A Drink?

A certain individual who can't be credited with the story has tipped the Sister City Team to a Happy Hour occurring tonight.

After my short but fruitful vacation getting a tall stiff drink is exactly what this old cop needs. So tonight after telling the old deadbeats at Parker Center whats wrong with them, i am going to walk right down the street to Weilands. (free drink for the plug dammit)

The odds of me attending are about 50-50 -- but for you City Hall tinheads the fact that i may attend should be enough to get the gossip juices flowing through your blood. Don't worry i don't plan on mingling with you types, I am going to bring a friend sit right down in a booth and laugh at the fact that you wouldn't even recognize me even if i served your drink.

Gossip Away!

***Update***

I've received several e-mails today -- City hall staffers that weren't invited to the event -- but had plans to be at Weilands with others have cancelled those plans. Due to the possibility that they may be innocently identified as the Chief.

At the same time, i've received several city hall, federal and state staffers wanting to be included on the next happy hour so they can plan ahead. Do I smell a Sister City Fan Club brewing?

i received the evite -- it's CD 3 and 9 inviting everyone. I wasn't going to go -- but with the possibility of finding out who Chief Parker is -- i am clicking Yes now.

Chief -- you are a legend in these halls -- people worship you and despise you -- many of those feelings come from the same offices.

Ha!

Mayor Sam received the same Evite and IF my dinner meeting at The Original Pantry ends early enough, I may just saunter over and join the Chief for a drink.

If an attractive, older gentleman asks you to pull his finger, that may be me. I may also wear my 1984 USC Rose Bowl cap.

One of my favorite incidents in a lifetime of election-watching occurred during that election. Yorty, in a rare instance of doing something besides travelling and campaigning, had rammed through the City Council a number of proposals that enriched Occidental Petroleum. One was a controversial land swap deal where the city got some worthless acres and Occidental got some land which turned out to be quite rich in oil. During the campaign, Bradley charged that Yorty had a personal financial interest in Occidental and Yorty responded that Bradley was a lying fool and categorically denied any such interest. As it does more and more these days, the press stayed out of an election issue and didn't start looking into Bradley's charge until after Election Day when, of course, it meant so much less. Turned out, Yorty himself might not have had a financial interest in Occidental but his wife did. The moment I loved came in one of Yorty's last press conferences when he was asked about this. He said something like, "I never denied that I had any financial interest in Occidental and anyone who says I did is a damn liar." One of the local news channels ran that footage, then ran a clip of Yorty saying, "Neither I nor anyone in my family has ever owned one share of Occidental Petroleum and anyone who says I have is a damn liar." I wish the media would do more of that kind of thing, and do it when it matters. (Later, I believe Yorty actually tried claiming that his wife had purchased more than a million dollars worth of petroleum stock without telling him...)

Is he another money hungry husband of a wife who ran for office and tried to make a bribe that backfired?

Has he embezzeled funds through Gloria Molina accounts and Southwest Voter?
