1999
My Dearest Friends,
The Jewish High Holy days come once again, reminding our world of who created it, who blesses it with life and who judges it in his merciful justice. G-d who gives all humanity the dignity of being made in his image, has chosen Israel as his particular people that they may be an example of faithfulness for all the nations of the earth. With sincere love and true admiration for your fidelity to the Covenant, I am happy once again to send my greetings for a blessed New Year.

This Sabbath evening, as the celebration of Rosh Hashanah commences, a new decade will begin. During the year of 5760 we Christians will start a new era of the year 2000, the turn of another millennium in our history. Our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, has asked all Christians to enter this new millennium in the spirit of Jubilee. Part of the process of Jubilee is a call for teshuva, or repentance. Ash Wednesday, March 8th, has been specially set aside as a day for Catholics to reflect upon the pain inflicted on the Jewish people by many of our new members over the last millennium. We most sincerely want to start a new era.

I pray that as you begin a new decade, and as we begin another millennium in our Jewish-Christian relationship, we will refresh our encounter with a new respect and even love for one another as children of G-d. Working in our own ways, but also working together, let us both remain committed to the fulfillment of G-d's reign. I ask this Yom Kipper that you understand my own abject sorrow for any member of the Catholic Church, high or low, including myself, who may have harmed you or your forebears in any way.

Be assured of my prayers and friendship. L'shanah tovah tikotevu!

Faithfully,

(signed)
John Cardinal O'Connor

Archbishop of New York
