Gov. Scott Walker's Worst Nightmare- Progressive candidate Joanne Koppenburg has declared victory in the Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice race over incumbent Justice David Prosser, a Republican and former state assembly leader. Prosser, not surprisingly, is not conceding and a recount will most certainly take place. Opposition to Gov. Scott Walker's anti-union budget bill has energized the state and Koppenburg, who had little chance of beating the incumbent a few weeks ago, now finds herself propelled into the winner's circle. Wisconsin Democrats are promising that this is only the beginning, as recall efforts for Senators who supported Walker's bill are well underway. If Koppenburg survives the recount and probable court challenges, Wisconsin's Supreme Court will shift from a 4-3 conservative majority to a 4-3 liberal majority.
UPDATE; 48 hours after the polls closed and 36 hours after all the votes had been unofficially turned in, a county clerk "found" another 13,000 votes stored on her computer. 7,000 of these votes went to David Prosser. I've got a feeling this story isn't over yet.
Mayor Villaraigosa has signed into law an ordinance restricting the size of hillside homes. For years, community activists have worked to stop the developers of these oversize "big box" mansions from cutting into LA's hillsides and constructing these oversize structures.
Trivia moment; The source of these L.A. anti-McMansion laws and new hillside building restrictions originate in the community of Sunland-Tujunga, where, a few years ago, an amazing woman named Roberta Actor-Thomas worked with then Councilwoman Wendy Greuel to craft the original language and definitions that have led to today's desperately needed citywide ordinances.
LACityWorkers.com is very, very upset with Council President Eric Garcetti, going so far as to file a California Public Records Act Request seeking all emails between the councilman and a bunch of other people they appear to be very, very upset with. If anyone can explain what this is all about, please let us know!

So, whether this will translate into the Democratic National Committee putting their weight behind pro-choice Democrats and the pro-choice cause, I don’t know. But at least the face of the DNC and, hopefully, their voice in the media on lots of issues will be an awesome pro-choice female leader.

Congradulations to all Sunland-Tujunga Activist and especially Bill Eich and Roberta Actor-Thomas for spearing-heading and supporting the new Hillside Ordinance that protects L.A.'s foothills. All the trips to PLUM and City Hall were worth it.
Actually, the restriction of size of hillside homes in a City ordinance can be traced to the 1993 enactment of the Mount Washington/Glassell Park Specific Plan which has struck a balance between overall lot coverage and height of hillside development for 18 years.
More recently, the Northeast Interim Control Ordinance that was turned into a permanent restriction on hillside McMansions on the sensitive eastside hillsides was enacted a few years ago.
These ordinances informed the enactment of the Citywide Hillside McMansion ordinance. All of these laws are critical in balancing greenspace concepts with reasonable size and proportion of single family homes in the sensitive hillside areas of the City.
Regarding the Public Records information request from lacityworkers.com; There is growing evidence that Mr. Garcetti has more than just a "friendly" interest in the Coalition of City Unions. He also is actively campaigning on their behalf, attempting to persuade Coalition members to support passage of the "Contract Proposal", and is attending "meetings" intended for union purposes. This could be, and probably is, illegal and/or unethical because he is actually representing city management. As Council President he is supposed to stay out of the fight and accept whatever the membership decides. He is obviously trying to improperly use the auspices of his office and/or position to influence the outcome of the vote. The Coalition itself, has come under suspicion, because of the "strong arm twisting" scare tactics and deliberate misinformation that is being used. It leads a reasonable person to believe that there is an ulterior motive for this relationship between Mr. Garcetti and the staff of the Coalition. If the vote on the Contract Proposal were to be held today, it would NOT pass. Which explains why the Coalition is asking for his help in the scare tactics. There may also be some conflict of interest in these efforts to ramrod this Contract Proposal through.

So let me get this straight. It’s very much OK for UNIONS to BUY a judicial election (spent $1.5M in 4 weeks, when the candidate usually spend an average of $50K), but a self-made millionaire CEO is not allowed to use her OWN money to win a race?
Joe, the bottom line is you are happy with someone BUYING an election. It doesn’t matter what you’re politics are, this is ALWAYS A BAD THING. ALWAYS.
What has happened in WI is more outlandish, more corrupting than what happens on Spring Street.
On top of the unions BUYING a judge, they also went and harassed and threatened small business owners. I guess you’re ok with that too?

I’m just curious though, why no posting on the big elephant in the room. Obama’s incoherent indecisive foreign policy. Or, how about his failure to pass a budget last year to leverage the lives of 800K people for his own political benefit now? Obviously Joe B hasn't dug deeper into the WI recall efforts. If he did he would see that there is aslo a serious recall effort for those craven cowardly Dems. in the WI Senate who fled the state like the rats they are. I expect them to be recalled too.
In another significant race, Democrat Chris Abele bested Republican state Rep. Jeff Stone to become the next Milwaukee County executive. Walker held that post until he was elected governor in November, and Stone twice voted for his anti-union bill.
Walker discounted Abele's win, saying Milwaukee County is historically Democratic.
Turn out the lights. The Republican Party is over in Wisconsin.

Dimwits, All I said was that Kloppenburg was declaring victory. The funny part is the further right the media outlet, the higher the vote count for Prosser. A local paper has Prosser up by 40 votes, while Fox News has him up by 7000!
Expect a seesaw on the lead for the week.

I hear that Council and management are operating as though the Coalition initiative has already passed. Many members have not even received a ballot yet.
They are, as usual, being strong armed into voting yes lest the City declare bankruptcy. Do you think any elected official with hopes of a political future (which is, pretty much, all of them except, maybe, Smith) would allow that to happen?
How could the city declare bankruptcy if their revenue is only 5% less then the previous 2009 high of 7.11 Billion?

And besides; the city is in this mess in the first place because of their own incompetence and negligence. And Miguel Santana, CAO, just "happened" to "find" $50 Million on March 23, 2011, just before the press conference of the "watershed" tentative agreement. The timing of all this is just too uncanny and reeks of gamesmanship.
