L.A. official steered work to relatives Nearly $800,000 in contracts, often with inflated prices, went to family and firms with political ties

Way to go Mayor Sam bloggers. I've had to hear y'all say, "Estrada Court" more than Archie had to hear Edith say, "cling peaches". Keep sending the smoke signals! It's a "people's champ" victory every time we read one of these stories in the paper!

From LA Times:

* These firms — all with ties to current or former Los Angeles City Council members from the Eastside — won their contracts in bidding processes fraught with irregularities. In one case, a losing bid was submitted by a nonexistent company. Other such bids came from actual companies which, when contacted by The Times, said they were surprised to learn that bids had been submitted in their names.

* The bid-rigging comes at a time when the housing authority is grappling with the consequences of a series of mismanagement and corruption scandals...

* The Estrada Courts group, a nonprofit run out of an Eastside housing project, received four contracts collectively worth about $95,000. It already had government contracts to provide security guards and day-care programs at some projects.

And speaking of Garcetti (see Mayor Sam thread above): ZD STRATEGIC REVIEW OF GARCETTI'S COMMENTS REGARDING NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE USING PUBLIC COMMENT TO TALK ABOUT GOOD THINGS. (Sorry Eric, they're too busy telling you how you are destroying their lives with your "yes" votes.) ZD Strategic Review For Eric Garcetti to help him be a more effective communicator in his leadership position as gentrifying coffer targeter.

Housing authority files show bid for about $100,000 in construction design work at three housing projects was submitted in the name of civil engineer George Sihvonen. But Sihvonen said he never made the bid.

Other bidders for this contract listed in city housing authority records included:
Republic Services Group, whose owner said he did not submit the bid.
Estelle Campbell, who also said she did not submit the bid.
KV and Co., whose bid was submitted in the name of a nonexistent executive.
Vargas Designs, a company that apparently does not exist.
West Coast United, whose owner said he submitted a bid through his political consultant, Gustavo Valdivia, an assertion Valdivia denied.
Valdivia's firm, Grande Vista Associates, which won the bid.
Estrada Courts Resident Management Corp., from whom Valdivia sublets office space.

Is there really anybody in charge or do these guys just worry about cashing their checks on payday.

Why is it that "supervisors" with subordinates that are so blatantly stealing money don't catch on? Then they seem to avoid the fallout from the "investigations" afterwards by claiming they did all that procedures required. How about actually doing some real spot checks, at minimum?

If they would try treating the job of handling and paying out money as carefully as they would do with their own money, then this might not happen.

I would say that they aren't doing their job- too many managers in government operate that way. They don't have to really worry about accountability - it's too foreign a concept. And there's no one around to make them change that.

Funny how the LA Times acts like whether Burke spends more time at one of her houses versus the other is more heinous than this gross, illegal misuse of taxpayer money. LAT has riled up the lynch mob against Yvonne despite the fact that she is almost through being a supe anyway. Instead of LAT devoting blog space to giving idiots the chance to call her a b!tch because she doesn't sleep in South Central enough, let people express their frustration with this type of corruption on their website. This corruption is 1000x more detrimental to the interests of the poor than Burke in Brentwood. But of course all the lemmings will join the chorus of boos because LAT knows the guaranteed way to distract the masses.

Gee, how original of you to post this days after it was on the front-page of the L A Times, picked up by Daily News and every real paper, and talked to death... BUT your illustrious and with-it readers, like 1:27 a.m. on the newer post, thank you for this "fresh" info, or else they would have no idea what is REALLY going on in town. This blog is like flypaper for all the village idiots.

Today's Daily News reports: The Community College administration squandered the $2.2 BILLION in bond money the voters approved for major construction projects, like gyms, libraries and media facilities...

Didn't built a single one of them, because they spent the money on lots and lots and lots of PLANS AND DESIGNS AND STUDIES about what to build; they DID to a little painting and landscaping and screwed in a few lightbulbs. (And I wouldn't be surprised if some contractors profited anyway, maybe more handsomely than these idiotic and transparent CD14 crooks.)

In the meantime, building costs have doubled, so they're going to come back at us for -- NEW MULTIBILLION BONDS for what they squandered in the first place.

This just goes to show that while you people are worrying about who the Mayor is shtupping, the really big, really wasteful and incompetently mismanaged projects go under the radar.

Wait didn't the Daily News report that Huizar just had a bbq for the College Board of Trustees this past weekend. Why in the hell would he do that paid for by our tax money?

More millions squandered by moron city council members.
The Los Angeles City Council's Budget and Finance Committee agreed Monday to appropriate $2 million for mulch and fences to help prevent landslides on Griffith Park's charred hillsides.

Prev. poster, 7:07 or 11 or whatever, the lard-ass: What's your point, fool? That it's fine to totally waste billions specifically approved by the voters for physical plants on absolutely nothing, and then plan to go back for billions more for same?

Since you can't deal with that, you've got to go back to your one retarded theme, trying to tie the Mayor and his associates, including Monica Garcia who'll be making 45K, to squandering billions more? They have nothing to do with how LAUSD funds were used or squandered so far. All you've done is proven your stupidity and obsession with the Mayor... I'm not going to be drawn into more stupid dialogues with you or zuma or any of your blood-thirsty lunatics, have fun.
