The Mob, El Pueblo, and Jose Huizar - UPDATE
Steve Hymon checks in on his previous story in the LA Times to give us this update.A nominee to the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument Authority withdrew his candidacy after sending a controversial e-mail in which he joked about contributors to a City Council candidate, a spokeswoman for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said Thursday.Kudos to Steve for his fine reporting. Amazing what happens when shady dealings meet the light of day!
On Tuesday, Tony Scudellari sent an e-mail making fun of 19 supporters of Nick Pacheco, who is running for City Council. In the e-mail, which was forwarded to The Times, Scudellari implied that one contributor who is married is gay. He also joked that another, Michael Gatto, had ties to the Mafia.

Really was great reporting by Steve Hymon. He seems like a great writer and a guy covering City Hall who GETS IT.
Well the past story did not make it so clear how dumb Scudellari's original e-mail did. I'm glad this one did, because there were actually like two people (friends of his) who tried to defend him on a newsgroup. They were like, "c'mon, we all make racist jokes."
Man, do they not get it!
Yep, olvera street of all places needs someone who is culturally tolerant! they've all worked real hard lately to drag it back to respectibility.
El Pueblo has been a nightmare for years. Remember that scathing audit by Chick back in June 2004? Most of the board members serving now were there when all the problems occured. Tony S. should count his lucky stars he's not serving. The merchants get sweet-heart leases far below market.
And, yes, Huizar used to serve on El Pueblo. But, I'm not sure what his connection is to all this. Can someone explain?
Huizar's connection is that the guy sending the offensive, bigoted email was one of Huizar's supporters. Huizar did the classy thing and removed his name from his web site as an endorser.
This was never about Huizar or Pacheco though, just a stupid e-mail.
BTW I'm pretty sure the current board has been going at it with the merchants - the merchants hate them! No sweetheart deals there!
Good for Steve Hymon. His stories the last couple of weeks have been very good investigative reporting. Seems LA Times isn't afraid to print the truths a far cry from when Antonio was running for mayor and all we got were puff pieces on him.
You are lost. There have been sweet-heart and/or below market deals going on for years and many on the current board were there when these deals were handed out. Indeed, the guy who wrote the letter to the Council regarding Tony S. was there as well as a few others.
Scudellari is the worst type of political groupie. His "outing" of a Pacheco contributor was to suck up to the new mayor by doing this dirty deed to help Huizar.
The name Scudellari should always go hand in hand with political dirty tricks from now on!
Scudellari better hope none of these contributors have ties to the mafia, or else he will have a difficult time in his little PUEBLO>

Didn't Rocky stop some of the leases from going forward because he told Antonio that they would amount to a gift of public funds? And isn't Olvera Street Merchants a main source of funds for Antonio and Gloria Molina? From what I understand about the process, the commission has nothing to do with the leases, it is now in the hands of the mayor and city attorney. In defense of the merchants, who wouldn't want to have a multi- million dollar income restaurant while only paying several dollars per square foot?

Yes, the leases are handled by the Chief Leg. Analyst, City Clerk, City Attorney and Council.
Olvera Stree recently had a 75th Anniversary "parade" that was funded by Gloria Molina's "discretionary" funds. It was in April - right before the Mayoral election. Featured prominently in this parade was Gloria and Antonio. Yet only half the merchants bothered to show up, why?
The "consultant" on this "parade" was Maria Ochoa Veloz, a long time Molina operative. Although county funds were used, does the city ethics commission have a right to investigate?
And, the leases go to the El Pueblo Authority (i.e., board) first for approval and then those leases and the recommendation for approval are passed on to the Council.
Huizar's website is painful to look at. And his "record" is still under construction....does he have a record?

So the appropriate abbreviation for Scudellari IS actually, "SCUD" as in the outdated missile that often misfires and typically does as much harm to the user as the target?
People seem very upset at what they believe is someone in Pacheco's camp for engaging in "character assasination" of one of AV's commission nominees who DID engage in "character assassination" of Pacheco and people who contributed to him.
See where I'm going with this, people?? It starts with a capital "H".
As far as it being "private" e-mail. There's no such thing in "politics" buddy boy, the moment that name went on the list of commission nominees, "private" went to hell. Dude should have known that.
Scud, you fizzled like the original scuds. A $750 donation to Antonio, just enough to get you access to humiliate him. Antonio, you should stick to your thousand dollar donors. At least if they embarrass you, Parke can still laugh all the way to the bank.
I'm very happy Scudellari got what he had coming. I hope that's the last of the fool.
People who care enough about their community to contribute to candidates they believe in don't deserve such treatment.
I know Michael Gatto and the other fellow of note in this mess. Both of them are quality guys. You should all be so lucky to count guys like them among your friends.
Anyone who considers Scudellari a friend ought to seriously reconsider. One is judged by the company he keeps.

Right on parque. Eastside Commissioner Sotelo gets promoted from El Pueblo to the Fire Commission for bringing in big bucks from her development company. The scud-sucking wanna-be hasn't got those connections. Sorry, Tony.

Mayor Frank, how about posting the names of contributors to Jose Huizar's campaign (without the racial slurs and innuendos, of course) and see who the builders are really supporting?

The word is that it was Huizar's pollster John Fairbanks that negotiated Hacopians exit.
Fairbanks offered Hacopian an easy money gig on a future LAUSD bond race.
LAUSD needs bonds, because?? They now have to pay 2-3 times the original price for a High School in the Northeast, thanks for AV's mayoral campaign contributor, Murelo!

Mike's a stand up guy. One of the few political operatives that has been successful in the Eastside and Westside. I hear he is one of those L.A. Italians, with a little bit of Mexican in him, just like Garcetti. Since Mike lives in the 13th District he would be an excellent bridge builder in this city. What other city district better exemplifies a brdige between the east and west side of L.A. than the 13th. Brad Sherman was very lucky to have him as his district chief.
Quote from MAV today from the education council meeting,
"I will take over the LAUSD school district very soon, but it's not going to be a top-down approach."
He also mentioned that he knew Romero's proposal was unconstitutional almost two months ago.
Lastly, he mentioned when school starts, he will be building consensus around the governance issue with parents and teachers, which current polls he was privy to show NO support for the mayor taking over. He will be visiting 16 schools on Sept. 6 and 16 more the next day. He's building consenus that the status quo will no longer be accepted. He also mentioned that he will not make his case for LAUSD takeover in the media, but rather in his meetings with parents and teachers. (Note, 3 UTLA folks were at the meeting and MAV clearly stated that "union folks [UTLA] are not going to be happy, but that's ok because even my wife disagrees with the idea that the mayor should be in charge of the school district."
Something tells me Anon 4:17 pm was trying to spread a rumour. Gatto don't live in that Council District. Plus he's been approached by people who want to run post-Garcetti, but tells everyone that he thinks the best guy for the job is a fellow former DD (I think a guy who worked for Firebaw).

I just heard the latest info on the Hacopian payoff for stabbing Nick Pacheco in the back. He was promised either a gig in AV's administartion, of if Jose wins to be hired as Huizar's Chief of Staff.
It was one of scud-suckers friends who tipped off the LAT. There are those that think the scud sucking, kiss assing Tony is getting too big for his boots. And this "friend" came to scud-suckers defense on the northeast list.
