More Mirth for Mirthala, This Time With Fabian! (But You Knew That)
This is not news despite what some westside bloggers and news sites may think. We had it here first. Looks like Mirthala has a thing for rising star Latino politicians.I think its time NBC considered getting rid of this "journalist" before they become a laughing stock.
NBC did however fire married reporter Kyung Lah for "gross misconduct" who had an affair with a producer at the station. The situation was so scandalous it apparently warranted the firing of two additional staffers.
As one of our readers asked, is it not gross misconduct if you are a reporter covering a political beat to sleep with at least two of the politicians you are charged with covering?
I would suspect the people who were fired may feel the same way.
And the consequences Mirthala has to face for her decision are numerous. No matter how great a reporter she is, no matter that she won "Women of the Year" in 1999, forget that she once worked on an NBC news network program - she will be a permanent butt to jokes, snickers and giggles and always been known as Antonio Villaraigosa's girlfriend.

Finally, reports are saying that rumors that the Mayor and Salinas are expecting an "anchor baby" are false. Our source says don't be so sure just yet. I'd like to think the Mayor and Mirthala aren't that reckless but its tough to do so given the turn of events.

And the Ethics Fireworks in Los Angeles

There are big-time fireworks in Los Angeles right now and they have nothing to do with the 4th of July celebration. This spectacle is about the mayor of L.A. and his very personal connections with a local television journalist.
The Los Angeles Daily News reports that "Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa acknowledged Monday that he is involved in a romantic relationship with television newswoman Mirthala Salinas."
The Los Angeles Times reports, "Last month Villaraigosa announced his separation from his wife of two decades, Corina Villaraigosa, and there had been speculation for weeks about whether another woman might be involved."
It’s the identity of this other woman that makes this case a topic for particular scrutiny in the arena of journalism ethics.
Mirthala Salinas is an anchor and reporter for the Los Angeles Telemundo station, Channel 52. She was part of the story about the mayor and she was involved in reporting it.
As the Times story recounts, "On June 8, Salinas opened Telemundo’s newscast with a report about Villaraigosa confirming that he and his wife were separating. 'The rumors were true,' Salinas said in Spanish. 'Mayor Villaraigosa confirmed today that he is separating from his wife, Corina, after more than 20 years of marriage.'"
It’s important to note that the Daily News story quotes a Telemundo spokesman as saying Salinas "moved off the political beat, which includes coverage of the mayor, about 11 months ago."
What’s not clear, of course, is when Salinas started her personal relationship with the mayor and whether it was going on while she was covering him as a journalist. If that was the case, there are serious concerns to be raised about her ethics and those of her station’s news managers if they were aware of the intersection of professional and personal connections.
And, even if Salinas left her political beat role and direct coverage of the mayor before she started the romantic relationship with him, what the heck was she doing reading stories as a newscast anchor that focused on his personal life?
The fireworks are exploding in L.A. on this one, and we’ll learn more as the smoke clears.
It’s a classic "warning bell" case for all journalists across the land.
The principle of independence is essential to the credibility of reporting on government officials. That independence is jeopardized when a journalist has a personal relationship with someone she or he covers. Competing loyalties, if not properly and ethically handled, can erode the integrity of the journalist and of the journalist’s news organization.

By the way, this kind of information getting out is going to make it even tougher for the Wandering Mayor ... normally we could expect the pressure to be on him now to actually marry this whore to "legitimize" his "romance" with her and make it seem like something so much deeper and more meaningful than just another of many lays ... but in the face of the news that all of them are sleeping around like they are in a constant heat, it is going to be real tough to put any face of legitimacy on any of it!

The rumor circulating at Telemundo is that Salinas has video of herself and Antonio -- and that the business they're shown doing is hardly professional.

Clinton was and IS "this horrible person". You think the only problem with Clinton was "getting laid"? Hardly - it was simply a glaring outward manifestation of the overall rot within. And I am certainly not partisan if you are talking about Democrats and Republicans, since I am neither. And just WHAT does that last sentence mean? It is indecipherable.

This is how it works. If you are a news station and you want good stories, send in the reporter most likely to get a good interview. With womanizers you send in pretty young things who are willing to do what it takes to get the interview. Another thing, say you are a lobbying group. You want to get politicians to do what you want. Who do you send in? The lobbyist most likely to persuade the politician to do what you want. Again, you would send in a pretty young thing to a known womanizer.
How do I know this? My group sent me in to persuade Antonio on our issue. They sent me in because they said he was a womanizer who would listen to a pretty young thing with boobs. I have boobs. I talked to Antonio, he talked to my boobs, he was persuaded to see my point of view on our issue.
Yes, Antonio should not have cheated on his wife and left her for this journalist who's just a politico fucker. But, these women are freely offering themselves to him, to get what they want. It takes a strong man to say "no" and we all know Antonio is weak.
p.s. I did not sleep with Antonio or do anything else with him. I just wore a snug black business pant suit, batted my eyes a little and paid him some compliments on his suit.

The Times traced their relationship back at least 18 months.
In November 2005 — four months after he was sworn into office — Villaraigosa was seen one evening by a resident of the Sherman Oaks condominium complex where Salinas lived at the time.
Jean Rouda recalled pulling into the garage about 9 p.m. and seeing Villaraigosa standing alone and buzzing to get into the building. Rouda said she recognized the mayor and was surprised that he had no security guards and that there was no limousine parked nearby. She said she and her niece entered the lobby, where they encountered Villaraigosa, who was wearing a dress shirt and slacks, and was carrying bags of takeout food and a bottle of wine.
The two women and Villaraigosa got into the elevator. He extended his hand to Rouda and introduced himself as Antonio.
"I look at him and go, 'I know who you are. I know who you're going to see. Tell her I say hi,' " she recalled.
Rouda said she was certain that Villaraigosa was visiting Salinas because everyone else in the 15-unit complex was "older and Jewish" except for her. "I knew he was not going to visit an elderly Jewish woman with wine and food," she said.
All along, Villaraigosa and his aides remained silent about the relationship.
Then in late January, rumors about the Villaraigosas' shaky marriage escalated after a local Internet blog reported that the mayor and his wife had separated.

Laura Castañeda, an associate professor of professional practice for the USC Annenberg School of Journalism, criticized Telemundo for allowing Salinas to report on the mayor in any respect, saying it was "completely inappropriate" for the station to let Salinas announce the mayor's breakup with his wife.
"I think Telemundo is going to have to really take a hard look at this," said Castañeda, who has conducted research about Spanish-language media. " It doesn't reflect well. Telemundo has no excuse."
Antonio is such a dog that he didn't even care that his buddy Fabian was hitting it before he got there.

I hate to agree with 11:24 -- because I do think one's personal life should not be equated w/ the official, just cuz they're politicians they're still human -- but I'm afraid this lady is not going to sit well with voters if he makes her "the one." She had had such a string of politician lovers, married and otherwise, it seems like she set out to ensnare the big cahuna for her greedy ambition, hard to believe it was spontanious love.
