Thursday Melee

Here are your topics du jour:

City Hall is poised to lavish hundreds of millions of dollars of corporate welfare on rich downtown developers to "help" them build a hotel. Hey, why do you think the Clowncil tried to drive up costs at those OTHER hotels? Read about it at the L.A. Times.

While you're at it, you can see how the supposed "compromise" with the LAX hotels is actually just a fig leaf. There is no agreement, no binding commitment by the hotels to do anything. Indeed, the hotel owners couldn't even be bothered to talk to Villaraigosa on the phone. Rather, the Clowncil and the Mayor simply surrendered, repealed the idiotic ordinance, and then pretended they had achieved some great compromise.

Labor leaders likewise participated in the charade, calling it a great "victory." Sure it was, if by "victory" you mean the workers will not be getting a raise.

However, in this town, where appearance, not content, counts, the doublspeak, fig-leaf approachworked! Channel 4 news last nigh dutifully reported the Mayor's self-serving, self-congratulatory press conference, without bothering to go into the substance at all. Idiocracy is here and now, not just in the movies. Click here and decide for yourself: deal or no deal?

Finally, today, on McIntyre in the Morning, yours truly presented his proposal to solve L.A.'s affordable plastic surgery crisis. You can read about it at MooreIsBetter.com.

Walter at first reading your article I was laughing. Then reality hit that we are in LA where we have the most vain, arrogant Mayor and clowncil members who think trans fats are more important then public safety. It wouldn't surprise me if the clowncil moved on this on in a motion. Hell they banned silly string.

Thanks. You've really summed up public policy in L.A.: amusing and frightening at the same time.

Walter Moore says the hotel workers won't get a raise 'til next year, if ever.

Labor says the hotel workers get the full raise by July 1st of '07.

All we gotta do is wait 5 months and we'll see, definitively, who is full of it.

Clock's a'tickin'.

and yet what will they (hotels) take away meantime? phone calls, parking, meals, snacks, coffee, laundry service? I never heard anyone say definitively what perks if any these workers have, or had......
what really disgusts me is that when given the opportunity to compromise, a one week continuation a while back by Dennis Zine, they did zack, zilch and nothing to compromise, both sides. Its an absolute loss for both sides having Clowncil come in on their business. ask both sides of venice beach boardwalk how successful council interference is? just gonna cost city taxpayers another couple million.
Bitter Bernie says "we get sued all the time", after saying "the decorum doesn't go as far as we wanted, but as far legally as we are allowed".
no wonder they always gettin sued.

with a quick consult from ZD and the mayor sam people, I'll give them the 'street' version of what the future will bring if they vote some lame brain scheme or another.

sorry Jerry Miller, current CLA. I saw him outside City Hall puffing on a cigarette, and it begged the thought " Jerry, have you analyzed the warning from the Surgeon General on the side of the pack?"

Wrong. I said no such thing.

Patrick, I'm really tired of people incorrectly attributing statements to me. Please get your facts straight next time.

The only thing worse is when someone "spoofs" me, i.e., makes an idiotic statement and then signs my name to it. I make quite enough idiotic statements without getting help from anyone else, thank you very much!

Walter is wasn't YOU who said that the increase won't take affect til next year it was all over the media yesterday.

Matt, how can you quote Bitter Bernie about lawsuits when the city has paid out millions because of him on Rampart lawsuits? Then Bitter Bernie turns around and voluntarily files a declaration on a lawsuit against the CITY. No one asked his vindicitve ass but because he is in desperate need of mental therapy to get over the fact no one wanted him as chief of LAPD he acts out of insecurity.
