Los Angeles Politics Hotsheet for Thursday; The Joseph Mailander "Community Leader" Edition
Joseph Mailander's "credible source" and "community leader" in handcuffs. |
"I have spoken to over twenty people directly regarding this dispute, and many more in email.
I count seven community leaders--note I didn't say members, I said leaders--who strongly oppose revisiting the Specific Plan. They are: Terre Ashmore. Kathleen Travers. Elaine Brown. David DeMeule. David Cain. Terry Hake-Church. And one who would rather remain anonymous at this point."
- Joseph Mailander
Joseph Mailander's inexplicably obsessive attacks on volunteer community activists in Sunland-Tujunga turned comical yesterday after Joseph labeled several of his questionable sources as "community leaders". One of his "community leaders" is a convicted felon recently arrested on federal weapons charges, another one is a squatter (David Cain, 2nd VP of the STNC) reportedly living in an old truck shell in the Tujunga wash.
In a series of hit pieces against the community, Joseph Mailander cites as one of his main sources none other than David "Doc" DeMulle, a convicted felon (felony perjury, felony attempt to obtain aid) and local smear merchant. "Doc" was arrested just last year on felony weapons charges for possession of and possible sale of hundreds of firearms including automatic rifles and hand grenades.
Joseph Mailander's sources for information, Elaine Brown and Terry Hake-Church, the latter a woman often appearing at community meetings barefoot, are historically known for opposing any changes to the Specific Plan and have been criticized for driving Commerce Avenue into the ground through their Commerce Avenue Business and Restoration Association (COBRA). COBRA has fallen under heavy criticism for it's mismanagement and failing to revitalize the historic business district of Commerce Avenue. Many in the community have donated funds to COBRA, which Ms. Brown and Ms. Hake-Church claim is a 501(c)3 non-profit group. But what happened to those funds and why is COBRA now trying to completely disappear from the face of the earth ?
"Don't Ask, Don't Tell " may soon be a relic of America's homophobic past as a federal court has just ordered the U.S. Government to immediately stop enforcing the ban on openly gay soldiers serving in the military. The Dept. of Defense says they will comply with the ruling even as DOD and Justice Dept attorneys are examining the decision.
Councilman Dennis Zine has announced that he will indeed seek the office of City Controller in 2013. Zine is promising a more open, transparent, and efficient city government if elected. You may recall that Zine was called out earlier this year for voting on several matters that involved companies that had hired his lobbyist/land-use consultant girlfriend, Veronica Becerra. Zine claims that Veronica does not lobby him.

Mailander...what a mess!

He says he's talk to dozens of people against reviewing the specific plan. How can that be? It's only Elaine and Doc.

I'm not new to Sunland, but I've never seen any info about COBRA. I'd like to know more about COBRA. Where do they have meetings? And how come Commerce looks so bad if there is an improvement group? Sounds fishy to me.

Do your research. David Cain is also a convicted felon and was booted from the Coast Guard. Some
community leader you've got there,MT.

Zine says his girlfriend, a lobbyist, never lobbied him.
That's like a politician saying that he's received thousands of dollars in contributions and gifts from a lobbyist, but none of that affected his votes.
Sure, we'll take you at your word.

COBRA, and specifically Elaine Brown and her coven have unlimited energy to fight positive change on Commerce Ave.
COBRA's actions over the years show that it is an organization that wants empty storefronts and failed businesses to be the norm.
To that end, Elaine Brown and her coven carry out relentless character assassinations on any person or organization that DARES to want to improve Commerce Ave and Sunland Tujunga.
Insanity!

Antonio wouild rather be jewish than Latino, this he has made very clear. I think he even got circumsized to prove his point. But not selecting Latinos is nothing new for this vendido - not pocho, some people take pride in that term. As the Speaker of the Assembly, he blocked another Latino from taking this position despite the fact that Bustamante, the first Latino speaker, paved the path for him. He left his Assembly seat, the first Latino Assembly seat, to a non-Latino. He has consistantly supported non-Latinos against Latinos, most recently in a congressional seat that left his partner in crime, Cedillo, out of Washington.
Antonio is only a Latino when it is time to put together some slick campaign brochures. Then he brings up all the negative Latino stereotypes to cry about his miserable upbringing - all lies of course. Bradley, Riordan and Hahn were much better friends of the Latino community.

Ah, now I get all that stuff about Elaine Brown. I read some stuff (probably in the Foothills Paper and I didn't even know what it was or who ran it, figured it was one more community newspaper that ST had that NoHo didn't) about how someone was accusing Cindy Cleghorn of evil stuff in the restoration of Commerce. I don't know Cindy well but I knew her to be a nice person and to run a great business ON Commerce Ave so I was, what does Red Spot call it(?) "bepuzzled."
Elaine Brown and her friends remind of the folks here from the CRA Project Area Committee in NoHo who fought the Arts District and were generally nasty, old people.
There was one guy who even went around splashing paint on the murals and created bogus newsletters from the Chamber of Commerce and Neighborhood Council spreading all types of lies about the progress going on in NoHo.
The NoHo Arts District isn't perfect at all and has a way to go still but if you've been here in the last year or two you will see a massive change, lots of activity and some great new businesses. Thank god the Elaine Browns and Joseph Mailanders of NoHo did not succeed.
(Most of them moved to Arizona by the way)

Only Tony Cardenas remembers the Speaker's race when Huggy kicked his butt.

Elaine might be trying to run and hide her COBRA Group and her connection to it but in this day age that is not possible.

Hey Joe B, Mailander is sending emails to people in S-T asking them if your "hit piece on him" is "fair and accurate" and if they think Joseph is for or against the community. Thought you'd want to know-

Who is Terre Ashmore? Kathleen Travers? I have lived in Sunland since 1995 and have never heard of these two. I attend Neighborhood Council meetings and helped on the No Home Depot campaign and don't recall these two names at all. Isn't a community leader usually someone most community members would recognize?

Thank you Mole for the info. Please send any further tidbits you may pick up to my email address. It is pretty easy to find or you can message me on Facebook. Thanks.

I didn't think a convicted felon could be elected to a Neighborhood Council Office.
Did David Cain divulge his felony status when running for office?

Word on the street is that Elaine Brown is having a meltdown over your story Joe B.

Poor poor Elaine Brown.
Joe B. couldn't be bullied into silence like she does to everyone else and now she's mad.
Poor poor evil witch. Her Olde Tyme grip on Sunland Tujunga is loosening and she is having a hissy fit.

I wonder if COBRA will open their books for public scrutiny? Something smells fishy here, and it's not Terry Hakes's barefeet!

Are you kidding me? I thought Joseph Mailander was an intelligent dude, yet every one of his sources are "local color" types every town has, you know, the ones who are just a few fries short of a Happy Meal. How he got duped into relying on them as his "reliable" sources is beyond my comprehension...

Joseph Mailander is clueless, and utterly irrelevant to the Sunland-Tujunga community.
He writes opinion pieces and tries to find people to corroborate his shaky theories in order to pass them off as news.
Problem is, we ain't a buncha dumb yokels up here, and no one's buying.
