The Michael Jackson funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Sources said AEG Live, which owns the arena and the adjacent Nokia Theatre, will use both facilities and the surrounding plaza.

I just posted on the other thread how much is this going to cost a city which is on the brink of bankruptcy? They need thousands of police officers, street services, dept of transportation, etc.

Most people who even know what a "5150" is in police terminology . . . have been one at one time or another (and I don't mean they've been a cop.

Those crying about the cost of the funeral - why don't you calculate how much revenue Michael Jackson generated for this city throughout his career. Concerts, sales, employees, plastic surgery. He more than paid his dues. Not to mention how much money will be generated by the thousands of fans from throughout the world that will drop everything to be here, in L.A.

Would you have said something like that if it was Paul McCartney's funeral -- or Garth Brooks?

I don't think there would be a riot if there was a funeral for Garth Brooks or Paul McCartney because only old people would show up and old people generally don't riot.
Most of the people showing up to Michael's funeral will be young people and young people can go nuts in a situation like that.
It would probably be the same thing if it was Eminem's funeral at some arena in Minneapolis.

And I bet he put in a call to Bill Rosendahl to try to borrow a sequined glove! Will the Mayor offer to "mentor" MJ's kids, like he offered to mentor that tagger "Zoner?" That would be so COOL!!!!
Jackson's peak was in the 1980s, Higby. His career started in the 1970s with the Jackson 5.
His core fans are in their 40s and 50s, at least.
His typical lifelong fan is older than those of Garth Brooks, who peaked in the 1990s.
Jackson recorded duets with Paul McCartney when PM was on teh upsurge of a second peak. They're also contemporaries in many ways.

Agree with Higby and Petra. Jackson's fans tend to be too young to focus in on the numerous charges against him. Even CNN reported that the younger generation discovered Jackson as older folks shunned him. There is also the paparazzi factor here. I'd expect a riot if it were Britney Spears too.

I will say that my father was a huge fan of Michael Jackson.
Much as I condemn what happened to him, Denny wasn't a victim. He was shouting racial slurs when attacked. But Higby is right. MJ attracted an anti establishment crowd, black brown and white, who resent the DA, police, state authority that tried to lock MJ up. The age of those fans, and their attitude toward government and police, is potential for a riot.
It's kinda spooky when you're dealing with multiple personalities, isn't it?

I've been watching the crowds gathering at Jackson family's home the past week - which is near my commute route.
The average age is nearly 40, easily. Very few even appear to be in their 20s, and none are teenagers. They are also are majority female.
That's not exactly the profile of rioters.

There's a lot of energy in anger. If we can channel that anger into something that betters our environment, then we win.
