Toilet Water?
The idea of "toilet to tap," that is recycling waste water (from your toilet and other places) back into water that could be used for bathing, drinking, watering your lawn, whatever is back. However local politicians who want you to drink your own toilet water apparently think that they can use more water than anyone else and come up with asinine reasons why.
You may remember that the City had proposed this gross idea several years ago but quickly dropped it upon the outrage of citizens and Council Members from the San Fernando Valley.
The original plan called for waste water to be filtered as it seeps through the ground. It would be sent to homes in the North Hollywood area, Studio City, Van Nuys, Sherman Oaks and Pacoima.
As this plan will probably be foisted on residents of those communities first residents there should call on Council Members Wendy Greuel, Tom LaBonge, Jack Weiss and Richard Alarcon to oppose such a stinky move.

"This is human waste," said Lori Dinkin, president of the Valley Village Homeowners Association. "I'm very uneasy about that."

It would spur sales of bottle water, just as people are learning to stop wasting all that plastic and money.

You mean all that bottled water that really comes from tap water and not some mystical mountain spring which can supply all the plastic water bottles of the world.

Wow... talk about talking out of your ASS.
Wastewater for irrigation IS ALREADY being used in cities across the country. It is heavily filtered and tends to be safer to drink than even regular tap water. The military has been using the same technology for nearly a decade.
Yea the idea SOUNDS gross, but if you anti-science nuts get your head out of your ass for 2 minutes you'd see it is actually quite a good idea.

Have a glass of shit my dear.
Remember to drink 8 glasses a day, and more on those terrible hot days. Use straws, add ice and a lemon – Make your shit glass of water feel like a treat. YUM.

How about a solar doghouse for Fido? And while you're browsing, what about some recycled pet tags and whole-wheat animal treats?

They recycle water for drinking in numerous places in California, the U.S. and the world and people are just fine with it. Only in L.A., where luddites and know-nothings apparently dictate public policy, do people react like Mayor Sam does.
Water recycling is exactly what nature does. "Toilet-to-tap" is what we already have; this would just speed it up. Get over it, and get used to it.

Having water shortages? Traffic problems? Density problems? Gee, just imagine how many problems would drastically diminish or just go away if they got rid of those huge numbers of criminals who SHOULD NOT BE HERE SUCKING UP OUR RESOURCES - THE ILLEGALS!!!

Anybody remember when there were no sewers in the Valley? We dumped our untreated "stuff" in cesspools, where it would be filtered naturally and percolate into the aquifer, where we pump that water for drinking.
Using treated water for irrigation makes sense. First, it IS treated, and second, the plants use the water.
Imported water for L.A. is a limited resource. Watch your water bills. We've had increases the last two years and more are proposed starting in January.
If we were really smart, we'd use treated water to recharge the aquifer. That day will come.

If we could get our midget mayor to cut his water use that would help right there.

Sam, you are out to lunch on this one. "Toilet to tap" was coined by the spinmeisters over at Arrowhead and friends.
It is safer and cleaner than what we have now, but you right wingnuts are having difficulty with evolution, wouldn't expect you to understand this one.

I will comment on the water, but first I have to address the complex density, infrastructure shortage, illegal alien and traffic problem (cause they're all connected).
here's the breakdown: quite plainly the illegals come here to work and make money. no argument. if there is a way to prevent developers and anyone in fact from employing them in any kind of construction, will that not put the brakes on the condo conversions? because I think the real problem is that white America has become dependent on the cheaper labor, and is unwilling now to give up the PROFIT at the bottom line.
its nice to see ICE deport that woman, because she too was doing exactly the kind of thing that kills it for everyone. corrupting the system with fraud. so as long as all the dum dums corrupt their own systems, you all also have to suffer the consequences....high density, traffic congestion, gang crime, graffiti, counterfeit cigarrettes even, etc etc.
so it actually boils down to personal responsibility. That IS the bottom line. Personal responsibility for the kind of world you wish to live in. Mayor Sam's decadent do as I please days are over. Responsible people make the tough decisions early, drive hybrids, recycle cardboard and packaging correctly, recharge batteries etc. and here's the punchline: at the rate the housing is being constructed in this city, trust me that we'll all be drinking recycled water unless we take personal steps to conserve water.
Here's 4 for free :
1.Wash your car with a bucket of soapy water not the hose.
2. Always use a broom to sweep your driveway, not the hose.
3. Don't daydream in the shower.
4. Landscape with native plants which require less watering.
just imagine every drop of water you waste right now, is eventually replaced with 'toilet water', as you call it.
and I'd like to finally tip a big bucket of toilet water over the heads of the mayor and the city attorney, both of whom now show up with massive water consumption after parading as conservationists in front of the media.
yeah, good one.
what's the next trick?

People should realize that we already drink "toilet to tap". It is a horrible term but MWD and DWP get a significant amount of their water from the Colorado river.
We are downstream everybody. Cities from Moab, Utah to Las Vegas discharge their "treated wastewater" into the Colorado river. DWP and MWD further treat that water so we can drink it.

Yes, everyone not only pays in increasingly deteriorated quality of life with the illegals (and it will ONLY get WORSE) but what they think they save by buying cheap goods and paying lower wages for inferior work, they ARE and WILL pay out in more taxes as the money they pay in drains out the back door to these illegals rather than accomplishing what it should and requiring, in turn, more taxes, higher prices on many goods, bringing in more Mexico-style corruption in government, increased crime that continually creeps closer and closer to their own doorsteps, etc. etc... refusing to deal properly with THIS problem is worse than foolish!

All exactly right. Hooray for all of you. Just when I am about to completely give up, something like this shows that there are plenty of smart, informed, people in SoCal, who actually get it. Thank you!
Thanks for the wise comment about the Colorado River. Same with the Sacramento, when you think of it. Some years ago, we stood in Kansas City at the site of a huge brand new sewage treatment plant, on the bank of the Missouri River. I told my wife that the effluent goes in the river and they use it tomorrow in St. Louis. Then they dump it back in and it gets used again in Memphis, New Orleans, and all points in between.
When I was a senior in engineering school, in 1965, we went on a tour of the LA County treatment plant at Whittier Narrows. They put their effluent into the spreading grounds along the Rio Hondo, to be pumped out by wells from Pico Rivera to Downey to Long Beach. This is the exact same process proposed for Pacoima Wash. They have been doing so for almost 50 years, with no ill effects that anyone has documented.
I used to have a lot of respect for Joel Wachs but, when he jumped on this particular bandwagon, I lost all of it.
Well done bloggers. You are an inspiration to me.

Yea cause you really want to drink the water in New Orleans.
You may as well. Those of you posting on here that are not DWP flacks are drinking their kool aid.

Recycling / Reclaimed water projects are being created by politicians all over to utilize both.
Desalinization is something we will all be hearing more about.
A few years back adding Fluoride was the big thing. Some cities paid huge amounts of money for systems they didn't even use.
The politicians don't ever talk about the possible effects Fluoride could have on immune deficient individuals or diabetics.
There is a reason they have a warning on your toothpaste tube.
All the little water companies in cities are trying to be taken over to make one big one.
Then let's talk about the price of what was once free.

It's healthy for you considering you're drinking water that previously contained shit and piss that they radiate and pump full of chlorine. Oh boy!
Anonymous said:
Some places have this reclaimed water coming through in separate pipes from drinking water. Since such a tiny percent of water is for drinking and cooking compared to watering lawsn, washing cars, flushing, showering, it would make sense to separate it. But we all have common water inflows, not separate pipes going to the kitchens.
Ultimately, separate piping would be a good idea to give peace of mind. For now, I also use anyway an extra faucet filter. Gets rid of chlorine surges on some days.

12:28, you mean you're drinking radioactive water?????

Why no thread on yet another corrupt Latino embarrassing us Antonio Gonzales resigns and its about time. He's responsbile for innocent border patrol agents in jail. Matt Dowd you are ignorant. I'm sick of people saying illegals come here to make a living. Ask anyone and they will tell you there's NOT ONE ILLEGAL working without a fake social security number. Do you not think its costing the city more with the crime these assholes commit in our city? Aren't there enough of them in county jails to make that point? Bill O'Reilly always has all the felony crimes illegals all over the country are committing. Newark they murdered 3 college students for no reason. In Oregon illegal who was arrested 3 times for DUI raped and killed 15 yrs old. In Virginia DUI illegals killed teenagers. Just google all over the country and see the horrific crime illegals are committing in our country.

I think 12:28 was talking about the UV radiation of water for disinfection. Passing water through ultaviolet light doesn't make it radioactive.
You must work at the mayor's office.

1:01, this is 12:28. Guess again, smart guy.
Actually, I work at San Onofre. Any guesses about how much water we release into the ocean after we're through with it?
Anonymous said:
Well 12:28 .... We're not drinking San Onofre wastewater, saltwater or desal water up here in LA.... So is that what you're drinking down there? My mistake and apologies if you have to drink that crap.

This could all be solved if Tony Villar could work it out for DWP to have a pipe delivering any number of Cervezas de Mexico to your tap. It tastes great, less filling and its great for washing your hair!
None of that peckwerwood gabacho piss crap like Coors, Budweiser, Miller, Hamms, etc. though please.

the reason DWP wants us all to drink "treated" water (which has NOT found a way to eliminate metals, nor pharmaceuticals!) -- is the same reason they want us to conserve....
so that more developers can build more and the continued addiction this city has to development will continue....
councilmembers say (but rarely outloud):
"must have more developer fees and more developer-paid infrastructure because the last developer infrastructure was not built to last and is fast becoming unsafe....
must have more property taxes to pay for more and more programs, including pensions like no one ever gets in the private sector....
so conserve water and drink toilet-to-tap so we can help out the building industry and their lobbyists, who really run city hall for us and tell us what to do"

"...pharmaceuticals!"
So, if Los Angeles drinks its own urine, we'll be getting all that Prozac from the Westside and crack from Pacoima toilets, not to mention the THC metabolites from Zuma Dogg's urine?
What a wonderful world!

1:01 & 2:04, this is 12:28 again.

We don't release any water into the ocean. We just bottle it and send it "Special Delivery" to the L.A. Mayor's Office.

Maybe that is why Housing Authority have to spend $2,500 per toilet in affordable housing project.
The $2,500 toilet can recycle water? Not use recycled water, but can recycle water?

true fact, DWP paid for all of the housing authority toilets in late 2006. A non profit replaced all toilets at the housing authority. You can go and compare the brand and make of the toilets, they are all the same. The department of "technical Services" headed by the then director Taracena under Montiel claimed that they installed toilets for the handicapped and charged the famous $2500 per toilet. Not only did DWP paid for the toilets, Taracena firms charged for the already subsidized toilets!!!!! there are records at the Housing Authority as well as DWP and the non-profit contractor. When staff complained to Montiel about the problem, he dismissed the complaints. Angelinos have been double dipped on this toilet issue, no wonder our bills are that high!!Believe me that the water in the toilet is cleaner and clearer than the scum at the housing authority!!!
