Things Get Nasty In the 42nd

Another local primary battle is heating up and that is for the Democratic nomination for the 42nd State Assembly District between former Los Angeles City Council Member Mike Feuer and West Hollywood Mayor Abbe Land.

We've recieved word that Land is impugning Feuer's integrity! Imagine that! An email floating around states the following:

"[Land] noted that she has raised a considerable amount of money, and would have liked to be a Clean Money candidate, but we don't have that legislation yet, and that Feuer has unfortunately chosen not to limit the campaign funding as she is willing to do, so the sky is the limit, and she needs to spend her time raising more money – which she hates."
Its interesting that Land is crying foul, implying she has a lot of catch up to do. According to Around the Capitol, both Land and Feuer have raised about $500K.

Obviously what Land is trying to do is to cast aspersions on her opponent (ironically too since Feuer is known as a relatively clean politician) while hoping to rally her troops to get some more cash.

How does the e-mail quote insult Feuer's integrity? It just says that since Feuer is not limiting donations, Land can't afford to limit them either. That's not an insult, it's just reality.

Hey Mayor Sam,

How about we just remove Bill and Hillary posts and put them in their own place? It certainly takes away from our local politics.

Since Daniel Tamm is running Abbe Land's campaign, it's natural that he would try to go negative. It's his style. Unfortunately, it didn't work in his favor because Mike Feuer is one of the local politicians with the highest integrity.

There will be nothing to go negative on him about. I hope Land/Tamm doesn't push this any further.

Feuer deserves the seat.

Go Abbe. Abbe is smart, honest and committed to all the right things: fairness and improving the community. If anyone could make a difference in Sacramento, it is Abbe.

The Land campaign has said from the beginning that they hope that both sides will agree not to go negative at all. So far the Feuer campaign has not been willing to make that pledge.

Land has never had anything but positive things to say about Mike.

When asked about why the campaign was so expensive she replied that she had originally accepted the voluntary spending limits, but as Mike Feuer decided he would not abide by the limits, she could not either if she wanted to be competitive in the race. And she called for passage of the Clean Campaign Bill.

That was not an asperion.

This is an asperior: Sam you really are a complete moron.

See the difference?

You can spin, but if you carefully read what Land said, bringing up the clean money campaign is a clever way to try to paint Feuer as corrupt without saying he is.

But I really don't give a rat's petunia. They're both left wing wackos that I would not want in the Assembly, alas, one of them will be.

I find it funny since it is Abbe who:
1) chose to go negative in the first place
2) has had several negative articles about her taking money from people who have business before her in West Hollywood. Feuer has made clear that he has returned money rather than have a conflict of interest.

Nunez Hopes the Third Time's the Charm

Assembly Democrats held their annual press conference today to present their priorities for the upcoming legislative year to the people of California. They could have saved themselves the trouble and run a tape of the press conferences they held in either 2004 or 2005.

"You might say that this sounds a lot like last year's vision, but you got to give us some credit." (Fabian Nunez, Assembly Democrat Press Conference, February 9, 2006)

Nunez is right, Assembly Democrats deserve credit for accomplishing what most people would think to be impossible. Even though Democrats have held a significant majority in the Assembly since Nunez took over as Speaker, they haven't been able to produce any significant legislation on their "legislative priorities" for the last two years.

Recycling the same ideas for a third year in a row is not likely to magically produce legislation that will benefit Californians. It's time for Assembly Democrats to follow through and work with their Republican colleagues to produce legislation that will make California a better place to live, work, and raise a family.

This race is nothing- you want a nasty brawl it is in the 43rd. Head to head grudge match between Phil G and Hacopian.

Fun one to watch.

Ok Phil, you've repeated yourself a bit, probably because you're so excited about your candidate, as a paid consultant should be. I am not working for any candidate, but I am a fascinated observer.

Without repeating myself, I think the Quintero campaign should be awarded the "spin of the year" award. The latest spin? That Krekorian only was competitive in 2000 because of crossover Republican votes in the Open Primary.

I don't know if those spouting that line have looked at the 2000 results, but there was a competitive Republican primary with another Armenian, Craig Missakian on the Republican side. So the idea that Krekorian benefited from a flood of Republican Armenians in 2000 is rubbish. This year he is the only Armenian on the ballot and will draw a lot of Armenians to the polls.

I agree with Phil that it isn’t as easy as the equation presented below; Krekorian will have to have something beyond Armenian votes. But his education credentials should not be questioned. Unlike Quintero, he has shown a commitment to education – as recognized by CTA who has recently endorsed him – and don’t forget that Krekorian will be the only candidate with an education related ballot title.

The only reason Quintero is even viable is because of his commitment to Frommer – which should get him some Sacramento support, but won’t give him a message or narrative that will sell to voters. And Frommer support doesn’t get him away from his Wilson appointment, city contract issues, years of “decline to state” registration, or flat-lining public presence.

Wildman? Don’t count him out. Any consultant should see that he can scrape together $80-100k and get out a bunch of mail saying “re-elect Wildman” and that will be enough to make him competitive. Quintero has the most to gain by Wildman’s weakness because the Wildman UFW endorsement, Latina wife, and connection to the Chavez family will allow him to peel away some Glendale Latinos that Quintero needs lock, stock and barrel in order to be competitive.

Talk about spin...anyone who has the nerve to proudly sign their nonsense as Bobo the Monkey should run for office themselves.

I have to give Eric Hacopian credit, his dirty tricks are working with at least a few of the pundits. The rest of the real world is using his make believe "opp research" to line their bird and monkey cages.

The attacks on Frank are totally amateur
Talk about spin...anyone who has the nerve to sign their comments as Bobo the Monkey should run for office themselves.

I have to give Eric Hacopian credit, his “bush league opposition research” and dirty tricks are convincing a few of the bloggers. Or maybe Bobo et al are all just Eric’s pen names since somehow all the comments always seen to add up to a Krekorian victory. Too bad that the rest of the real world is using his make believe "opp research" to line the monkey cage.

The attacks on Frank are nonsense. Gee, what a surprise…Republican Councilmembers from are supporting Paul Krekorian. And trying to spin Paul as the education candidate is a real stretch. He’s been on the school board a grand total of 18 months…and now he’s going to Sacramento to save our schools…wow, that’ll make me sleep better tonight.

And Scott Wildman…come on now Valley Glen. You and Bobo must be smoking the same banana peels. Scott needs to get a life. Lost the Senate race. Lost the City Council race. Has no job…earning no money…took a loan to seed his campaign and already had to pay it back. Richie Ross is one of the best political minds in the business…but even he can’t breathe life into this flat-liner.

Where's the impugning of integrity here? It's pretty obvious that what Abbe Land is "casting aspersions" on is not Mike Feuer, but the time spent raising money. What idiot would disagree with that?
And the only people going negative are the dim, desparate souls who are spinning all this nothing.
The 42nd is a good race with two good candidates. Nothing nasty about it. Just the hangers on who show up here.
