Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who is in the midst of divorce proceedings with his wife, acknowledged he is in a relationship with a Spanish-language television reporter, according to a statement published Tuesday.Villaraigosa issued a statement, published Tuesday by the Los Angeles Daily News, acknowledging his involvement with Telemundo newswoman Mirthala Salinas, after the paper told the mayor it was set to publish a story about their relationship.
"It is true that I have a relationship with Ms. Mirthala Salinas. As I've said I take full responsibility for my actions, and I once again ask that people respect my family's privacy. For my part, I intend to stay focused on my job, and to work as hard as I can every day to be the best mayor I can be," Villaraigosa said.

It's funny when you think about the individuals who would come on the blog to attack those who would bring out Mirthala Salinas' name when the "Sancha Watch 2007". I think more so than anything, it plays into Antonio Villaraigosa's self perceived ability to come out of any situation without any deep wounds. Almost any negative situations that come out against him, he's able to work his way through them in a manner that allows him to come out with minor wounds, but nothing that will last longer than a week. So when something as big as a divorce and an affair with a high-profile woman like Mirthala Salinas is on his doorstep, I'm sure that the first thought in his head is "ok, I know that I can handle this".
Why else would you call a press conference?! I'd say that it was to serve his ego even further, to allow him the opportunity to face the gauntlet of reporters and then come out of the press conference saying to himself "see, I knew I could do it".
And yes, if his relationship was going that bad, why didn't he just step up to taking care of business and doing everything in an honorable way - separate, divorce, and then go partner up with whoever catches his interests.
This should serve as a wake up call to himself, Robin Kramer, Jimmy Blackman, and the rest of his leadership team within City Hall that he's not Superman. He has many more weaknesses than Superman, but more so than anything, his kryptonite has more often than not has been himself.

We now know Michael Bloomberg is seriously considering a run for the presidency, the Downtown News reports. Is the New York City mayor planning to ask our mayor to join him on the ticket? Has he already asked?
The likelihood of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa as a vice presidential candidate in 2008 has seemed so remote as to be silly, except to a handful of fervent supporters dismissed as having lost touch with reality. I think we should all make a pledge to stop calling the Mayor by the name of Antonio Villaraigosa and refer to him as Antonio Villar. The whole reason why he had the Raigosa in his name was to "honor" the bond between him and Corina. LOS ANGELES (AP) - Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who is in the midst of divorce proceedings with his wife, acknowledged Tuesday that he is in a relationship with a Spanish-language television reporter.
The mayor insisted at a news conference that his relationship with Telemundo newswoman Mirthala Salinas would not interfere with his job and he pleaded for privacy for his family.
"I have had a relationship with Ms. Salinas over time. It has evolved, and today I have acknowledged that relationship," said Villaraigosa, who announced his separation from his wife, Corina, last month after 20 years of marriage.
Corina Villaraigosa filed for divorce June 12, a day after the mayor told reporters in a City Hall news conference that he took the blame for his crumbling marriage.
"I don't believe that the details of my personal life are relevant to my job as mayor," he said, speaking to reporters after attending a downtown swearing-in ceremony for school board members Tuesday.
Villaraigosa had previously declined to comment, but issued the statement to the Los Angeles Daily News after the paper told him it was set to publish a story about his relationship with the Telemundo newswoman.
Salinas moved off the political beat, which includes coverage of the mayor, about 11 months ago, Telemundo spokesman Alfredo Richard said. He said the station wouldn't comment on employees' personal lives.
Messages left after hours by The Associated Press with Telemundo, whose parent company is NBC Universal, was not immediately returned.
Corina Villaraigosa declined comment Tuesday through the mayor's office.
She seeks spousal support and primary physical custody of the couple's 14-year-old daughter, Natalia, with visitation terms to be worked out with the mayor, according to the filing.
They also have an 18-year-old son, Antonio Jr., and the mayor has two adult daughters from previous relationships.
