Los Angeles Politics Hotsheet for Tuesday

Is he or isn't he? Some of the conventional wisdom around town is that developer Rick Caruso was leaning against a run for Mayor. However many potential Mayoral opponents were targets of Caruso at a recent speech before civic group TownHall. Blogger Paul Hatfield takes an early look at the race.

Who conspired to pressure the Los Angeles Times from not publishing teacher ratings? According to Witness LA, LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy, School Board President Monica Garcia and, curiously, Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce exec Gary Toebben.

Governor Jerry Brown has a plan to help California's budget woes.  Raise taxes!

The City of Los Angeles wants to spend more money marketing LA to potential tourists. How do they plan to pay for it? By raising taxes on tourists who come to visit.

What I've seen in Los Angeles is the local media being manipulated by the Mayor's goons like Monica Garcia, LAUSD, etc. LA Slimes is an example of the type of tabloid journalism we are now seeing. They put BS stories on the front page and good stories towards the end. This is why they have lost 1,000's or readers. More and more people are turning to the internet to get their news on national web sites where there is more balance. The LA Weekly seems to be more the paper of choice for everyone I know

If MT's rumor that Caruso has changes his party affiliation to Democrat, then he may still be serious about running. I hear Trutanich will turn himself into a Dem too.

Trump's decision not to run is a blow to the blowhards like Nuch and Caruso. They both might have to re-think their political futures.

ooops. That should be narcisist, not nihilist - although a nihilist that believes in nothing and a narcisist that only believes in himself are kind of one and the same.

Caruso has too much baggage to be elected dog catcher.

If Caruso gets in, he will regret it to his dying day. The media will trash him, and all the people he has run over in his lfe will come out of the woodwork and trash him.

The microscope is cruel and the press likes nothing more than to build up and tear down.

What fun we will all have with Caruso.

Run, Rick, Run!!!

Caruso as mayor... I don't see it.

The LA news media might goad him into the race and the destroy him.

He can't afford to take his eye off his finances and dilly dally as mayor. Maybe he doesn't like Beutner and is prepared to spend a fortune just to knock him out, otherwise he doesn't have the excess capacity (time) to focus on the job.

I am still surprised Tim Tim Leiweke doesn't jump in the race.

How do you catch a thief? You hire one.

Leiweke knows how corrupt the city hall is since he has been bribing it for nearly 20 years. He also has the business intellect to know what it takes to run a big entity, manage a budget, meet demands, and find revenue.

Might as well have him get in there and do his thing. He has just as much dirt on the special interest honchos than they on him. It will be like a nuclear threat.

Realistically though, with how bad the Valley has been treated since the secession movement, I don't think anyone is going to beat Wendy Greuel. All she has to do is find the cash.

Wendy Greuel is using her City Controller job to show she's for accountability (of others) and this is planned to get her some votes next year.

Still, she' was a council member for a couple of terms where this "skill" was not exercised much if at all, being one of the "unanimous," "don't-rock-the-boat" CMs.

All for poltical gain and the much too freindly set up in the administration will have her doing the same as whatever is expedient to move her career along.

Villaraigosa will be gone but the CMs and Gruel will not be much different as far as benefitting the people of the city.

What they say they "will" do for us matters less that what they actually produced in two or more terms running the city.

1:19... I agree with you that she is not a good selection for mayor.
I am just stating my gut feeling based on how things have been in the valley.

Villar lost the valley last time around. Perry is the only legitimate racial minority candidate, Garcetti is white (let's be honest about that).

The valley voters, for the most part, are old and looking for love from city hall. CD12 voted in Englander, Cardenas won... so the valley has a recent track of voting for the same clowns.

The older valley "activists" will vote for Greuel because 1. she is from the valley and 2. they love the idea of proximity to power.
With Greuel they get leverage in city hall.

Greuel still trolls the valley and has traction.

OMG I see the other candidates have their staffers posting against Caruso. They obviously are sitting home typing on their computers instead of being out in the real world to hear the conversations that Caruso is the man to bring down City Hall. He even speaks like no one else in this city and has a record to back up claims. So go ahead little ones, keep blasting him, and go tell your boss you did your job
