The Countdown to Failure Begins

The folks over at Wonkette have begun the Sarah Palin Premature Withdrawl Watch (link to yesterday's Watch Day 1) in earnest, with many commenters adding their guesses as to when Sarah Palin makes her less-than-triumphant failed Veep candidacy-return back to the frozen tundra of Alaska and the ever looming Troopergate scandal as well as the AIP nuttiness ("Alaska First -- Alaska Always!"), and of course, the continued care of her Down Syndrome infant, and the impending birth of her first grandchild.

At least this time while flying back home, she won't be leaking amniotic fluid all the way, commenters snark.

John McCain is being seriously questioned on just how thoroughly Mrs. Palin was vetted. No one in Alaska recalls being asked anything about the Governor. A New York Times story reports the vetting team arrived only one day before John McCain announced that she would be his running mate. Apparently, my 7 year old daughter and I were able to do a more thorough vetting on the internet in ten minutes than Mr. Culvahouse and company were able to do in a day.

Ah yes, the lovely internets, where we found this disturbing picture of the GOP VP pick. (scroll down to see a picture of a slaughtered grizzly bear posed lovingly behind Mrs. Palin)

We love Joseph Mailander for reminding us of just how anti-bear Sarah Palin really is.

Also coming to the forefront of discussion is McCain's knowledge of Sarah Palin's involvement in the Alaska Independent Party; a political group which promotes state succession and other fruity ideas. Here's a fun quote from the head fruit of the AIP:

"I’m an Alaskan, not an American. I’ve got no use for America or her damned institutions.” - Joe Vogler, founder of the Alaskan Independence Party

Seems Mrs. Palin's support of abstinence-only sex education isn't working so well for a few teenage girls up there in Alaska. According to a report on Teen Pregnancy by the State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (pdf file), no research indicates that abstinence-only (also known as abstinence-only-until-marriage programs) are effective at reducing rates of teen pregnancy or birth. In fact, the study goes on to say, that despite the evidence that prevention education which includes condom and/or birth control use is more effective, abstinence-only programs are receiving the only encouragement and increases in funding from the federal government. More from the report:

According to a survey of American’s attitudes on sexuality education, more than 90% of adults support abstinence being included as a topic in sexuality education for high school students. However, 70% of American adults oppose provision of federal law that allocates over half a billion dollars for abstinence-only-until-marriage education but prohibits use of the funds for information on contraception for the prevention of disease and unintended pregnancy.

Somebody needs to get with the program. *cough*memaw sarah*cough*

Please... make a donation to these fine people up in Alaska. They need all the help they can get.

Gee, I didn't have to read a quarter of this before I knew it was Valley Dull's post.

Girl, you are so concerned that the mom's with multiple children, ain pregnant teenage daughters will identify with this woman, and go that way.

Don't discount that MOST of America lives outside of L.A. and New York. There are a lot of soccer & hockey moms in this country, and conservatives, who back her.

You sound very worried just by your opening two paragraphs.

More bad news today about Sarah circulating all over the internet.

"""[Former Wasilla mayor John Stein] says that as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. "She asked the library how she could go about banning books," he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. "The librarian was aghast." The librarian, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn't be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire her for not giving "full support" to the mayor.

Here's one of those news reports from 1997:

City librarian Mary Ellen Emmons [Baker] will stay, but Police Chief Irl Stambaugh is on his own, Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin announced Friday. The decision came one day after letters signed by Palin were dropped on Stambaugh's and Emmon's desks, telling them their jobs were over as of Feb. 13. """

Stay tuned

Don Quixote you are a great thinker.

Of course people Palin fired are going to have a beef with her.

Alaskan government has been notoriously corrupt since statehood, mainly controlled by three families.

In fact, it makes LA City Hall look like Common Cause.

Palin got in there and fired a lot of people, cut off their perks (she even sold the governor's private plane), cut her own salary and put an end to the party.

No wonder they're sliming her.

And the racism/classism/elitism/sexism coming from liberals is unbelievable.

She also rejected the "Bridge to nowhere", saying that if Alaskans wanted the bridge, they'd build it themselves.

And, when the revenues from oil and gas income went way over projections, she RETURNED $1,200.00to every Alaskan. Imagine one of our political leaders here in LA/California doing THAT!!!

They should attack this woman with great care; the word "backfire" jumps into my head.

Let's talk about something else, shall we? Yes, lets.

(Strokes chin thoughtfully) Sots, have you considered something? And that is that Republicans are not perfect and Democrats are not brilliant? (Looks confused) Or is it Democrats aren't perfect and Republicans aren't brilliant? (Shakes head) Oh bugger, the lot of them are either dull witted or slack jawed. (Whispers) Just like the House of Lords, savvy?

(Clears throat) As I was saying, neither side has yet to be nominated for sainthood. Yes, as an outsider looking in, if you will, I would point out that you sots have missed one particular and rather critical factor in all of this; all the players are simply human. (Grins) Trust evolution to level the playing field, savvy?

(Frowns) But where does that leave the sots who call themselves Clowncil? (Thinks for a moment) Right! They are either non-human or deity. (Speaks confidentially) We hear that Signore Garcetti is the latter and that His Has Been Nibbs merely aspires to be. But then again, aspiration is often the last gasp, savvy?

Good post summer morning to all!!

My bubbly buddy "Valley Doll" must be auditioning for anchor position at MSNBC or CNN.

On the subject of Palin's daughter, one may want to read this e-mail to Hugh Hewitt.

Hugh –

There couldn’t be a clearer difference between conservatives and liberals than this one…

Obama…

“If my daughter makes a mistake, I don’t want her punished with a baby”

Palin…

“As [our daughter] faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.”

(also… "Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family.”)

When I, myself, became pregnant in college, my soon-to-be mother in law (a hard-core liberal Democrat who had openly encouraged me to have un-married sex with her son) expressed her “disappointment” in both of us – and immediately pushed for an abortion. My own mother (a sex-before-marriage-is-sin Catholic) immediately comforted me, affirmed her love for me and said, “There’s always room in our family for another baby.” My husband and I have been JOYFULLY married 21 years and have 4 amazing kids…. What an beautiful gift of love my mother gave me that day!

Babies...Punishment vs. Love. I think I’ll take love.

So much for the party of tolerance...

It is rare that we are witnesses to the kind of smear campaign launched against Sarah Palin by Democrats, the left, and the media. The shocking virulence with which the attack has been conducted takes one aback with its audacity and nauseating hypocrisy.

The goal of the other side is nothing less than forcing John Mccain to withdraw Palin's name. Or failing that, making things so unpleasant for Palin that she asks to be let go. On both scores, the left has mounted an enormously vigorous challenge to Palin, going so far as to overthrow their own long held political positions on such issues as women's rights and abortion in order to attack her. The smear about Palin's child actually being her daughter's is largely laid to rest - except for those who now insist that Governor Palin was wearing a "fat suit" to fake the pregnancy pictures we saw on various websites.

Those people are beyond hope. But it is amazing how smoothly the left transitioned from that theme to other smears. Now the battle cry is that she is some kind of extremist for belonging to an organization called the Alaska Independence Party. Marc Ambinder debunks that attack quite cleanly by pointing out that the AIP is an accepted part of the Alaskan political landscape and is hardly an "extremist" organization anyway.

Through it all, Sarah Palin has maintained her composure, trying to shield her daughter while going on with the mission at hand - trying to get John McCain elected president. She has handled this very personal yet public situation extremely well.

Unless the left has something more damaging than what they've come up with so far, Palin will be on the ticket in November. Most of what they present as disqualifying evidence is so twisted with bias and outright falsehoods that they are easily tossed aside.

McCain has done his best to run interference for his running mate while Barack Obama has made the statement that the American people should understand that what is going on in the Palin household is private and should have no impact on the presidential race. While this is welcome from Mr. Obama, perhaps a statement asking his supporters to cease and desist in their rancid smear attacks on Palin might also have been a nice gesture.

The anticipation of Palin's speech is already building here and by tomorrow night, the convention should be more than primed to hear her speak. I predict that the Excel Center roof will have trouble staying on during her address.

But to be vindictive and small minded and to fire or threaten to fire someone in government because they won't fire your sisters husband or ex husband because of some divorce court legality?
Hey if Palin fired the ex cop for illegal moose hunting or tasering his 11 year old stepson that might work, but such was not the case.
(Say what goes on in Alaskan Governors familys anyway?)

And Holy Jesus, Mary, and Joseph! Firing or threatening to fire the police chief and some poor Librarian because she correctly refused to remove or ban books that some religious nut didn't like?
Christ Almighty it sounds like the making of a Frank Capra movie staring Jimmy Stewart, and Donna Reed as the meek yet staunch Librarian refusing some Nazi order to burn books in Norway or Holland in WW2.

I just heard on the news that Palins Speech tonight at the GOP convention has been canceled, so I guess ol John has had enough of it too. Maybe he's a closet liberal after all huh Mayor Sam Higby?

So basically, what I'm seeing here is you all can smear with the best of them, and hey, it's all right. But if someone reports (not smears) what's being said around the internet (with linkage, babes) and you're all freaked the hell out. I love it.

Give me an effing break you hypocrites. You are so pathetic.

And as the mother of a daughter, I agree with Barack Obama. The thought of her being forced to have a child she was neither ready, nor willing to have is an abomination. But then again, I plan to teach my daughter all the glorious aspects of her body, and how to take care of each aspect, including full knowledge of contraception, how to get it, and assurances that no matter what... she can always come to me. I'm going to teach her that sex isn't bad -- but is to be enjoyed responsibly, when she's physically and emotionally ready for it.

And above all, I will teach her that getting married to the "fuckin' redneck" (how Ms. Palin's future son-in-law self describes himself. She must be so proud) who knocked you up isn't such a hot idea. But whatever.

This would make the best reality show ever. Better than Britney Spears and her brood. Better than the crazy ass Lohans and their brood.

ABC News reports:
Is the McCain campaign afraid of an 'October surprise' involving vice-presidential pick Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska?

The Alaska state senator running an investigation of Gov. Palin says the McCain campaign is using stall tactics to prevent him from releasing his final report by Oct. 31, four days before the November election.

"It's likely to be damaging to the Governor," said Senator Hollis French, a Democrat, appointed the project manager for a bi-partisan State Senate Legislative Counsel Committee investigation of claims that Palin abused her office to get the Alaska public safety commissioner, Walt Monegan, fired.

An Anchorage Daily News story suggests that Palin's lawyer is helping stall the investigation.

The big question would seem to be McCain and his judgment, whether he understood what he was doing/what was involved when making his selection of a VP running mate???

As for Palin, whether her daughter is pregnant outside of marriage has nothing to do with being vice pres. of the U.S., but, on the other hand, is this the best choice that McCain could have made? did he really find out much about her before making this choice?

And a reminder to everyone about Thomas Eagleton, who was forced to withdraw as VP candidate after revelations that he had undergone psychiatric treatment. A withdrawal is not unheard of....

And as a proud member of the "teenage love child" club. (my mother was I think 16 when I was born) I got no beef with the youngster who swallowed the watermelon seed, hell it happens all the time and I wish her and her baby well.
The issue here is that McCain didn't know about it, and I don't care what the spin is, you don't make an announcement like that the day of the GOP convention, they would have made it public as soon as Palin was picked or they would have waited until after the election or convention. (the news only broke because it was all over the internet for a week),
The fact that Palin either didn't tell him the whole scenario and lied, or that his staff didn't bother to vett Palin properly, or even worse that someone on McCains staff has their own agenda they want to push, ie; the religious right, anti womens choice, prayer in schools, teaching "creationism", not teaching sex education but sexual abstinence (oh boy! talk about getting your ass bit), anti gay rights such as same sex marriage, and the whole slew of screwball, right wing, evangelist agitprop these corn pone preachers are trying to shove up our collective ass's.
So besides the ever growing list of negative sound bites Palin is providing, the frightening scenario of a President (McCain) not in touch with reality or not caring, or even how his aides (see Rove) are actually setting policy on thier own and riding roughshod over the Constitution and Bill of Rights (the Wasilla book burning attempt by Palin), is the real issue.
Is McCain going to be a real hands on President that's involved in the important issues for the country or is he going to live up to his nickname (McSame) and like Bush let a bunch of maniacs and anti democratic forces run the country the way they see fit, while John shoots craps in Vegas or hangs out with his Navy buddies on Coronado Island?

Who's on first? Oops I mean who's in charge ? This is the issue.

Jane Swift, the former acting governor of Massachusetts, hopes voters will start focusing on Sarah Palin's record as governor of Alaska and stop focusing on questions about her family.

But Swift is not surprised that, first, "folks are obsessing with the personal aspects of her life."

Swift, an early John McCain supporter, is protective about his surprise pick for running mate, especially when it comes to the media frenzy over Palin's family.

"I wish people showed more discretion with me," said Swift.

The focus on Palin's 17-year-old, pregnant, unmarried daughter "is so far beyond the pale of what's appropriate," she said.

To Swift, the harsh spotlight on Palin has a familiar feel. Swift was pregnant with twins when, as lieutenant governor, she took over for Paul Cellucci when he left the governor's office before his term was up. Her personal life was criticized and her qualifications questioned. Maternity, not policy, defined Swift's stint on Beacon Hill. Her use of aides to babysit and a state helicopter to fly home were covered as major scandals. Her marriage to a contractor, not a power broker, was another favorite media topic.

"The public reaction is different to women in executive positions. There's a real gender difference," said Swift.

Swift is right, said Barbara Lee, who runs a Massachusetts-based foundation that promotes women for political office and conducts research on women seeking executive office. "Women are scrutinized to a different degree than men. People are always worried about whether a woman is up to the job."

If abstinence doesn't prevent pregnancy, then where's your proof? Abstinence means "refrains from," "non-participatory," etc. Not one person who does not engage in sexual relations becomes pregnant, both present-day, and historically (except one, but that was Mary, of the House of David).

Therefore, if a woman does not engage in sexual relations, the female doesn't get pregnant, artificial insemination notwithstanding.

Well so is lobatomy.

I think V.D. had one of those already.

If a conservative would of treated a VP candidate with just a tenth of the hatred V.D. has displayed they would be called cave men and knuckle draggers, but since it is a liberal they are called progressives.

The liberals you see can't stand to see another persons free speech. They like free speech, only if it is liberal speech. Anything else and they call it hate speech and want it outlawed.

Reminds me of Sarah Brady shouting to the hills about gun control and then buys her underage son a rifle. She should of been prosecuted for a straw purchase of a firearm. But since she is on the liberals side she is given a pass.

That is why liberals are hypocrites. They hate killing animals yet they eat and wear them.
