They're drinking one too many mint juleps in Nawlins. The Nola.com blog Notes in New Orleans takes the Crescent City's Mayor - Ray Nagin to task for not responding to violent murders in the city saying Nagin "sits on mute, hiding in his executive tower on Poydras, only prying his behind off his king's throne when he sees picket signs with his name on them coming over the horizon."But - as the bourbon drinking blog cheers - "take a city like say Los Angeles where the mayor actually demonstrates not only compassion but that he's in touch with the city and responds like you would expect a leader to respond."
Excuse me while I barf!
Lets hold in the vomit while we allow Mr. Nola to continue: "Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced that the city and county have hotlines available for people in desperate straits, including job centers, counselors and suicide hotline workers. 'Know we are waiting with a helping hand and an open heart,' he said."
Villaraigosa's comments were made at his latest photo opp concerning the sad case of Ervin Antonio Lupoe who upon being terminated by his employer allegedly shot and killed his wife and five children before turning the gun on himself.
Oh this guy did not do his research!

Let's face it, we have the biggest clown as a Mayor and everyone is now calling him "The gang banger Mayor of Los Angeles." He's desperate for attention and now he thinks he's the Police Chief. Don't forget Villaraigosa supported a MAJOR cocaine DRUG DEALER to get pardon while 16 BLACKS men are still in jail who were Viganli's runners. C'mon people this is what we should be discussing and why the FEDS aren't investigating the corruption with the city elections like they are in other cities. KARMA is a bitch

I was one of the first people to criticize Mayor Villaraigosa for his shameless grandstanding at the site of a murder-suicide. I went on KABC on Wednesday morning on "McIntyre in the morning" and explained to drive-time listeners that Antonio is "Phony Tony" Villaraigosa because if that troubled man had called the Mayors Office three hours before the tragedy and asked to speak to the Mayor, they would have told him to get lost. But just hours after the tragedy, the Mayor is down there in Wilmington on the guys front lawn doing his best "Schindlers List" acting job talking about how he wishes he could have saved them all. Disgusting.
This is not the first time this Mayor has done this. He also did some grandstanding at the Metrolink crash. Throwing on a firefighters jacket -- as if he had rushed into the flames himself! Unbelievable!
I pray that voters will have the common sense to reject this cartoon character of a Mayor.

Getting blown off initially by the service arm of politicians is S.O.P.
Sometimes they do it outright, like your description demonstrates, and sometimes they do it more subtly, as in "stroking" the distressed constituent as the remedy.
All of what you describe about Tony's grandstanding is true, but it's nothing new. The only thing different is that he's using different bodies to stand on with each tragedy, trading in his soapbox for people in order to get some needed altitude.
What needs to be made more visible is all this to the UNINFORMED, and those would be Tony's "voter base" (that base included the "informed-but-I-have-have-a-stake-in-the-game, like Tony's staff and appointees and the campaign contributors who don't want to try having to re-invest in a new mayor who may not be so quick to gobble down the offerings.
The All-about-me mayor is all also the all-about-money-for-me mayor.
I try to avoid name-calling as there are others on this blog who gladly will take up that slack anyway, but Phil, you are TOO accommodating to Tony's side. Praying is o.k. but getting voters to the polls for Tony's opposition is what is going be all that's counted on March 3.
Tony lies. That's the long and the short of it. And he does it over and over. And you wonder why he won't debate?
Yesterday a blog comment recited a Daily News story where Tony spoke of transparency in government- but speaking and doing sure are separate matters on that subject for short-term memory-Tony. I almost thought I was the only one that heard that when Tony first tried to snow us, since he never practiced it.
Maybe somebody should show HIM the clippings, or maybe it's lost the big pile of photos he's collected while "working." Whatever the case, transparency is completely a foreign concept to his administration.

A stupid ceo, president, director who has fired most of his staff, spent 10 plus million of tax dollars for his illegal firings, getting ready to take last resort housing from the poorest of poor with no sound housing plan in place for them and WE (the the bigger dummies) pay him half a million a yr plus fringes , more than the chief of police the govern, the president, the senators and far more than he qualifies for. The funniest story I heard was Phil Jennerclown walks into the LA Times front lobby, tells them he's a candidate for mayor and demands to be interviewed.

They both think Walter's the clown because he's a snob and blew $200,000, more money than either of them could ever dream of, with nothing to show for it. Moore was quoted in the Daily News not wanting to be associated with gadflys and fringe elements like zumadork.
They're ALL right. So AnVil can sit back and ignore the lot of them and from a political survival point of view, why shouldn't he.
Walter's best bet of getting noticed in lieu of a debate is arranging to have a car with his LED name on it stolen and then hold a press conference to thank the cops and his faithful public when it's found (Steve Lopez's very clever suggestion, one Walter might seriously try). Zuma's made an ass and public nuisance of himself for years while jennerjerk is trying to go for personal attacks on AnVil that no one cares about except 3 fat Latinas, and then on the other hand he tries to ingratiate himself with the mayor by saying he agrees with him on how he's handling his campaign and maintaining the high road in the face of crazydogg and Wacky Walter.
Sure Lopez would like more merriment at the expense of all of them, especially Antonio -- what else is a columnist going to work with? -- but he knows the score.

Politics is politics, and you have to be tough if you want to be involved. I'm plenty tough.
I actually served in the military, unlike most of the other candidates for Mayor.
I don't care what type of names you call me or what type of criticisms you level at me...that is all part of the game. But don't make factual statements that aren't true. Don't say that I did certain things unless I actually did them. It is a disservice to the whole process when you make things up.
I did not "demand" that the LA Times interview me. I simply went over there and told them I was one of six (at that time) candidates who would be on the ballot. I asked if they wanted to interview me or photograph me...they said they "didn't have anyone who could do that."
They were politely blowing me off.
I was disappointed because it seemed amazingly unprofessional, but I don't blame them. The Times has big problems right now...huge layoffs...employees in fear. Probably nobody wants to risk their careers interviewing someone running for Mayor who DOESN'T have a million dollars in his campaign account.
No problem.
It is my responsibility to get my message out.
If the Times can't help me or even mention my name...so be it.

6:07pm, thanks for saving me the effort of having to explain that point. PLUS, to the dummy who says ZD will help Antonio avoid a run-off with every vote ZD "takes away" from Walter (if ZD is "taking" votes from Walter, I guess they weren't his in the first, place), but the point is...it doesn't matter if the vote goes to ZD or Walter...it's if it DOESN'T go to Antonio.
So if you are hoping for a run-off, it doesn't matter if the vote goes to Walter or Zuma. The only outcome it will have, is whether it would be Zuma or Walter in the run-off. But that is not your complaint. Your complaint is that Zuma will hurt the chances of a run-off. YOU DON'T GET IT:
A) It's Antonio vs ALL OTHER CANDIDATES COMBINED. So it doesn't matter where a non-Antonio vote goes, if you are only concerned about forcing a run-off. Now if you are conncered that Zuma will prevent Walter from being in the run-off, because you think ZD will be #2, and Walter will be #3...then that is a separate issue. That is the issue of Zuma Dogg simply beating Walter and making it into a run-off, instead of Walter. That is not about allowing AV to win withoug a run-off, crybaby.
B) You automatically assume that Zuma only shares voters with Walter. I would say Zuma will pull votes in the way 6:07 has described.
Seriously, I think Zuma will pull WAAAAAAAY, WAAAAAY, WAAAAAY more votes from people who would have voted for Antonio in the past, that I will "take" from Walter Moore. (And again, if the mere placement of my name on the ballot means I will be "taking" votes from Walter, they weren't his in the first place. He just announced he was running a year before I did, loser.
Anyway, In the past week I was on ABC News Nightline, KNBC 4 11 o'clock News, and last night (Friday) on the Fox 11 10 o'clock news.

I heard Gil Cedillo State Senate candidacy was rocked when his labor union support went to the Antonio-supported candidate Carol Liu.
Here's what happened:
Remember when Villaraigosa's cousing John Perez was running for Assembly? Villar offered the Cedillo-backed candidate (Augusto, his former aide) a commissioner appointment to drop out of the race.
Well, the union now sees that as a sign of weakness of Cedillo's part (that Antonio knocked out Cedillo's candidate so easily).
So although Gil thought the unions would NEVER turn on him after his lifetime of support to them, they did.
So to the people who are scared Antonio is running away with the City and State...HE IS!
THIS IS THE PROBLEM...Villaraigosa is selling out the city with these commissioner appointments. These people are not being appointed because of their experience in the department. But because the mayor needs to use them to help maintain power and help him with his Gubenetorial bid as soon as this mayoral election is over.
Yea someone is not doing the math right. An anti-AV vote is an anti-AV vote whether it goes to Zuma or Walter.
The candidates who I do believe who will get most of their votes by taking away votes from Walter are David H. and Phil.
There is a certain core of anti-AV voters who are liberal. They may not like Antonio but they won't vote for Republicans/Conservatives like Walter, David H. or Phil.
Zuma on the other hand, though not a Democrat or a liberal, is not viewed as a Republican or conservative and has far more moderate viewpoints on the political scale. He's really more of a populists. Liberals who hate AV can go with that.
So for Zuma his challenge is getting out there and getting out that vote. It appears he's getting some decent media coverage for a candidate with no funding; he just needs to be out there everyday talking to folks and turning out the vote. He appears to be doing that.
Hence my original prediction stands that while I don't think there will be a run-off, Zuma will get more votes than Walter. The lower the turnout the less likely that is.
However if there is to be a run-off it's completely irrelevant that Zuma is running; Zuma not running would not have increased Walter's chances for a run-off.
Downtown News reports, "Walter Moore, who according to the latest campaign disclosure statements has raised $202,000 but has spent $216,000 (though he also has received $43,000 in matching funds), is not garnering nearly enough traction to pose a threat."
The only supporters Walter has left are the anti-Latino Minutemen types. Everyone else who is anti-AV is going with either Zuma Dogg or David Hernandez.
Walter has certainly developed into the poster boy for squandering a potential opportunity. $200,000 of hats and bumper stickers? Moron.
