Help Wanted! As many as 7000 jobs will be opening up in Los Angeles and Long Beach in 2011 and 2012 as work begins on 2 major infrastructure projects; the replacement of the Gerald Desmond Bridge and modernization of Middle Harbor. The Gerald Desmond Bridge is the cracked and crumbling connection between Long Beach and Terminal Island . The bridge was built in 1960 and was never designed to withstand the volume of trucks transporting goods shipped from China to the Los Angeles of the 21st Century.
They're out of scale, out of place, and they are soon to be "out of here". "McMansions" are headed for a slow death as the City Council unanimously passes new guidelines and restrictions on these monuments to bad taste.

The LA Council District border wars are about to begin! "Neighborhood Councils should be fighting to protect their stakeholders" says Michael Cohen at Citywatch. Yea, and what's up with everyone wanting to be in CD2?
Rut-Roh! Another setback for Tea Party Governor Scott Walker as a judge halts implementation of the controversial and union busting "Budget Reform Bill". This is the second time Judge Sumi has stopped the law from going into effect. Earlier this month Judge Sumi order the law not to be published, a procedural step that would have enacted the law. Republicans had the law published anyways, ignoring the judge's orders.
"Apparently that language was either misunderstood or ignored, but what I said was the further implementation of (the law) was enjoined," said a visibly annoyed Dane County Circuit Judge Maryann Sumi. "That is what I now want to make crystal clear."

These companies paid no taxes in 2009 and that trend continued in 2010...
1) Exxon Mobil made $19 billion in profits in 2009. Exxon not only paid no federal income taxes, it actually received a $156 million rebate from the IRS, according to its SEC filings.
2) Bank of America received a $1.9 billion tax refund from the IRS last year, although it made $4.4 billion in profits and received a bailout from the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department of nearly $1 trillion.
3) Over the past five years, while General Electric made $26 billion in profits in the United States, it received a $4.1 billion refund from the IRS.
4) Chevron received a $19 million refund from the IRS last year after it made $10 billion in profits in 2009.
5) Boeing, which received a $30 billion contract from the Pentagon to build 179 airborne tankers, got a $124 million refund from the IRS last year.
6) Valero Energy, the 25th largest company in America with $68 billion in sales last year received a $157 million tax refund check from the IRS and, over the past three years, it received a $134 million tax break from the oil and gas manufacturing tax deduction.
7) Goldman Sachs in 2008 only paid 1.1 percent of its income in taxes even though it earned a profit of $2.3 billion and received an almost $800 billion from the Federal Reserve and U.S. Treasury Department.
8) Citigroup last year made more than $4 billion in profits but paid no federal income taxes. It received a $2.5 trillion bailout from the Federal Reserve and U.S. Treasury.
9) ConocoPhillips, the fifth largest oil company in the United States, made $16 billion in profits from 2007 through 2009, but received $451 million in tax breaks through the oil and gas manufacturing deduction.
10) Over the past five years, Carnival Cruise Lines made more than $11 billion in profits, but its federal income tax rate during those years was just 1.1 percent.
Per a City Council mandate, all City work projects (even when private corporations can bid on them) must hire civil service workers--union only. 'Not positive (need to re-read the motion) but these workers must be LA residents. That doesn't limit it to existing members. New hirees will become union members if hired for these jobs.

Joe B you are missing a critical point about Wisconsin.
The only thing that the judge's ruling does is temporarily stop the law from being put into effect. It'll take a monumental effort to undo it. Just like Obamacare.
And isn't it funny that the judge's name is pronounced "sue me."

Chevron made a net tax payment of $1.5 BILLION to the US govt plus another $376 million to state govts. 2009 was $211Million on less income.
EXXON... paid $21.5B in fed income taxes in 2010 $15B in 2009. $28.5B to the states in 2010 and almost $26B in 2009.
Tax rate in 2010 was 45% down from 47%.

I think most CD2 residents would rather keep Paul as our councilman for awhile, but I can appreciate your sentiments.
I would love to see Paul for Mayor but it's true, who would watch over us in Council?
If so many people want to be represented by Paul Krekorian why do they continue to re-elect the Councilmembers they don't like?
