Friday Hotsheet, Open 4 a.m.

What's the big deal about opening at 4 a.m.? I've been up at that hour for years.

I keep wondering what's going to happen to Angelino Heights once they open up those streets they're currently laying down. That community is yuppie or worse at the top of the hill and tenement or worse at the bottom. And with traffic coming out of downtown what it is, you have to think that it's going to occur to more than one commuter to take a shortcut across those newly-connected old streets once they open up.
Calling Cap'n Jack: Still, the neighborhood's not without its enticements---the other day walking on Patton I saw what appeared to be a wrapped-up yellow submarine (above). Maybe Captain Jack Sparrow can tell us what gives here.

I overheard the other night that Richard Meruelo wants to develop a 12-storey condo tower in Boyle Heights someplace near the coming Metro stop. With the eminent domain decision on Taylor Yard going against him, it wasn't a good week for the Meruelo hegemony. So good luck with that, and let us know how it works out for you.

I'm admiring the Daily News local news coverage more all the time---and it started off high---but they should continue to question every single line of email that is sent to them by a City publicist/Council office. Or do they really think that 250,000 people are going to watch the Hollywood Santa Parade? Here's what 250,000 people in LA look like, and you just aren't going to see that in Hollywood.

Oh, and here's an idea I heard: Alan Mittlestaedt for Daily News City editor. How does that work for you? I think he's too libertarian (and not moderate Republican enough) for general Valley tastes, but...read his 10 questions for Ace Smith if you doubt he's up to it.

What does this mean exactly, Joe?
Democrats don't speak English?
Only Republicans read the Daily News?
What?!

Alan Mittelstaedt is a sarcastic wit, in his own mind at least. Always spinning conspiracy theories about the Times, hates the Mayor and anyone who ever shook his hand -- if he does take over, more than half of City Hall will shun the DN for interviews or anything.
Plus his left/libertarian bent won't work for the largely working class Valley people who read the Daily. He and they couldn't be more opposite. For example, while the working class, blue collar people are naturally always against more taxes and suspicious of government, they are also suspcious of the "intellectual elites" on the westside and downtown, which is the world Alan Mittelstaedt likes to infiltrate and think he's a part of, at least as a nuisance. He has less than nothing in common with the average reader of the DN, probably has contempt for them, sees them as redneck fools along with their basic demands: good local schools, not ethnic and social gerrymandering which drags down their kids' education; pro cops and anti illegals; anger at the leftists who control City Hall. Anyone who reads the reader blogs at DN gets a sense of the "average reader" pretty quick.
Mittelstaedt thinks City Hall is too right wing, he's an old leftie who probably champions people like Janice Hahn, Alarcon and the old- style black leadership -- could you find someone more NOT in tune with the Valley majority readership of DN?

Joe you're right, anyone who thinks the parade will get 250K spectators is on crack. Last year it had 15,000 tops. That's what caused the Hollywood Chamber to drop the event; with that level of attendance it makes it hard to get the advertising sponsorship needed to cover costs.
Unless Tom LeBong thinks that good ole Bob Barker is going to draw 235,000 new folks it's not going to happen.
And remember the reason for LeBong to dip into our cash strapped city treasury to the tune of several hundred thousand dollars was 1) to bail out his friend who was paid to produce the parade for the Chamber and 2) so he could masturbate his ego and ride in a parade.

Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen (removes hat, bows low with flourish and puts hat back on again):
We, if you will, do not all live in a yellow submarine. You must be thinking of a certain donator and developer that believes a good development is the same as sardines packed into a tin can, savvy?
And a very hearty halloo to she who runs a tight ship. And NO, we'll not take your sister as ballast, thank you. See you on the 'morrow in the Harbour.

If you do not believe in conspiracies you have a tunnel vision. The problem with our society is we believe what our parents, churches, teachers and government tell us to believe and if we start questioning we are harshly reprimanded, made fun of etc. It is much easier and comfortable to be a “yes” person, this is the position most people take. As our governor Arnold says “Ninety five percent of the people in the world need to be told what to do and how to behave.” To see beyond our tunnel vision is very scary, we have to sacrifice our sacred cows and our false security. Very few have the courage to take that step.

Alan M's conspiracy was proven false by subsequent circumstances, as some commenters posted on the linked site and elsewhere. He's spinning to make HIS political bias clear, and if you knew anything about what he said and who he is, you'd have something to say besides a bland generalization. You didn't even read his argument or the rebuttals, but assume one writer spouting off at the mouth has the inside track.
It's just as dumb to believe in anyone's conspiracy theories they ramble off at any time based on their own disproven speculation, as to think there never are any... But you're proving the danger of the gullible believing any rumor - mongering and gossip as fact.

What does this mean exactly, Joe?

Sorry if it's elliptical. It means that the Daily News is an English-language newspaper.
As such, it competes along the Boulevard and south of it with the New York Times (popular with English-speaking Democrats). And it competes elsewhere in the Valley the Los Angeles Times (popular with English-speaking Angelenos over age 55).
There are also a lot of Spanish speakers in the Valley---it's tough for the Daily News to reach these.
So how does it best compete? In my opnion, it best competes the way Bob Hertzberg best competed, the way the Valley almost became it's own city: via championing moderate Republican political positions.
The broader point is, it's not so easy to pick an optimal City editor for the Daily News.

Joe, if you're looking for a moderate Republican to edit the DN to suit the Valley, Alan M is not the man, what a laugh. He's lefter coast than Bill Rosendahl, of the endless motions re: things the council has no jurisdiction over, like gays in the military, pulling the military out of Iraq altogether, whatever.
They might like someone like Greig Smith, except Smith was on the side of Bernie in justifying trying to swipe the trash tax for cops under the guise of fiscal responsibility, and the DN really, really got steamed over that one.
Gee, so no one under 55 reads the L A Times, but they're all reading the New York Times? That's why no one knows what's going on in L A, because if you're not a Republican or working class from the Valley, nor a democrat over 55 in the city, you never know what's going on in L A?
Fact is, most NC's and HOA's consist of people well over 55, but they often oppose the L A Times' positions.
Younger people also don't often watch the evening news, so where do you think they get their news, from LAist? Most political blogs also seem filled with an older crowd.
But I'm pretty sure the L A Times has more online young readers.
It seems more Latinos read their papers and watch their media, even the illiterates, since it's broken down for them with editorializing integrated right into the story.
Hey, nice spaceship over there in Angeleno Heights, quite a story too.

So Sam and Joe, are you placing bets on how many show up somewhere, somewhere between 15 and 250,000?
With so many streets closed off and various papers giving parking/ towing warnings, they're not making it easy.
They advise taking the metro, which would make sense -- leave the car at a lot somewhere on the route. But too few have ever taken the metro or will bother getting a map to figure out how to do it. I'll bet a twenty they get at least 150,ooo tho.
If nothing else, Hispanic families will come out for a free day.

10:11, reverse racist idiot. Wanna bet who shows up? They go anywhere free with their huge, huge families, you can't go to the beach anymore without being surrounded by them with their fat woman and loud radios. You can't deny reality, dufus -- pathetic how you keep piping up with your tiny squeaky voice, you must work for Alarcon or Huizar. Whose districts are paradigms of everyone's ideals of suburbia.
