JM, Hillary crushed? 2.2.08

Joseph Mailander
a guy in laelsewhereemail

It crowns a perfect week for him in California's Latino community: La opción demócrata es Barack Obama, the La Opinión lead editorial says. Hillary was ahead by seventeen points in California, but after endorsements from LAT, SEIU, Maria Elena, and now the region's leading Spanish daily, you have to think that Obama is in striking distance, and closing very, very hard; you're also left wondering why the Mayor appeared powerless to stop that momentum.

The Downtown News publishes an op-ed by Yuval Bar-Zemer of Linear City (Toy and Biscuit company lofts) that takes the City's Planning Department to task for tinkering with industrial zoning downtown.

Daily News has a cool tool: local, searchable candidate donations. Try your favorite City lobbyist's name first.

You'd think it was a young person's issue, but....Prop S, the sole citywide issue on Tuesday's ballot, certainly hasn't overheated the City's general interest blogs. I guess everyone's dying to pay $120 extra a year in tax for every wireless gadget they own.

A funny and touching play is playing in the amiable church basement at Prospect and Rodney known as the Mt. Hollywood Theater: Last Tango with Marlon. Written by Fletcher Rhoden, who knew more than a few of those Hollywood Squares as a kid, and draws from some of that too. Raf Mauro as the ghost of Wally Cox is a constant delight. Notable aside at wikipedia: "Cox and Brando remained very close friends for the rest of Cox's life, and Brando is reported to have kept Cox's ashes in his bedroom and conversed with them nightly." Bet you didn't recall that Wally Cox and Marlon Brando were childhood friends, and maintained the friendship all the way up until Cox's death in the early 1970's. Brando's ashes were ultimately scattered with Cox's.

Somebody please post Yuval Bar-Zemer's editorial by the water cooler at the Planning Department. Maybe someone will read it and get some inspiration!

Strange how a little Midwest town could produce two great actors and thinkers. And the fact that they were friends all their lives is a great story.
As a young kid my family never missed "Mr. Peepers" with Wally Cox who was so intelligent and insightful as an actor, a truly unforgettable character.

And maybe Marlon Brando is the greatest actor this country has ever produced, the scene's of Brando as "Joey" agonizing with Eva Marie Saint over the issue of what's right and wrong in his tough NY world in "On The Waterfront", his emotional scene at his dead (suicide) wife's coffin in "Last Tango In Paris",
The wisdom and eloquent thought he displayed as the illiterate Zapata in "Viva Zapata", and the crowning jewel of his acting career as Don Corleone in the "Godfather"
incredible career and thank god we have it all on film that we can enjoy forever.
Good post JM!

I love that scene with the coffin too, maybe better than anything else in Tango. He really breaks down completely, and you can see he did so quite often.

The author's dad directed Hollywood Squares, so there's some good stuff in the play on Cox's own demons too. But I really couldn't believe it when I read that Cox died in 1973---I had no idea it was so long ago.

I remember him in the pilot Mission Impossible episode, as the ace safe-cracker. Everyone was stunned to see how fine a dramatic actor he could be---I think most people tuned in just to see him do something serious. 1966!

I would love to see Marlon Brando play the part of a crazed cyber stalker with multiple personalities. Marlo Brando could use his great acting skills to accurately portray a loney man looking for attention in his imginary cyer-world. It would be fascinating to see into the deranged mind of someone who craves any attention on the internet.

From "LA TIMES IN SPANISH",

The Democratic Party arrives at the California primary with a historic choice between two extraordinary candidates. We believe that of the two, Senator Barack Obama represents fundamental change in a campaign in which "change" has become a central theme. Obama’s approach to immigration and his inspiring vision are what the country need to break through the current feeling of political malaise.
There is no doubt that Senator Hillary Clinton would be an excellent president if elected. She is capable, competent, disciplined, and hard working. She has shown herself to be a talented legislator and is on the right side of the major issues. Her plan for universal health care is one example of the courageous initiatives she has proposed as a candidate. And it would be wonderful to elect the country&*#39;s first woman president.

She has garnered significant Latino support from such influential and high profile national leaders as Raúl Yzaguirre, Henry Cisneros and Antonio Villaraigosa. She has worked tirelessly over many years to represent the best interests of Latinos and her personal commitment has been well-documented throughout this campaign.

Yet, this is a historic moment and tremendous skills and experience are not enough to inspire a feeling of renewal in our country after eight long years of George W. Bush.

As well, we were disappointed with her calculated opposition to driver’s licenses for the undocumented, which contrasts markedly from the forceful argument in support made by Obama. We understand that this is an extremely controversial issue but we believe there is only one right position and it is that of the senator from Illinois. And, while both senators support comprehensive immigration reform, only Obama has committed to bringing forward new legislation during his first year in office.

It is this commitment to the immigration issue which drove Obama to condemn the malicious lies made during the immigration debate, to understand the need for driver’s licenses, and to defend the rights of undocumented students by co-authoring the DREAM Act. The senator has demonstrated character by maintaining his position despite the hostile political climate.

At the same time, there are not huge differences between the two Democractic candidates on most of the major issues. Thus, vision makes the difference! Obama offers an inclusive message of hope that addresses our country&*#39;s historic moment. He has a conciliatory style that can reverse the vicious cycle of rancor which has dominated Washington over these past decades and has paralyzed its ability to come together on major decisións.

We need a leader today that can inspire and unite America again around its greatest possibilities. Barack Obama is the right leader for the time. We know that he is not as well known among our community and while he has the support of Maria Elena Durazo, Senator Gil Cedillo and others he comes to the Latino community with less name recognition. Nevertheless, it is Obama who deserves our support.

By deciding between a woman or an African American as their presidencial nominee, the Democrats are making history. Barack Obama has the sensibilities of a man from humble beginnings raised in a multicultural home. He is the best option for a truly visionary change.

I agree, It would have been great for Marlon Brando do a male version of Sybil. With Marlon Brando's great acting skills it would have made a great psycho drama and the added twist of the Internet and imaginary characters would add a modern twist to the movie. I would have the cyber-stalker inviting his imaginary friends out for breakfast, maybe a bowl of menudo.
