Dyke Day?
09-0499 CD 13 c. MOTION (GARCETTI - ROSENDAHL) relative to declaring the Dyke Day Los Angeles on June 13, 2009 a Special Event (fees and costs absorbed by the City = $3,252).
Thanks to a tipster we found out among the many special event waivers totaling nearly $75K the City Clowncil is considering today is over $3K in subsidies for something called "Dyke Day." Our tipster says:
Garcetti and Rosendahl may have some 'splainin' to do.

This is absurd in and of itself but I am particularly appalled that among the events being sponsored is DYKE DAY in East LA. I am a member of the LGBT community and feel this is UNBELIEVABLE that we work so hard to get rid of words like faggot and dyke from school yards yet we condone it here? This is disgusting!
Garcetti and Rosendahl may have some 'splainin' to do.

SHAME SHAME SHAME ON THESE MORONS. I have great gay friends and they will be absolutely insulted to know that the females are being referred to in this deragatory way. But c'mon knowing these idiots who are on council does it really surprise any of us they would be this insensitive. I'm sending this to the huge GAY groups to tell them to protest.

10:31 AM are you the same person who kept telling us word on the street was the Latinas were going to take revenge on Mayor Horndog?

This is actually the result of a misunderstanding. The "day" is in honor of Richard Dyke, the president of the Historic Highland Neighborhood Council.
Didn't Red Spot in CD14 tell you this?
What did you think it meant??
Really???
Naaaaaaah!

E-mails are being sent on this issue and the facts need to be posted. It was not Garcetti or Rosendahl who called the event Dyke Day. If you read the motion it clearly states its Vote for Equality campaign. It is the Vote for Equality people who named the day that. If you take issues you should contact them.

Mayor Villaraigosa Lost Race... in Chatsworth, Northridge
http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/Mayor-Villraigosa-Lost-Race-in-Chatsworth-Northridge.html
You have to see this billboard against Antonio
....Where eastbound Interstate 10 hits the desert at Cabazon, a few miles shy of the Palm Springs turnoff, this sign proclaims some of the locals' unhappiness with Los Angeles and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. The California Desert Coalition's website says:

Wow, AV lost in Chatsworth, Northridge.
Why don't those people up in the Valley just secede from L.A. anyway. What's to stop them?
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahha

Mayor Sam you made a mistake. It's not about Lesbians it's Dick Van Dyke Day!
Anonymous said:
What's wrong with you people?
Don't you know any dykes?
They call themselves dykes. A butch female is a dyke.
Every year they have an event called Dykes On Bikes that has Angelina jollie.s former girlfriend participating in.
Stop making something out of nothing!

So then what's next? Jan Perry and Bernie Parks present Nigger Week? And that would be okay?
Anonymous said:
So one the same post you call Mayor Sam homophobic and politically correct?

By the way Mayor Sam when is Dyke Day? so I can be sure to wish everybody a happy one.

That is all the proof we need that higby is a blantly trashy racist.

this is horrible! YES--I am a lesbian but I do not identify as a DYKE. This is a word from my youth that was terribly traumatic and although some members of the gay & lesbian community want to take ownership of it, the City Council should NOT be sponsoring the event. YES--there are black people who use the 'N' word and I'm sure we'd never see that on a council agenda, but not ALL black people like that word, and that is the point. The Council should IMMEDIATELY make some changes here

I guess it's one of those words that only lesbians can use. Someday we'll be calling it the d word.

If anyone has an issue with "Dyke Day" they need to e-mail the Vote for Equality people who are the ones who asked Garcetti to put a motion to get a special event waiver. I called the Gay and Lesbian Center and they had no idea about this day.

Like Dyke Marches across the country Dyke Day LA is about reclaiming the word dyke and celebrating the Dyke/Lesbian/Queer community. Dyke Day L.A. is a day in the park for all self-identified dykes and allies, including gay families, transgender dykes, and dykes of all ages. The mission of Dyke Day LA is to create an inclusive space that brings together the past, present, and future of our east side Los Angeles dyke community. This day in the park will allow people of all backgrounds to connect with each other and with community organizations in celebration of our eclectic queer family. Vote for Equality is the sponsor of Dyke Day LA, but not organizing the event.

Dyke is a proud ancient word (from a greek goddess & a celtic queen) that got turned into an insult. But instead of staying insulted we reclaimed the word & we use it with a sense of fun & pride, and that just takes the negative power right out of it.
Haven't you heard of 'Dykes on Bikes'? (even the US Trademark office let them patent the name after agreeing with testimony that the word's meaning had changed - as words do!)
