Temblor!
Where were you? Did your cell phone work? Nope, mine didn't. Is LA ready for a bigger one?
From the LA Times:
The quake interrupted a meeting of the Los Angeles City Council, causing the 27-story City Hall to sway just as Councilman Dennis Zine was criticizing a plan to increase trash fees.
"Earthquake! Earthquake! We've got an earthquake," said Zine, as members of the audience began to cry out. "It's still happening."
From Ron Kaye:
Quake hit at 11:45 a.m. and reported to measure about 5.8 on the Richter Scale, which is quite strong but probably not deadly. It lasted about 30 seconds with strong rolls that intensified and was centered in the Chino Hills, 29 miles east of L.A. City Hall.
Council members made a few jokes and continued to talk nonsense. Tom LaBonge finally suggested they discuss evacuation plans to save their lives in case there's another temblor.
From Fox11:
After the shaking subsided, the Los Angeles City Council opted to take a 10- to 15-minute break during its regular Tuesday meeting, but City Hall was not evacuated. The building's elevators automatically shut down and remained inoperable at least an hour after the quake.
A lengthy public hearing by the council on trash fees was interrupted by the earthquake.
City Councilman Dennis Zine was speaking in opposition to the fees when the quake shook the council chamber.
"Well with those earth-quaking comments I'm going to vote no on this," Zine said. "My comments already shook the earth so I think I'm done."
With Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on vacation and City Council President Eric Garcetti attending naval training, Greuel is the acting mayor. She left the council meeting to receive a briefing at the Emergency Operations Center.
"This building is very safe, don't panic," Councilman Greig Smith said after the shaking stopped.

I am waiting for a long winded story about earthquakes from Don Quackers on Joe Mailhandler's blog.
I wonder if his abuelita will make it into Don Quackers earthquake story.

At my computer and felt it in the valley. Went to USGS, the Pasadena website and it says there were 4 total. Two of them were 2.8, one was a 3.8 and one was 5.8.
My son was talking to someone in Riverside who had to hang up because their bookshelves were falling.
It took 15 minutes for all cell coverage to come back here yet land lines were fine.
This is good for us. The more little ones - the less stress on the faults.

the LA Times website is terrible.
When the earthquake first hit, it was "server unavailable" - what good is "breaking news" on the internet, then?
Then, it only gave super basic info:
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-quake30-2008jul30,0,5345096.story
I got much better info, immediately, here:

Even Drudge Report was instant with a posting!

KNBC has been interviewing highschool students for like a half hour, but at the very beginning of the live coverage there was a spit-second shot of Rosendahl jumping up frantically in Council Chambers... mouth open & eyes bugging out. Looked like he shit his pants.

I happened to be watching LA City Council at the time- it was hilarious how one of the CMs (Grieg Smith?) was trying to assure everyone by saying "we spent $100 million to retrofit this building to make city hall earthquake-safe"!!

And, I felt NOTHING! I was parking my car in a parking garage on the west side.

Did the quake cause Rosendahl to drop his Dewey Decimal System Analog BlackBerry cards all over the floor?
Michael Higby said:
Wait a minute!
Is LeBong saying that they have YET to discuss evacuation plans? I thought that was all done regularly?

Zuma Dogg if you were using the loo when that happened, that's one of the safest places to be. Let us know if you're okay!

Kevin, you weren't alone. I was walking back to the office in Century City and felt nothing. The CAA Building made a loud, metallic grinding sound, which I attributed to window washers until I saw crowds of people standing around looking up.

My cell phone worked fine, 12:21. What company are you with, T-Mobile or Alltel? Mine's "Can-you-hear-me-now?".
Just because our mayor fell out of bed with his latest flame and caused the shaker, everyone gets a panic attack! Sheesh!
Anonymous said:
I'm next to the metro and Staples Center in an old solid cement building. I felt a jolt then heard a little cracking, creaking for about ten seconds. I felt no after shocks. No damage at all but dogs were scared to death.
My cell phone went out instantly and was out for half an hour. Internet was fine. The metro kept running during the earthquake and five minutes after it hit. I haven't heard a train since then. I heard a lot of sirens, car alarms going off, people screaming. Everything back to normal now.
Anonymous said:
This wasn't even a 'big one', and yet the yellow-bellied cowards in city hall were acting like a bunch of screaming cowards! I wonder if they called the police, fire dept., and paramedics!!!
What do we need them for??? They are good-for-NOTHING!!!

Up further review it was downgraded to a 5.4. No story here except for the panic among the Councilmembers. Cal Tech called it a "garden variety" quake. If a real one comes, we only hope that the Councilmembers run off and hide somewhere and get out of way of the professionals.
Althea R. Shaw said:
A few of us were getting ready to go out and get signatures for Jamiel's Law, when someone said, "Hey, the Councilmembers are voting on the trash fees today". So we turned in.
It was sad to hear and see the people speaking from the heart, especially the elderly lady that was sick with cancer. There were many people who spoke against the trash fees.
After the earthquake and right before the vote on the trash fees, Councilmember Wesson, Weiss and one other Councilmember were missing in action. But they did make it back in time to vote in support of the fees.
Councilman Zine was the only Councilmember to vote against the trash fees.
We need new people in office!

So where is the Mayor? One of the few times where there are great opportunities for photo ops and he's not here. And while I'm at it, why is it that the Mayor STILL hasn't made a comment about the Drew Street raid weeks ago...?
Zuma Dogg said:
I had already used up all my alloted time for the day so I wasn't there when it hit. But yeah, my cell phone didn't work. But not does Douchetonio miss out on being in front of the camera --
But cry-sissy Eric Garshady is out of town on his annual Naval training to prepare him for Congress. So Wendy grabs the glory. I'm surprised Laura Chick isn't there trying to push in.
AND HERE'S SOMETHING INTERESTING FROM THE MEETING TODAY I NOTICED, MAYOR SAM:
In the over two years I've been attending meetings, I have never seen the media (TV cameras and radio mics) surrounding a Councilmember in chambers the way they were surrounded by Jan Perry today regarding the "fast food ban."
Forget about the kids and schools, forget about crime, forget about taxes and fees and everything else...
THE BIGGEST STORY I HAVE EVER SEEN BASED ON MEDIA COVERAGE INSIDE COUNCIL CHAMBERS IS JAN PERRY'S FAST FOOD BAN.
JACK WEISS: One again was not anywhere to be seen during the council meeting, even though his name was on the "roll" and "yes" votes were flying through.
So I call Jack Weiss' office on my cell phone and say, "Is Jack there?"
And the receptionist pauses for a second and says, "Who should I say is calling?"
EXCUSE ME!?!?! WHY DON'T YOU JUST ADMIT HE WAS INDEED IN HIS OFFICE DURING THE COUNCIL MEETING!!!
IF HE WASN'T...WHY WOULD YOU BE ASKING WHO YOU SHOULD TELL HIM IS CALLING? Were you going to walk downstairs and tell him?
So ZD says, "Tell him it's Wendy and his attendance is requested at the council meeting." (Clearly I wasn't Wendy, but the receptionist got the gist) because Jackass came strolling into chambers in about the time it would take to walk down the hall, into the elevator and into chambers.
WHAT AN F-ING JACKASS!
If someone files a complaint, it should all be available to see on the City Hall security cameras, and check his office's phone calls from his own office during the meeting.

Here in Pomona, old brick building collapsed on 2nd St. three blocks west of Garey. Roof fell in then rear wall folded in. Building was empty and unoccupied. Helicopters overhead surveying the damage. The building was in the middle of a remodel.

OF COURSE THE MAYOR IS OUT OF LOS ANGELES WHEN ANOTHER BIG INCIDENT HAPPENS. BOY, HE'S NEVER HERE IS HE??
Anonymous said:
The KFI newswoman reported in the news before J&K went on that, "Dennis Zine was trying to calm the people at the council meeting." The reality is not quite that. Listen to the audio or the City website video- he was like a reporter, a very wide-eyed reporter, describing what was pretty obvious, "We're having an earthquake..... "
He and Greig Smith were both sounding like they were trying to convince themselves it was all going to be o.k.
Look for all this to cause a tax hike for making a preparedness plan for City Hall employees, which Laura Chick said is needed since no one had any plan.
"No Plan" is what goes for all they do.
They always talk while individuals are at the podium and this earthquake must have been the only thing that could make them stop.

I hope we do not have the big quake before the mayoral election. All the mayor has to do is be seen at some emergency center, roll up his sleeves, and serve a sandwich to a displaced homeowner and he will seem like as a hero. You know damn well AV will run, not walk, to such an opportunity, even if he is out of state at one of those campaign fundraisers with people who stand to make money off the increased taxes and diminished quality of life of Angelenos. You know, the quality of life that the third floor spinners dismiss as the "not in my back yard" crazies.
Anonymous said:
Boy did Antonio have his spinners putting out his stupid press release saying "no one should be concerned, everything is fine." How the hell would he know being out of town AGAIN. He's in London, saying he's with his son. He always has an alterior motive.
Anonymous said:
I wonder if Antonio is taking "furlough" days while on vacation? If he isn't, some of his "advisors" will read this and make an announcement in the next couple of days that he was taking "furlough" days.
I love the timing too. He's out of town again when the city council is picking our pockets with the trash TAX increase.

Zine's endless "earthquake, earthquake!" was just the precursor to his week as a Council Clown, maybe foreshadowing his debacle as a wannabe celebrity legislator with the paparazzi law. Which will always be associated with the Bratton Slapdown. LONG OVERDUE, after that fat fool's been dissing Bratton publicly over SO40 and leading on the unfortunate Shaw family. Who'll never get their law through Council, associating with those who diss the whole Council and the Mayor as well as Bratton.
(Plus, if Zine had a brain he'd inform them that it's the DA's office which is in charge of felons and felonies in Baca's County jails, and it was these 2 depts. which let out Espinoza, the husband with a restraining order who killed his wife as soon as they let him out -- and many more major fuckups. But Zine misplayed his hand, thinking he could suck up to Cooley and diss Bratton, Weiss, the Mayor, the Council -- throwing them a bone over some carwash or other illegal worker rights issue -- and "win.")
Earthquake! Earthquake! is the tumbling sound of Zine's career. As if someone who looks like Uncle Fester in S & M Harley leather and plays both sides against the other had a future anyway.
