Parklet Policy Victory can't buy El Sereno Peace for CD 14 Councilman Jose Huizar
** Blogger's Note: Through the power of Facebook's Social Media medium, we bring you this most fascinating exchange, that highlights the increased El Sereno Community misgivings about the leadership of CD 14 City Councilman Jose Huizar. What should of been a legislated victory lap instead became a blunt assessment on past issues that remain unresolved within the community. The "Parklet" victory still does not counter more important issues such as why zoning rules were ignored regarding the placement of the Academia Semillas del Pueblo Charter School next to an established (and beloved) community landmark eatery (with a pre-existing liquor license). Below, we cut and paste the dialog via the "I SURVIVE GROWING UP IN EL SERENO" Facebook Page---Scott Johnson.
Once again discerning CD 14 constituents keep focus on true issues of concern in El Sereno Community.

Council voted in favor of our four parklet pilot projects in Council District 14 today – including one in El Sereno! Popular in New York and San Francisco these will be the City’s first parklets and will lead to future pedestrian projects throughout the City. On Huntington Drive, community members participating in our Huntington Drive improvement project decided that the first parklet will be located near the newly renovated Food 4 Less. Another one in El Sereno is already in the works! Thanks to all who helped!! If you would like to attend the next community meeting to discuss these and other proposed Huntington Drive improvements, please call my El Sereno office at (323) 226-1646.

Liz Gonzalez Ooooh really?, Well let me toot my horn to....I was going to these meeting since last year and glad it's finally finalized but that's not important, making sure we keep this a safe environment in the community is what is really important

El Nopal Now, if only Sr. Huizar would stop supporting the unethical divisions of our community i.e. University Hills, Hillside Village, and the laughable Rose HillS, then maybe I would agree about Huizar doing a good job. Otherwise, it's a bunch BS that he cares about El Sereno. I'm don't even know why Anthony Manzano is taking any credit with helping "our community", considering that he doesn't even believe he lives in El Sereno and he's the one who wants to create this fake Rose HillS by chopping up El Sereno. Not to mention that his Rose HillS was supported by Huizar in a motion, all-while Anthony tried to justify it using made up history. Many of us in El Sereno are tired of this nonsense and we do have a vision, but it doesn't include any of the crap going on today. So much for caring about El Sereno.

Liz Gonzalez Is anyone doing anything to stop the motion?
Yesterday at 9:35pm via mobile
El Nopal Yes, members of the community have written in against it. But Huizar tried to sneak it in as part of the re-Districting, that's why the new CD-14 includes part of Lincoln Heights, along Soto St. All because Anthony Manzano believes this area to be his Rose HillS. Dirty, considering that Anthony Manzano is the current president of El Sereno NC (LA-32). The people on that side of the Hill, Lincoln Heights, have no clue that this is happening. The re-districting of Lincoln Heights into CD-14 needs to go to court because A. Manzano lied about the NC Board and community's supporting this move. He did this in front of the LA City Council. Mean while, Huizar is MUTE about request for access to and copies of the files that show that Rose HIllS is a real community, or even Hillside Village.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFdd_N5y5r8

Liz Gonzalez So it was Anthony's M.O. to join NC (LA-32) in order benefit himself? If so, this is a big concern. Does Anthony have a financial gain? Does Huizar's office have a financial gain? There must be some law for cities when it comes to neighborhood councils. If there is financial gain, then we need to look to see if there is some sort of conflict of interest clause. I've known about anthony working on this project for some time, what I didn't know it was that Huizar is backing it

Carlos Morales The LA-32 NC never approved what Anthony states in this video. Several members of the community including board members of the Neighborhood Council asked Anthony why did he state this without LA32-NC Vote or approval, Why was the community not informed of this? The same thing can be said about Councilman Huizar, he NEVER held any community meetings or alerted community members via his weekly email blast of this proposed change in the district. WHY? I bring these points up only because I feel the process was not transparent.

Carlos Morales The Parklet is a great idea, and I thank Councilman Huizar for the process of including the community in the design process that was held last year during several community meetings. Also props to all the community members who invested their time on this project. The EASTSIDE BIKE CLUB plans on utilizing this location in the future to meet up for some of our Community Bike Rides. Our community should take pride and take care of this open space facility, keep it clean, safe, alcohol and drug free. I am looking forward to see more of these to be placed in the city. The first one I have seen and being utilized is in the Silverlake area off of Sunset Blvd.

Sam Nieto El Sereno Needs Its own police department... those little parklets are going to serve as late night hangout areas... and there Is always a financial gain to city projects.

El Nopal Anthony Manzano has this so-called Historic Rose HillS Homeowners Association and at one point Huizar's office actually funded his Homeowners Association to created fliers to pass around the community. It was for a meeting concerning the Mission/Soto Bridge. I hear many residents that went did not like the Rose HillS label. Here's a link to the Motion Huizar proposed in order to create this un-historic Rose HillS. http://cityclerk.lacity.org/lacityclerkconnect/index.cfm?fa=ccfi.viewrecord&cfnumber=11-2057

I KNOW YOU HAVE ENDLESS PROBLEMS IN HUIZARS DISTRICT MOST OF WHICH NONE OF YOU HAVE A CLUE WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT. MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE YOU FORGOT THAT THIS DISTRICT IS A PART OF LOS ANGELES AND THE VALLEY. MAYBE THIS IS WHY YOU CAN'T GET THE NUMBERS TO SUPPORT NOT JUST CHANGE IN YOUR DISTRICT,YOU CAN'T GET THE NUMBERS TO CHANGE THE REAL PROBLEM THE RUNNING OF LOS ANGELES. THE PROBLEMS YOU TALK ABOUT JUST SHOW UP WHERE YOU LIVE, DID YOU EVER THINK THAT SOMEONE ELSE MAY HAVE SIMULAR PROBLEMS IN THEIR DISTRICT OR ARE YOU FOREVER DOOMED TO TUNNEL VISION.
