Another Day, Another Song: "Murder By Numbers"

One hundred fifty four people were murdered in the City of L.A. between January 1 and April 15, 2006.

That's three murders a day. [CORRECTION: That's three murders every two days.]

The odds of winning the California Super Lotto are 1 in 18 million.

The odds of being murdered in L.A. on any given day are 1 in 2.6 million.

And I bet the majority of them were in South LA. If illegals can rally in numbers for their issue why don't blacks do something about the black on black crime in their community? I think it was Jesse Jackson who said its because blacks don't want to highlight themselves that negatively in the media. How dumb is that?

Might want to check your figures... more ways than one+one.

If there were 154 murders in the first 105 days this year, isn't that 1.5 murders a day (not 3?)

But, if it actually was three a day (and there's a typo in there somewhere??), and there are just under 4 million people in the city of L.A., then aren't the "odds" of being croaked based on all that more like 1 in 1.3 million (not 1 in 2.6 billion)?

Granted that might strengthen the case (whatever it was here), but one way or the other, the math won't get you through the high school exit exam.

(On the udder hand, if I'm wrong, it's because the damn liberals won't allow school vouchers.)

If Walter gets to be mayor, is this the kind of math that will be used to balance the budget?

I think Bratton is a good chief but he should never be away from Los Angeles 1/3 of the time. And as good as he has been, he could have been alot better. For instance, LAPD personnel are allowed to work 3 day work weeks, which lets them take other jobs. How can this be good for LA? Its good for the PPL, and Villaraigosa, like all liberals in elected position, are so scared of pissing off the Police union that this garbage stands. And Bratton accepts it as well. Stay in town Bratton and do your job here!

Anon at 11:16 a.m. -- You're quite right! I calculated 1.5 per day, then thought "well, what the heck is half a murder?" So I meant to put "three murders every TWO days." Thanks for clarifying. My bad.

Here's the other calculation 1.5 daily murders/3.9 million people = 1 daily murder / 2.6 million people.

P.P.S. I never said 1 in 2.6 billion -- with a "b." That's on you, my friend. So we each made a typo. If that disqualifies us from public office, well, I don't know who would qualify...

First of all LAPD officers at LAX are working on the Feds dime not the city. Secondly, all the big police depts. throughout the country are on the 3-12 flexible work schedule. The Daily News covered this and basically stated that officers are working more on 3-12. They still have to go to court on their days off. If they get felony arrest they put in ver 18 hrs days. How would you like to be called in to work on your days off? More importantly if this damn city and our politicans would increase the salaries paid to LAPD officers they wouldn't need to take other jobs. You look at all the other police departments and LAPD is the lowest paid. Santa Monica, Glendale, Beverly Hills and others make over $20,000 more than our officers. Add to that LAPD are so highly scrutinized because of Parks Rampart and they get shot at all the time now cause of the gang bangers with guns and no one seems to give a shit.
