Jack Weiss Hates Palms

Dear voter:

If you need yet another reason to vote AGAINST Jack Weiss in the city attorney's race, consider his sad record in following up on a petition by his Westside Village constituents asking the city for help in moving out of the Mar Vista Community Council across the 405 Freeway to join up with the abutting Palms Neighborhood Council. He said on February 22, 2005, that he'd take some steps to resolve the boundary dispute.

He never did so, leading me to conclude that he is interested nAot in fairness but in looking around for influential people to support him in his political push to higher office.

Read about it at
http://www.palmsvillagesun.info/WV-old/WV.05/WV.05.03.html#WVCA-Meeting

But if you need a reason to vote FOR Jack Weiss, remember that his office was instrumental in maintaining the wide property setbacks that Palms residents have enjoyed for more than a century (since 1886). Greedy landowners wanted to build their big, clunky buildings without the generous front landscaping that have marked many Palms streets for so long. His staff argued to the Area Planning Commission against such invidious proposals, and Palms residents won by a close Planning Commission vote of 3-0 against the wishes of absentee landlords.

You can read THAT story at
http://www.palmsvillagesun.info/RealEstate.07.02.html

So take your pick on Weiss: It's a mixed record.

Sincerely,

George Garrigues

Pretty much the whole of Los Angeles hates Jack Weiss, so Palms is not alone.

Anyone want to bet Weiss won't break 37%?

Is there anyone actually FOR Jack Weiss besides the sycophants? All the activists and blogger, even liberal ones, are out there bashing on Weiss and supporting Trutanich. It seem the folks pumping for Jack are the paid whores. What does it say for a politican that not only can't even inspire a movement but can't even inspire passion in folks beyond those who have a vested interest? Even Antonio has "fans." Jack has none. Sad.

The Los Angeles Times today:

"Analyzing the facts in the city attorney race ads."

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2009/05/analyzing-the-facts-in-city-attorneys-race-ads.html

My comment posted at that site follows. Longwinded, but Weiss provides so much ammunition:

Weiss has spent millions of dollars on his campaign for City Attorney. He has been
bombarding my cable television system with his advertisements. One interesting aspect I find in the Weiss’ ads I have seen is that they do not discuss any significant, cost-effective accomplishments by Weiss during his seven-plus years as a City Councilperson. Perhaps that is why so many of Weiss’ ads are attack ads against Carmen Trutanich and the clients Trutanich has represented as a defense attorney.

Some of us may not care for some of Trutanich's clients. However, Trutanich apparently represents his clients well. As a resident of City Council District 5, which Weiss was elected to serve, I am not convinced that Weiss has represented this District or the City in general in an acceptable manner.

For a person running for the City Attorney position, Weiss and/or his campaigns have displayed a troubling lack of respect for applicable laws. When Weiss ran for the District 5 Councilmember position in 2001, his campaign received thousands of dollars in laundered campaign funds from Casden Properties. Eight years later, Weiss has yet to reimburse the City or any other governmental entity with respect to these illegal contributions. For other violations in his 2001 City Council campaign, Weiss’s campaign was fined thousands of dollars by the City’s Ethics Commission.

Within the past month, Weiss participated in a fundraiser that violated City ethical provisions that were adopted by the City Council while Weiss was a councilmember. Only after the Los Angeles Times inquiried into this matter, did the Weiss campaign agree to return the funds–allegedly around $20,000–Weiss collected at this fundraiser–cohosted by Kelly Candaele. Candaele later resigned as a City pension board member after the Times raised questions.

Even more recently, the local broadcast television station, Channel 11, reported that Weiss chose to attend a fundraiser hosted by convicted felon who had engaged in massive amounts of fraud. Although going to felons for campaign funds may not constitute a violation, some might find it questionable for a City Attorney candidate to do so. Also troubling regarding this felon campaign solicitation matter is that, when Weiss was questioned on camera, he made a statement later contradicted by his own campaign, according to Channel 11.

Channel 11 also reported that the Weiss campaign stated that it would return funds collected from the felon fundraiser. I have seen no media verification that the Weiss campaign has kept its word in this matter–or that the Weiss campaign actually returned the Candaele-related contributions.

Earlier this week, at a press conference outside City Hall calling for a governmental investigation into the illegal Candaele fundraiser, Weiss’ campaign manager attended the event, accompanied at by a prominent criminal defense attorney–Steven G. Madison, who offered his opinions on the propriety of such a proposed governmental investigation. The Times and its subscribers would be well served by the Times reporting on what relationship Weiss, his campaign, and criminal defense attorney Madison have.

The absence of any genuine Weiss support is very telling. We can spot the Weiss bloggers a mile away, and I was going to comment that there hasn't been as much pro-Weiss stuff recently as I think even they're realizing it all over on Tuesday night.

But it is make or break for Weiss. He's openly and unashamedly breaking the law against fundraisers hosted by city employees (Candaelegate/Pensiongate) and the felon fundraiser? Rumor has it another city appointee co-hosted.

Weiss thinks (hopes) that if he wins he'll be able to bury the whole ugly affair as the City Ethics Commission will take years to do anything, and as City Attorney he can decline to prosecute his insiders who funneled, laundered, or flat out openly contributed in violation of laws.

If he wins, you can bet the Trutanich camp will be pressuring the US Attorney, the DA, the AG and anyone else, to investigate.

All it takes is one illegal contributor to roll over and the whole house of cards crumbles and Weiss's co-defendants rush to make sweetheart deals and spill their guts.

Weiss will serve briefly before he's told to step down as the indictments roll in. Then the city council, gets what the Mayor really wants - the opportunity to appoint a city attorney.

City's Ethics Commission posted the candidates' most recent financial statements on its website Friday (5-15) night. According to one source, the candidates were supposed to post these statements electronically by midnight as well as in paper form.

I'm not sure if the campaign statements that the Weiss campaign posted yesterday and previously address the campaign's promises of returning the Candaele fundraising contributions and the contributions from the convicted felon Rosenberg fundraiser.

My understanding--and I could be wrong on this--is that applicable law requires that, under certain circumstances, returned contributions have to be reported on these campaign financial statements.

Certainly a matter that should be investigated.

Among the recent contributors to Weiss:

AT&T, concerning which the City Council recently voted to initiate litigation due to AT&T's (or an affiliate's) PEG Access-related programming practices.

Ana Cubas, CD 14 chief of staff. Some may remember Cubas when she sat on the recently disbanded Board of Information Technology Commissioners.

I emphasize "sat." What had once been a respected Board had devolved into a joke on the people of Los Angeles when Cubas was on the board. While she sat on the Board, thousands of complaints against cable operators were filed with the City of Los Angeles. (Cable franchising and customer service were responsibilities of that Board.)

Yet, during Cubas' tenure, NOT ONCE did that Board fine a cable operator under the City's applicable cable/video customer service standards.

Perhaps not one of the thousands of complaints had merit. Or perhaps that Board stunk.

Glad I don't live in CD14.

Yeah, Fuentes/Berger/Rumpole, we saw your rant in the original and posting it here is as bad as zuma dogg's obsession with himself. Sad, a grown man like you should shill for his girlfriend Trutanich day and night. Very creepy, your obsession and insidious.

WHAT did he promise you, exactly? And of course he's trying to hurl accusations here and there in desperation, who cares? He started negative and nasty and went downhill from there because that's all he's got.

And of course I'm Ace, I'm paid the big bucks to sit here and do this. I;m just someone who's so turned off by the kinds of acolytes Trutanich attracts I'd vote for anyone else.

What a wussy reason to oppose a councilman for something like city attorney -- not helping an NC move its offices? Did you follow up with staff?

There's a field deputy who always comes to my NC's meetings in CD5 and although I"ve not met Weiss personally these staff people have always been extremely friendly and helpful. Even though some of the board members have tested their patience and tolerance in ways that I could never have borne.

Most community activists are nice and have a friendly report with each other and staff but some are just looking for someone to take it all out on. I'm sorry but this issue is not compelling. The other about preserving setbacks is hardly a negative either to me.

Instead of blogging here, we all must be using community electronic networking to get the word out about Villaraigosa and Weiss.

Tell people the best way to express disgust with a Mayor who cannot keep campaign promises, is to elect Carmen Trutanich.

Send a message to the Mayor and to the Democratic Party that Villaraigosa has no talent to be Governor.

Then this summer, when the layoffs start rolling in at City Hall, we begin the recall.

The answer to your asinine question is: "Of course not."

Among the many differences between me and your variety of subhuman life form are:

(1) When I raise allegations against someone, I provide proof that would satisfy a reasonably intelligent person;

(2) When I raise allegations against someone, I identify myself and don't do so anonymously, unlike a gutless wonder such as you.

Two Days Left For Special Eletion.

Don’t Be Fooled By The Wolves Dressed In Sheep Clothing!

Vote NO on Propositions 1A through 1E on May 19, 2009.

Prop. 1A will raise taxes on all Californians and extend these taxes for one to two years, taking another $16 billion from you! The already approved tax increase will cost a typical California family $1,100 annually.

HIGHER SALES TAX! Proposition 1A will extend the sales tax hike for an additional full year. California taxpayers already pay the highest sales tax in the nation. This is a direct attack on all working families, especially low-income residents.

HIGHER CAR TAX! Proposition 1A will extend the DOUBLING of the car tax. This affects every California car owner.

HIGHER STATE INCOME TAX! Proposition 1A will extend an income tax increase for two extra years. Californians already pay the highest income tax rates in the nation. Under Prop. 1A, you’ll pay even more.

REDUCTION OF TAX CREDIT FOR DEPENDENTS! Californians with children will see a reduction in the tax credits for dependents, costing them $200 per child. Prop. 1A will extend this attack on families for an extra two years.

The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association is urging a vote of "NO" on Prop. 1A, which DOUBLES the tax increase!

To May 16 7:09, I guess you're not aware of Bratton's recent statement where he backs away from Weiss. He said that while he still supports Weiss, he will work well with Trutanich. He went on to say that he works with the DA USAtty DEA FBI etc even though he doesn't always agree with them....perhaps it's an olive branch because Bratton sees the writing on the wall like the rest of us do?

10:35, pretty desperate attempt to spin. Actually of course all law enforcement is required to work with anyone who's city attorney -- Cooley has said the same thing about Weiss, and has similarly backed down from earlier inflammatory rhetoric. Which was WAY over the top for Cooley and he's been slammed for it, for compromising the whole office.

Trutanuch's camp has also lamely tried to spin that the mayor had distanced himself from Weiss, that others are, not true. Shameless of Trutanuch to put Bratton in a photo without Bratton's knowledge let alone permission. Many see Trutanich's nasty, misleading campaign for what it is. I think the Times' Greene is acting in an openly political way to try to justify its initial mistake based on misinformation that it's just reflecting super-badly on them. Another reason no one takes these endorsements seriously any more.

I just got a Democratic Voter Guide with JFK on the cover, "In the JFK Tradition" it says.

FEATURING A PAID but deceptive APPEARANCE BY CARMEN 'NUCH' TRUTANICH.

Back cover says "Official Endorsements of the Democratic Party" and shows the real Democratic party-endorsed candidates and props.

But WAIT, WHOSE MUG IS INSIDE, UNDER CITY ATTORNEY?

CAEMEN 'NUCH' TRUTANICH!!!!!!

VERY FINE print on bottom says that this "JFK Alliance is not an official pol party organization" and Candidate "Appearance is paid for and authorized by each candidate and ballot measure which is designated with an *."

* PHONIES LIKE TRUTANICH

What's especially disturbing is that Trutanich and his acolytes have been bashing Weiss for being on a Republican mailer while he's paid to fool Democratic voters. TYPICAL TRUTANICH HYPOCRISY/ PHONY 'PIETY' AND SHAMELESS DEMAGOGUERY.

Weiss is a life-long Democrat whose views are in sync with many majority Republicans on some issues BUT Trutanich was a lifelong Republican who switched to "Independent" just to run, same as he carpetbagged into L A.

His key endorsements are from Republicans like Cooley, Baca. Zine and Met News' lifelong Republican editor/owner and fellow USC alum Roger Jacobs. All of whom PRETEND and claim they're not partisan but admit it when they think they're "among like friends."
