PERB Rejects LAUSD Request For Injunction To Stop Planned Teacher "Late Sign-In" Tomorrow

children protesting candy bar price increase, May 1, 1947.

An LAUSD attempt at blocking tomorrow's slated "Late Sign-In/Protest Walk" failed as the Public Employees Relations Board (PERB) turned down LAUSD’s request to go to court to prohibit UTLA from their planned action tomorrow.

Many schools have sent out email blasts, or pre-recorded phone blasts to LAUSD parents informing them that they expect all children in school during the time of the action. Parents, however, have expressed a desire to keep their children with them to stand along side their teachers in a show of support. Teachers are also encouraging parents to talk about the walk with their children and many support the decision of parents to have children participate.

As a parent, I plan to have my 7 year-old daughter walk along side both me and her teacher. It's never too early to instill a sense of civic duty and responsibility to speak out by participating in acts of peaceful civil disobedience. Yay Kid Power! I'm just hoping her fellow First Graders don't get all militant and crazy and the riot police need to be sent in to control them.

While not entirely a fan of UTLA (I've seen how the most horrible, traumatizing teachers are protected and am not happy with that system), I will, however support them in this action tomorrow.

I'm also excited at the prospect of parents coming together and talking and planning what the next steps for our school should be.

At our elementary school, we'll be losing a kinder classroom; our wonderful Literacy and Math Coaches are not coming back in the fall (man, those two staff cuts hurt more than you'll ever know...) and if more children enroll in the summer, we face the possibility of grade level-split classes (eg. a K-1st grade split, or a 1st grade - 2nd grade split).

The true "neighborhood" schools which are highest performing, non Title I, are being hammered the hardest with the budget cuts.

Way to punish the Shining Stars of the district.

But don't worry ... the parents of LAUSD are just beginning to learn how to howl, and hopefully, tomorrow will give them just a taste of what we can do when we come together for a greater cause, and for the parents of LAUSD, there is no greater cause than our children.

See you on the "Late Sign-In" picket line tomorrow morning!

Please send coffee.

What an unreasonably long, self-indulged post.

It shouldn't be THIS long and push OTHER stories down so far, and you should stop using personal-indulgences like referencing your daughter.

I appreciate the effort, though. Yet, you didn't explain the acronym!

So kids learn that when teachers get mad, they get to walk with Mommy at school instead of sitting in school. And I'm SURE the details of the issue are clear as mud.

Screw UTLA, the teachers are fighting tooth and nail against Charters, even though it's the LAW, passed by the State Superior Court over a decade ago.

They and LAUSD, whose Board Members like Marlene Kantor and Julie "Big 50's hair" Korenstein, want to have all the money and control and power themselves, even though they've failed miserably.

The westside, hillside communities and areas like Chatsworth -- whose excellent LEAP charter was forced to close due to devious tactics by the LAUSD Charter Liason, as well as problems with raising and managing their own funds -- have NO LAUSD resources, which all go into the poor areas (whose kids are even in our schools and made them unsafe and not of the quality we're paying for) are being made to pay TAXES WITHOUT REPRESENTATION. Even when parents open charters, and are by law entitled to our share of taxes for these schools, the fascists at LAUSD and UTLA defy the law.

Half the kids in LAUSD are afraid at school for their physical safety, and that amount drop out.

AS you noted, LAUSD is even cutting out childcare permits, to try to keep more warm bodies in failing schools with declining enrollment.

LAUSD Board AND UTLA teachers SHOULD BE SUED FOR MASSIVE CLASS ACTION TAX FRAUD, DEFYING COURT ORDERS AND IMPRISONING STUDENTS IN DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENTS.

4:51 p.m. So much misinformation in that post I don't even know where to start. So I won't!

4:51 Couldn't have said it better myself.

And Valley Doll, why pick tomorrow to walk with your daughter in protest? The real budget battle has been going on for thirty years and its been between the school sites and the district along with the UTLA.

5:22/VD: You won't because you can't.

It's all facts on the ground, and your shilling for the selfish fascists at UTLA and LAUSD is obvious.

Law suit is a decade overdue, and I hope the damages are SO great, LAUSD will finally do what it should have decades ago: give up break up.

4:13 Which acronym didn't I explain? LAUSD? UTLA? If you don't know what those stand for, wait ... how long have you been living in LA? If you're referring to PERB, take your no-reading comprehension-skills-butt back to school.

4:51 MY kid is learning that when the District, the City, the State mismanage things so horrifically, we need to start doing something about it instead of "sitting". By the way, some schools will be herding the kids who are in school during the Walk onto their playgrounds for supervised play (supervision by administration and aides). Little Miss Valley Thang is missing no classroom instruction by walking with me.

She's also learning that it's okay to get together with people who feel the same way you do, and want to complain about it peacefully. We're mad that there's no freakin' paper to run off homework on, and even if you're lucky enough to find a handful, good luck finding a copier that works on any given day. We're mad that we're losing two of our extremely wonderful and caring teaching staff who only added to the children's success in the classroom. We're mad that one kinder class is being cut, and that we can't get childcare permits because of it. We're mad; just plain mad, and if our teachers want to shout about the horrible teaching conditions that they have to deal with, and which are only going to get worse, I'm all for it. I see the bullshit they have to put up with every single day. Tomorrow is more about their beefs than UTLA's beefs.

What I also like about tomorrow is that it's giving us parents a chance to cut our protesting teeth. And maybe, if enough of us get mad, we can take on (or down) LAUSD. But you gotta start somewhere, and for alot of parents who've never been "community activists" in any way, tomorrow hopefully will give them a taste of what we can do collectively.

Why am I walking tomorrow? Because now I know things I didn't know coming into LAUSD ten years ago. Tomorrow, for me, isn't so much about outcome as it is coming out; an official "coming out" as organized and mad-as-hell parents. I would think you'd encourage us to get this ball rolling and either fix this piece of shit district, or nuke it from orbit.

5:30 ^^^^^ please refer to the above paragraph.

5:33 I'm not 5:22, thnx.

413 can go to hell.

This proves that the LAUSD should and must be broken up. Each school should be the responsibility of the community it is in. End the downtown bureaucracy now.

You're just the kind of rube LAUSD loves.

Nothing is ever their fault, just give them more money! It for the children!!!!!

Never mind the millions they waste. Where's your story about what they ARE spending precious resources on?

Never mind your daughter has to compete with foreign nationals taking her spot and using her services you pay for.

We throw good money after bad and they just want more as the schools suffer.

Put down the kookaid and try and LAUSD AUDIT.

1:01 Again, no reading comprehension. We're in worse trouble than I thought. Rube LAUSD loves? They love parents who are disgusted with them? Which part of "we want to take on (or down) LAUSD" didn't you understand? Please re-read my comment above,Dork.

Seems someone needs to lay off the "kookaid", and it ain't me.
