This is the city: Los Angeles, California. I work here. I'm an ex-mayor. Los Angeles is a magnet for people from all over the world. Some of them run for public office. Inevitably some of them stray from the golden rule and rule for those that have the gold. That's when I go to work. My name is Yorty. I'm a dead pol.

Obama! McCain was reaching for heartstrings and even appeared about to lose his cool. Barack was articulate and polite, McCain was an
angry relic.

Nobody won. Both candidates just followed their talking points and failed to engage people or do anything memorable. McCain was probably the best that anyone has ever seen him, but that was just enough to keep him from being crushed by Obama.
Nothing was said that will show up on on the highlight reels.
The other poster has a point. Palin could have made it more interesting by doing her Barbie thing, but it would have been an embarassment to the country.

Anyone notice that McCain never looked at Obama? Chris Matthews is all riled up about it.
And guess who was wearing a flag lapel pin?

Obama vaults ahead of McCain in Virginia which hasn't voted Democratic since forever.

McCain is a senator with many more years experience than Obama, viewed in that context Obama did a a better job. But if you take the experience factor out of the equation the debate had no gotcha moments or any winner. Both had NO real insight into the current Wall Street crisis or provided any unique solutions.
I would agree with McCain fire everybody connected to the economic crisis and use the FBI to investigate every greddy bastard executive on Wall Street. A kid stealing a six-pack of beer pays a stiffer penalty.
The only thing I had to laugh at as when an old Washington politicain like Mcain is NOW going to shake-up Washington.

CBS is reporting:
40% of uncommitted voters who watched the debate tonight thought Barack Obama was the winner. 22% thought John McCain won. 38% saw it as a draw.
68% of these voters think Obama would make the right decision
about the economy. 41% think McCain would.
49% of these voters think Obama would make the right decisions about Iraq. 55% think McCain would

Look at Valley Dope running to her computer to be first at 8:38 and 9:09, so it appears it's separate people.
Haven't seen her use her regular sign in name lately. Sad girl, so emotionally invested in something she doesn't remotely understand.

Interesting. All those unique visitors that Haikula tells us about, but only a handful of responses to this post. Guess everyone was watching South Park instead so they could learn some new insults.

Neither had the knockout punch. McCain had Obama on the defensive in Foreign Affairs, and he nailed Obama on his earmarks in the economic area. I note however, that Obama didn't have any earmarks in the time period he was considering a run for the Presidency - something McCain failed to mention or capitalize upon.
Obama actually got a bit flustered in the first 10 minutes of the debate - one could actually observe him wishing he could have used his teleprompter. He regained his footing fairly well, but one could see later in the debate that Obama was trying to keep his temper in check while McCain was speaking. If looks could kill, McCain would be in the morgue, having been killed off by a glaring Obama.
Still, in my opinion, it came down to style (Obama) versus substance (McCain); neither scored the knockout blow.

It's a race to the bottom! It was too boring for words, and all it did was pave the road for future retards!
Why is it that this country can't come up with a candidate that is smarter than my 12 year old daughter???
I will not be voting for ANYONE...I will be gearing up to watch this country choke on it's own hubris and ignorance. It's going to be the spectacle of the millenium! I can't think of a better death squad than Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Barney Frank, and Henry Paulson!
I'm rooting for Putin and Chavez...they really know how to do Socialism and Communism! Bring it on!

The two party system has ruined America. It has condensed our choices for leadership to the lesser of two evils. I would have liked to have had other Party's candidates there to call Obama and McCain on some of their BS! Too bad Ross Perot scared the crap out of the Dems and Republicans and forced them to close the Presidential debates to any other Party. We do live in a Democracy, but it certainly isn't an unfettered Democracy.

The majority of tv reporters from CNN so on all are saying they were surprised with the experience McCain has been touting because of his years Obama held his own. I was shocked even the Republican strategist stated this. Most stated that McCain needed a home run on this one and failed. It didn't help that he tried to show off his foreign knowledge and named the wrong president for Pakistan. Overall people are giving a slight edge to Obama

Here's what I really don't understand: why have we agreed that John McCain is a war hero?
He likely got into the military academy using connections because his father and grandfather were admirals. He graduated 5th from the bottom, and like Bush, spend lots of this time partying.
He didn't do real well in flight school, but was good enough.
He lost 5 planes, one in combat. One he lost while flying too low over the Iberian Peninsula and hitting power lines.
He logged only 20 hours in combat before getting shot down over North Vietnam. The instructions to the pilots on that day were to turn back from the bombing run if they came under attack from surface-to-air missles. He kept on going when the attack began.
On his fourth day in captivity, while hurt and being beaten, he gave in and gave the enemy what they wanted from him. Once they realized he was the son of an admiral, they broadcast his "confession" over loudspeakers throughout the prision camp to demoralize the other prisioners.
My question is why does he get to be the hero?
What about the others who spent more time in combat, who didn't lose planes, who followed orders, who were successful, and who didn't give into the enemy?
Having served in combat, it pains me that he gets elevated so much farther over them.

Intrade is a very interesting place to visit on the web because people use it to invest real money behind who they believe will win the presidential race, among other things.
It isn't a scientific telephone survey in which you hope people tell the truth.
During this last week, investors have been dumping McCain stock like it was WaMu. In fact, it's difficult to determine which had a worst week.
A week ago, investors felt that McCain had a 52% of winning the election. After suspending this election, and changing his mind on attending the debate, investors didn't wait around to understand his bizarre behavior. He dropped to 44%. And he dropped right after the debate.

During the debate the two candidates disagreed what McCain advisor Henry Kissinger said about meeting with people like officials from Iran without pre-conditions.
Well, this came up during the Katie Couric interview with Governor Barbie. Barbie was programmed to repeat the party line, but at the end Couric said that CBS has Kissinger on tape saying the opposite.
Here's an excerpt:
Sarah: I think with Ahmadinejad, personally, he is not one to negotiate with. You can't just sit down with him with no preconditions being met. Barack Obama is so off-base in his proclamation that he would meet with some of these leaders around our world who would seek to destroy America and without preconditions being met, that's beyond naive, and it's beyond bad judgment, it's dangerous.
Couric: So you're saying that Henry Kissinger is naive? For supporting that?
Sarah: I've never heard Henry Kissinger say, "Yeah, I'll meet with these leaders without preconditions being met."
Couric (in the news broadcast at the end of the airing of the interview): Incidentally, we confirmed Henry Kissinger's position following our interview. He told us he supports talks, if not with Ahmadinejad, then with high level Iranian officials, without preconditions.

According to a CBS survey of 500 uncommitted voters after the debate:
39% said Obama won
24% McCain
37% Draw
46% said they walked away with a better feeling about Obama, and 32% had a better feeling for McCain.

Did anyone notice that the only one, certainly the only VP candidate, who didn't say anything after the debate was Sarah Palin?
The campaign didn't want their childlike candidate to say a thing.
Wolf Blitzer at CNN said they got e-mails complaining that the station covered Joe Biden, but not Palin. He went on to explain that the campaign blocked media access to her.
Wonder how she feels?
Is she too stupid to join the rest of the world in providing comments and spin?

Palin is dumb, but Couric definitely tried to ambush her.
The quote about Kissinger, as she clarified AFTER the interview: It makes ALL the difference that Kissinger said that he'd have talks with Iran but NOT with the President talking directly to Admadinejad with no preconditions.
As McCain said IN THE DEBATE, that sort of dialogue has been and IS going on NOW, between foreign secretaries, people at that level.
But having a President or V.P. meet with someone confers a certain status and level of expectation from the get-go,
You don't schedule that until certain preconditions are met. Sarah was technically correct in her answer -- but by not being able to clarify this distinction, as McCain could, she sounded even more naive than she accused Obama. And that voice -- Tina Fey has her nailed.

McCain won.
He may not be the prince with dreamy eyes that most of you see as a qualification for president. But McCain has forgotten more than Obama has ever learned. . .

Obama won and I think the numbers have panned out by now to verify that.
Bush has ruined this country and I think people see Obama as the one who will restore order in a more calm and precise fashion as opposed to more cowboy-type, gunning after the imaginary bad guy.
I also liked the 'I've got a bracelet too' line.
