Tri-partisan Group of Activists call for Resignation of Congressman Tony Cardenas

Two weeks before a primary election, Rep. Tony Cárdenas faced new calls to resign after demonstrators descended on the Democrat’s district office Monday and said they believe an allegation that he sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl in 2007. “This is disgusting,” Gina Felix Goldman, an actress and journalist who lives in Tujunga, said at a press conference in Panorama City involving about a dozen Cárdenas opponents, activists and residents of California’s 29th House District. “Out of respect for the community, out of respect for the family, out of respect for the victim, we are asking the congressman to step down.” Cárdenas revealed May 3 that he is the target of a lawsuit by a woman who says he drugged and fondled her during a golf outing in Los Angeles in 2007, a charge Cárdenas has vigorously denied through his attorney. Last week, an L.A. Superior Court judge ruled that there is “a reasonable and meritorious basis” for the suit to go forward and Cárdenas to be publicly identified as the plaintiff.
