Election Coverage - CD 14

Finally! The day is here. Of course, it is probably just the beginning of the end, as a run-off will most likely take place, but we'll get to see just where your favorite pols stand in the only poll that actually matters. Here's your open thread until updates arrive throughout the day.

Downtown Central City East blog notes that another downtown blogger has endorsed Pacheco.

LA Observed noted that we shouldn't keep our eyes peeled for a Times exit poll, as they won't be running one.

For those of you wanting to attend the parties tonight, try here:

8:30 PM -- Nick Pacheco, candidate for the Los Angeles City Council's 14th District, will host an election night party at the home of Michael Nogueira. 2154 Hill Dr.

8:30 PM -- Jose Huizar, candidate for the Los Angeles City Council's 14th District, will host an election night party at Salesian High School. Huizar is expected to speak at about 10 p.m. 960 S. Soto St.

Here's a complete list of you choices...

No, that would be the Pacheco spin you've been hearing. Nick's the one who stole City funds by having them funneled into a non-profit who then "donated" the amount to his campaign.

No! You this is Huizar, stop spinning the truth on how corrupt your guy is Huizar Kool Aid drinker. Huizar stole taxpayers funds by having them funneled into development contracts and company and they in turn donated to Huizar campaign. Look at Ameriquest, a company who for years donated to the mayor and Huizar and the Mayor gets caught red handed, taking candy from special interest lobbyist. Does this surprise us, NO! We need to inquire on these crooks. Huizar the crook. Look at his record, he has done crap for our community and now wants to be gifted a position to represent us, no way!

Obama is the last in a long line of national Democrats to endorse Ferrer, including former President Bill Clinton, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean and the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

Ferrer did not win the endorsement of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the first Latino mayor of that city in more than 130 years. Villaraigosa's spokeswoman, Janelle Erickson, confirmed yesterday that he's remaining neutral.

Earlier this year, Villaraigosa attended a fund-raiser for Ferrer in Los Angeles. But the event became a public relations disaster for Ferrer, when his aides told the Daily News that Villaraigosa "organized" the fund-raiser and the mayor's aides said that was untrue.

"Clearly, I did make that promise," Villaraigosa said in an interview. "But I never said when I would do that. I want to give (Stuckey) the same opportunity I am giving every other general manager to implement my priorities..."

Don't be jaded! Things are going to change regardless of who wins.

If Nick wins, the District gets more asphalt, better infrastructure, and some Antonio initiatives figure to have more opposition in Council.

If Jose wins, Antonio gets a ferocious loyalist on City Council, and a chance to put through a lot more of his initiatives Citywide, which could help the district too, if more abstractly.

We endorsed Nick---we think the District needs more asphalt than abstraction at this time---but there are up and downsides to both. But one thing is sure: regardless of who wins, things won't stay the same. Not for the District, and not even for Los Angeles.

Los Angeles, CA. Jon Coupal, President of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association has raised the possibility of a legal challenge for the misuse of bond funds by the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) on the latest Full Disclosure Network™ video blog to be launched on the Internet website http://www.fulldisclosure.net/

David Tokofsky: L. A. School Board Member reveals the LAUSD undisclosed plan to use proceeds from the $3.95 billion bond (Measure Y) to pay off non-voter approved bonds called COPS, Certificates of Participation. (These little known bonds were used to build the now $400 million Belmont Learning Complex after the LAUSD Bond oversight committee objected to using the BB Bonds for the controversial Belmont project.) Also he describes how the District intends to “swap funds” to free up money for salaries and benefits, books and supplies where COPS cannot be used...

Things changed in CD14 when Villaraigosa ousted Pacheco two years ago, and it wasn't JUST less asphalt.

A much more complex change took place. CD14 suddenly had a part-time, detached, uninformed, sequestered, and absentee CM with a political agenda where the needs of the district showed up somewhere around No. # 80. He also filled his staff with out-of-towners who took forever to train, and THEIR #1 agenda item as "make the boss look good" (for his mayoral run), regardless.

Huizar says he'll hire local staffers, but after all this does anyone REALLY believe that if AV hands him this win, he's THEN going to fire ANY of what's left of AV's pet Sacramento transplants in favor of his own selections? PUH-LEAZE.

It will be AV-staff, the sequel "The one's too clueless to take to the Mayor's Office."

And, MOST of Huizar's mailings address citywide issues (AV's agenda now), or things he has MORE control of NOW at LAUSD, like education, than he would ever has a CM.

BAIT and switch, at the very best. This is how AV gets ONE MORE deputy mayor (Huizar) without it affecting HIS offices payroll. Lets call it what it is.

From June 2005:

"As we (Fred Brito and reporter Roberto Medina) were talking, a few of his friends happened by and spoke to him. Antonio Villaraigoza was one of them. My first question in my mind was, 'Does Antonio know who this man really is?' So I asked him, 'Antonio, how do you know Fred?' He simply responded, 'I know him to be a real asset to our community....' As they hugged good-bye, the man who will be Mayor walked off to meet other friends and to order his coffee. The surprising part is how engaged this guy was to Antonio and they spoke as if they were old friends. So I asked him, how do you know Antonio? He said, "I don't really know his personally. He just knows me from what I have done to help a lot of people across California. I have known him for a long time since he was in Sacramento."

Parke Skelton,

I had no idea you let your other dog Brito out for fresh air. When I think you had enough, you surprise me Parke. Brito invited to your Pine Crest Dr. home?

I'm sure he has a room there too.

I went to the JOhn Brito site. Is he a marine?

You know sounds to me that if he was it is that old addage , improvise , adapt and overcome.

The thing is I live in Central City East and lot of the people on the streets are felons . They have a hard time getting work , so they resort to crime . In Los Angeles it is hard to make a living on a very low wage.

I know that is not an excuse for peoples past behavior.

But I think that this does need to be heard. There are many who have not been convicted of embezzlement. I think for JOhn Rito getting a high paying position with his background and having that sort of record , would make it difficult to get a high paying position.

Nevertheless , I may be changing my mind about the sociopath label I placed on him.

But I do have a problem with him getting a job as a psychiatrist in Los Ageles County . That is not right period . It is dangerous to do things like that you can cause harm to others.

Read his blog.

You know john brito could make a go of his not for profit , considering he did get a lot of on the job training.

FIVE DAMN E-MAILS from Huizar campaign central since last night, all BEGGING, no PLEADING with people to come and GOTV.

Are these people desperate or what...?

"Internally" they're saying "so we can knock Pacheco off today (but in the "inner circle" they're saying, so we don't look like we wasted a quarter million on flyers NOBODY but the faithful read.

3-4 of them looked like Huizar was running for SCHOOL BOARD again... with all the references to NEW SCHOOLS and EDUCATION (except for the final tag line), which said "for city council." I'll bet tons of people (who don't have kids) threw them out thinking it was one of the races they don't bother to vote for, unless they do.

Mayors, what happened to Brito's rants? Did Times legal drop a dime on you?

I know you're endorsing Pacheco, but his pro-Huizar dribble might actually help Nick.

Once again Antonio is with Jose in the neighborhood cause no one knows who he is. Antonio has been campaigning all day long with Jose on our tax dollars. If that isn't sending a message that Jose can't do anything by himself. If Jose gets in will Antonio move his city hall office to Boyle Heights? Its an absolute embarrassement to have a grown man running for office but can't do it on his own.

Huizar for City Attorney! Get Rocky out of the City Attorney's Office, PLEASE,(but not so badly that anyone should want him for AG. I would not want to unleash him on the rest of the state.) He's burned a lot of people and about 500 of them are his own attorneys. Careful Rocky . . . the attorneys you burn today are your educated, connected, and/or politically savvy adversaries tomorrow. What goes around, comes around. And what's with Jeff Isaacs as the new head of criminal? Oh, please . . he's playing with the criminal branch like it was his own personal LEGGO set. Call me KIA.
