Community rallies to support charter school

By Jennifer Solis

Of the hundred charter schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District, few can claim the kind of community support that has been shown to Academia Semillias del Pueblo in El Sereno.

More than 200 parents and local neighborhood residents gathered at the Huntington Avenue school Saturday afternoon to express their desire for the school board to renew its charter later this year, and to keep the unique program aimed at instilling pride in children of Mexican and Native American background.

The 253-pupil academy became a "cause celeb" last week when a local talk radio station criticized the school’s principal, and sent out a reporter to interview him, the parents and students. One of the parents, believing that the reporter was taking pictures of the kids, chased after the reporter and confiscated his tape, which turned out to be audio, not video.

Principal Marcos Aguilar apologized to the station, but explained that his academy, like many other elementary schools, is continually on the alert for child predators, and the incident was an over-reaction to the presence of a stranger with recording equipment. The reporter was unhurt, but suffered torn clothing when he was tackled in front of the school.

The school serves over 150 local families, almost entirely from Mexico, with a program which emphasizing learning about the ancient heritage and culture, in order to give the students a sense of “roots” and pride, which should translate into motivation to become better students and future leaders.

Principal Aguilar was a teacher for several years at Garfield High School, and became frustrated at the great number of dropouts experienced there and other mostly Latino populated secondary schools. He attributes the lack of motivation to succeed to the denial of culturally relevant programs, and an inflexible attitude to Americanize first generation students in the elementary grades.

Aguilar partnered with some local community leaders and applied for a grant from the Raza Development Fund and Amicus Bank. A $1.4 million loan was acquired to turn an abandoned Masonic Lodge into a charter school in 2001, and the LAUSD granted a five year approval on December 11th of that year. Academia Semillias del Pueblo opened with about 150 students the following August.

Although California has almost 600 charter schools now in operation, and is increasing that number by a hundred each year, the requirements for a startup are very strict. Accountability is the same as that for all public schools which are supported by taxpayer funds.

Priority is given to prospective schools which serve low-achieving communities and have programs which are designed to appeal to the unique needs of their neighborhoods. ASP has grown to double its original K to 3 enrollment of 125, and now teaches from kindergarten through fifth grade.

The standardized test assessment scores are about the same as other elementary with similar demographics. Its current Academic Performance Index (API) is 597 (in 2004) out of a possible 800. Almost all its students are from low income, English learning families.

The LAUSD encourages the development of local charter schools to ease the shortage of school facilities and seat space, and increase responsible parent and student involvement in learning. The district’s mission statement for charters is to follow LAUSD policy “except in those areas they specifically describe in their charters, such as curriculum, pedagogy, philosophy, personnel and governance.” Among the criteria encouraged is the “use of different and innovative teaching methods.”

Academia Semillias del Pueblo describes its course offerings as having dual-language immersion, global cultural studies, visual, performing and martial arts instruction, and “a living curriculum to give rise to a regenerative school culture that embraces the customs and traditions of those served.” This includes learning a vocabulary of the ancient Aztec language, Nahutal, and an understanding of the “base 20” mathematics used to build ancient pyramids to astronomical knowledge.

Throughout the campus is an impressive collection of Native American art and crafts, including Chicano folklore projects which have been produced by the schools’ students. The school has become a center for immigrant family “regeneration,” hosting ceremonies and festivals for students and adults forced to leave their homelands to find economic opportunity in “El Norte.”

According to this version, a parent chased the reporter because he thought the reporter was taking photos of the kids. Has this parent been identified and spoken with the police or media?

“The standardized test assessment scores are about the same as other elementary with similar demographics.”

Since Academia Semillias del Pueblo has a specialized curriculum tailored to the community it serves, shouldn’t the test scores be better than other elementary schools with similar demographics?

No comprendo the following.

Why are we dismissing the fact of Mr. Aguilar's racist comments and beliefs won't transfer to the children he serves?

Will Mr. Aguilar give these children the education they deserve without implementing a racist curriculum?

Will Mr. Aguilar accept responsiblity for his actions and resign?

Does he care for the education of students and school stay open?

If he cares he must resign! Let the school continue without racist directors.

OK, how do you mistake an audio recorder for a camera? You don't hold an audio recorder in front of your eye to get the recording. Sounds like Mr. Aguilar went with what he thought he could hide behind. Next he'll say that the parent thought that a bomb was being planted at the school.

In the words of Public Enemy "Shut it Down, Shut it Down, Shut it, Shut it down"

The station should sue the parent, the school and Mr. Aguilar.

Since when is detailing white racist attitudes, or the by-products of such behavior- which is what Aguilar was talking about - racists? Does talking about a drive by shooting make you a murderer too? Take a look at what he said, it makes sense and history backs up his claims. But again, if it is white, it is right.

5:32

Have you seen what's out there in regards to recording equipment - video or audio? Can you tell the difference? Or does it matter when you think there is a child predator on the loose? Yes, the police do have the parent's name - he went to Hollenbeck Station himself and no charges have or will be filed. Let the reporter file suit, it is his right. Maybe when a white judge throws this out of court you will finally understand. And regarding your bomb comment - on Friday the school was evacuated because of a bomb threat. The police and fire department were thre also. So keep talking out of your ass, it just proves what Aguilar was talking about.

The parents protested this morning outside KABC and refused to go on with McIntyre even though they were invited. Again, some of our tax dollars being spent on illegals. You can bet that if South LA had a racist school like this these same parents would be screaming. This school will only brainwash these young minds with crap. Parents are saying it teaches their culture that the kids don't get in other schools. How can this be fair to the other schools where students aren't learning their culture? We have so many other cultures here in LA why is this school singled out for this one race? They teach the kids to be radical about being Mexican. You will have criminals by the time they reach 6th grade.

Maybe you can open up a school to teach Hick Culture. Who knows, interbreeding cousins may be the rage of the future in L.A.

It's amazing how white folk quickly relegate the teachings of this country's racist past - and present- into the category of brainwashing. When there was a legally mandated bounty placed on the head of natives in California, was that brainwashing too - quite literal brain washing with bullets. And this was only 4 generations ago.

As an American who studied in UNAM, it is obsurd to see how these people are treating their young. The teaching of one indigeonous languange as THE language of the people only invalidates the rest of the indigeonous population. Nahuatl is not the only one, you have otomi, purepecha, and so on. I hope that the instructor of this school recognize it, or else its only running on hate and ignorance.

IF the LAUSD won't/doesn't educate children of color, then how...

Did Alex Padilla, the son of a poor immigrant family from Pacoima go to MIT?

Did Rocky Delgadillo - whether a liar or not - make it to Harvard?

Did David Hernandez become a Vietnam war hero, a succesful businessman and community activist?

Did Larry Elder go on to law school, a succesful business of his own and then became a nationally known media commentator?

All people of color who went through LAUSD.

They worked hard. Their parents cared. They study. Anyone who wants to can make it.

But in a world where kids who study, kids who achieve, kids who get good grades are accused of acting "white"," they have little luck at all.

Your trouble is not "the man." Your trouble is yourself.

You mention 4 people out of nearly 4 million people of color that have gone through LAUSD. This year nearly 40,000 16 year olds of color dropped out. And Alex Padilla nearly flunked out of MIT, thanks to his LAUSD preparation.

Yes there are success stories, but way to many failures. Which makes the success stories all the more noteworthy.

You say anyone who wants to can make it - if that were the case there would be nobody for the service industry, where most of these kids end up. Nobody plans on being a janitor or waiter or dishwasher, they just happen to fall victim to circumstances.

Your narrow mind must be a terrible thing to waste.

Dear PK the racist - amazing how you assume we're all WHITE. How does Korean fit into that picture? answer: it doesn't. Neither does the fact that I came from immigrant parents who spoke no English upon arriving here 35 years ago, yet they became fluent within 5 years. I went through the LA public school system yet I am not suffering because I wasn't taught Korean history. By the way, they don't teach American history in Mexico, do they? I didn't think so. I can't, as an American, hold any job of any importance in Mexico, can I? I can't own land in Mexico, can I?

I'm sick to death of catering to the Mexicans. It's so obvious they want to take over California because we already have systems in place for business, education and health care. We have roads and water and sewage systems. Mexico has the worst systems in every one of those categories. So rather than stay there and fix it, they keep coming here taking all we have, giving back nothing and - as in the case of this charter school - demanding more and more. Where will it end?

If we did half as much for disabled and sick kids as we do for Mexican kids, we'd have a great society I could be proud of. As it is, I'm actively seeking a job back East. Los Angeles and California have been turned into a racist garbage dump. Gee, just like Mexico!

That's a funny post coming from one of the most racially oppressed people in the world - Koreans. Do you know that Koreans born in Japan are still considered 2nd class citizens? Your talking shit about Mexico, what about Kim and your homeland. You obviously have never been to southern or central Mexico. Try Cuernavaca or Morelos or Sombrerete - all cities that would put any U.S. city to shame. And you say it took your parents 5 years to become fluent, what dumbfucks. Koreans are the wealthiest ethnic group in L.A. - look it up. And yet they can only carve out Koreatown as their niche. Some accomplishment. It obviously costs more money to cross the Pacific than to cross the U.S./Mexican border. Why did your parents leave Korea? You know why, because they were cast out by thier own people. Mexicans come here to better themselves. I guess your family coming here was a step down, and it has affected your narrow mind. Go back East, let's see how tolerant Boston or Philadelphia or Washington would be of your kimshi breath and pancake face. Just don't come running back to our home - here in Mexican L.A..

Have you ever heard of Chinese school? Most Asian kids are 1st or 2nd generation. Their parents have great pride in thier culture and they put them in Chinese school where they learn not only to hold on to their native language, but they get an additional 20 - 30 hours of schooling in math, english, science a week. This is a credit to them as a people.

Sure such academic pressure stymies the social gowth of some - no sports, dance or extra curricular activities for most Asians, but they are succeding.

Isn't Marcos Aguilar trying to do the same thing with his school?

The only thing that things kids are learning is how to keep themselves marginalized and out of the mainstream. Once they graduated from school, where are they going to go with the "Nautl language"? You say your teaching them about "their culture" What is their culture? Are they American? Where they born in Mexico? Are they Native-American? You are creating a culture within a culture and unfortunately when these kids grow up, they are going to be outcasts, and they are going to learn to hate the country they were born in, this is the country that feeds, cloths, and shelters them (as bad as it may be) What has Mexico done for their own people? Nothing! That is why they are here in the first place. We should teach them how to ask questions about our government, the importance of voting, not hating.....Stop isolating these kids and show them what the real world is like.

The parent did NOT "confiscate" the tape, he stole it.

By definition, only a person acting with property authority, such as a police officer with a warrant, can "confiscate" property. To say the parent "confiscated" the tape implies, incorrectly, that he was somehow within his rights in mugging the reporter and stealing his property.

Here's a standard dictionary entry for "confiscate:"

take or seize (someone's property) with authority : the guards confiscated his camera | [as adj. ] ( confiscated) confiscated equipment. • take (a possession, esp. land) as a penalty and give it to the public treasury : the government confiscated his property.

3. If Marcos Aguilar focused on the basics, his scores would be at least the same as El Sereno Elementary - the closest to his demographics and the best of the 3 schools.

BOY, am I glad none of you bozos trying to compare school performance actually works for LAUSD, or else we'd be in even worse shape.

Consider the BIG picture here. A new school starts in a low-income area (where more than half the students overall are already non-English speakers), one that CATERS to non-English speaking kids.

Which 100-200 students are going to jump ship from the standard school in the area, to the new one? The "A" and "B" students who are doing well, OR the ones who are having trouble and need a different environment, school makeup, or teaching method, in order to succeed?

Anyone, anyone???

(Do you REALLY think it was the "honor students" from El Sereno and Huntington that ran over to Academia the first few years?? NAH, then their parents would have to take those cheesy "my kid is an honor student at....." bumper stickers off their cars.

The FIRST and IMMEDIATE result is going to be that the percentage of non-English speaking kids goes DOWN in the schools they're leaving (helping to automatically improve THOSE schools test results).

Then do you compare the performance of the "new" school that TOOK the kids whose reading and language skills were dragging the traditional schools' down, to the school they left behind?

OR, do you give them a chance, over a NUMBER of years. Fortunately, people that study school are smarter than all of you, and they DON'T consider a school failing because of a 1 or 2 year snapshot -- but over a longer trend, and typically in comparison to their own, past TRENDING results. ESPECIALLY when the school is growing rapidly and CONTINUES to bring in dozens of NEW non-English speakers every year, affecting their scores.

No comparisons can be made until 1) that school's population stabilizes, and 2) they have a number of years to affect the performance of kids that most probably were FAILING elsewhere.

For any "sports" fans out there... think of it as an "expansion team" except they don't get any "freebie" first round draft picks.

But YOU want they to have "winning" seasons for first couple years in the league.

The agrument that one can't compare performance of Los Angeles Unified elementary schools with standardized tests in a square mile area of Northeast Los Angeles - is hogwash and reflects the excuse mentality of teachers and administrators unions.

A charter school from day one should be able to equal if not outperform its peers in their neightborhood - if teachers and administrators of this madrassa really had anything special to offer - the results would show it.

Sadly the madrasa of Marcos Aguilar takes the same amount of money from the public tax feed trough and produces even worse results. By contrast the parochial schools which run with a quarter to third of funds per student beat them all in academic performance.

Its not that students are any less motivated or talented, its the teachers and administrators whose motivation is selfishly focused on increasingly higher and higher compensation with no better results to show for it.

Marcos and his teaching faculty are just as greedy as their counterparts in LAUSD. LAUSD teachers and administrators have a common mantra - they is no accountablilty in academic results of their students.

“The school teaches the ancient Nahutal language of the Aztecs and its base-20 math system. Another language of emphasis is Mandarin, even though no Chinese attend.”

This bit of info makes me wonder if China is bankrolling some of the funding of this school and the Aztlan movement.

“MEChA, founded at U.C. Santa Barbara in 1969, has the stated goal of returning the American Southwest to Mexico. “

Why would these Indians want to be reunited with a country whose elite despises them?

Marcos Aguilar, the school’s founder and principal, said in an interview with an online educational journal, Teaching to Change L.A., he doesn’t think much of the Brown v. Board of Education decision that desegregated American schools.

Aguilar simply doesn’t want to integrate with white institutions.

“We don’t want to drink from a white water fountain, we have our own wells and our natural reservoirs and our way of collecting rain in our aqueducts,” he said.”

I completely agree with him! I support his desire for segregation. Of course I don’t agree with non-Hispancis paying tax money for their benefit, not that such a thing should even be going on in White America, but this type of militancy is exactly what we need to wake whites up. Whites won’t wake up on their own, they’re too passive, selfish, and out of touch with reality. They can only react to the anti-white behavior of non-whites.

La Academia del Pueblo is a L.A. charter school. It is funded by tax dollars along with funds from La Raza, and MECHA.
Hell, it might be all tax dollars. How many of the dollars from the likes of La Raza and MECHA are also tax dollars?

If these kids are so desperate to learn about their native culture, why did they leave in the first place? With rights come responsibilities. If these kids want to be Americans, then they should learn AMERICAN history, not irrelevent stuff about the Aztecs.

RK: Not one peep about this racist school has come from Morris Dee’s radical leftist, corrupt SPLC. Nor have they mentioned anything about Aztlan takeover, La Raza racism, or the groups advocating A Republique de el Norte, or Gutierrez’s statements advocating the murder of Gringos, plus dozens of other racist groups and incidents. Not one word.

Nor have we heard his group utter or write a word about the racist Black Muslims, and the numerous racist statements from literally hundreds of high-profile blacks and black groups, nor black crime in general. And othe racist groups and incidents. Not a word.

But let one white person declare he would prefer to live by himself, away from urban blacks and mestizos, or let one single rancher try to protect his ranch, and this miscreant and his corrupt, biased, tax exempt org is right there with a law suit, pretending as if he is all that is between an evil racist and the absolute national security of the country.

I’d like to see about a hundred pro se litigants file suit against this dork and his cesspool of so-called love and tolerance for defamation, because he runs off at the mouth quite frequently, denigrating people who belong to a particular group, I’m pretty sure there could be judgements rendered against him personally, if not his criminal enterprise.

Even if they didn’t win, my, my, my, what a gigantic headache fighting for his very life he would have if that were to occur.

From the show this morning:

Sandy Wells, the reporter who went to the school to get information on it actually received a very thinly veiled threat of violence from the principal himself. Said he should “watch his back.” When Wells pressed him what he meant by that, the principal said something like “oh, well, I’ve been receiving threats around here, so it might not be safe for you.”

Sandy Wells went to the school this morning to file a report and was assaulted. After announcing himself and requesting to talk to Marcos Aguilar, he was denied access to the school. Wells was standing on the sidewalk outside the school when a vehicle jumped the curb. Wells moved out of the way before the vehicle hit him. Then the driver got out, chased Wells, tackled him, demanded he hand over his tape, and forcibly stole the tape

Lou Dobbs reported on this tonight. Dobbs said the principal wouldn’t talk to them. He told about the incident with Sandy. He also said that citizens were concerned that this school is being paid for by American taxpayers. The school has also taken down their website.

I think that the people should make their voices heard to the school. It is your tax money that is paying for this nonsence and they have the hubris to assault a reporter. A reporter who was only trying to do his job.

Call them, fax them, and e-mail them:

Here is another fax number associated with the school:

I heard this story last night and was horrified. The news reporter was actually attacked and almost runover deliberately.

Does anybody believe that if this was a white, anglo-saxon principal, he would allowed to get away with this stuff? Absolutely not!!!! This country has turned topsy turvy. Right is wrong and wrong is always right. Preach diversity, tolerance and multicultural hogwash only if you are white. And Bill O’Reilly claims there’s no such attack going on, on white heritage.

By the way, I know that El Sereno area where he “teaches” very well. It’s got one heck of a scary separatist community. It LOOKS like the shantytowns of Quito, Ecuador, complete with antiamerican graffiti, Chiclet sellers and symbols of leftist militancy. Some of those groups are very secretive. Last time I was there, some money seemed to be coming in to some of the “community centers” there. Meanwhile, Hugo Chavez is real popular and that’s the place you go in LA if you want to go to a pro-Hugo-Chavez event. I suspect it might be one of those places where Chavez is financing certain things, some of his operatives were actually there a few months ago.

Not all "mexicans, or mexican americans support this type of segregation...and as for an ecuadorian shanty town...hardly... can't even compare it. We are not all the same you know...just like chinese are different than japanese, anglos are different from eastern europeans, and blacks are diffent from blacks that come from spanish speaking countries or from africa. If you are born in this country you are an American regardless of your ethic background. You either choose to become American or you are born American.

MELTING POT remember? Thats what gets me, American history, yeah right, how about brainwashed white history.

It just cracks me up, when white folk keep saying we are the aliens when I think its Whitey who doesnt want to assimilate. Who said this is YOUR country anyway? My family has been here 3 generations and we still speak spanish and we are all fluent in English. Give it up whitey, dont just eat the food, live the culture..

p.s. oh BTW, isnt there more white folks in prison, and eh. dont they all speak english? yeah. thats it, english the language of the prisons...

Mayor Sam,
Jennifer Solis is involved in a full blown cover-up with this bogus charter school's administration over the incident with the KABC news reporter. Sandy Wells.

Its very clear from the disingenous remarks made by the principal, Marcos Aguilar on the Larry Elder radio show on KABC, first denying the incident and later, insinuating that a news reporter, was a suspected child molester,

These lies by the Marcos Aguilar are completely incongruous with the context of news reporter, Sandy Wells wearing an LAPD press ID badge around his neck, came to the school of attempting to convince the principal to reconsider his stand of not speaking to the media and giving an objective point by point rebuttal of KABC radio personality,
Doug MacIntytre's allegations concerning his charter school.

Marcos Aguilar has something to hide about this public school that brings in 2 million dollars of state tax dollars a year his school receives with no accountablility. Aguilar is so obsessed with denial he turns down a fantastic opportunity by turning down CNN's Lou Dobbs for a nationwide audience to hear why his academic approach works.

Is it in the interest to hire five or henchmen like guards to prevent legitimate news media into a public school on the pretext of protecting children? What a bunch of pig manure.

Between his salary of about 90,000/year and his wife's salary as a teacher there - plus fringe benefits - Aguilar clearly has reason's to defend the school he founded. Its very perplexing for his stonewalling and cynical manipulation of the press.

Mayor Sam's website is becoming an unwitting colloborator in a cover-up by not demanding full scrutiny of this dubious charter school with "powder puff, Josef Gobells like propaganda" by Jennifer Solis.

Its quite clear that the Marchos Aguilar's management style and school can not stand objective scrutiny - and his Nixonian attempt to manage the press by controled press releases, shutting down his website, and contrived press conferences is going to fail.

Not only will tax payers rightfully question the viability and accountablility of his charter school, but the whole matter charter schools are in the public interest in California. Marcos Aguilar and wife have a conflict of interest in hiding his ideological, Maxist bent from the public. Its time for the ghost of Mayor Sam, to step forward and demand accountibilty.
